Layers upon layers upon layers would describe how this painting came together. The darkest darks are  Golden's dioxazine purple.  I haven't done this in a while, but absolutely love mixing this purple with yellow to get those rich browns. Reminds me of coffee! Variations of the brown are created by adjusting the amount of yellow and white added for lightness.  Usually, I will work with a color palette like this more along the time Fall is approaching…not the beginning of Spring.  Maybe, just maybe someone has been waiting for this one…could that be you?

Winter seems to bring on a desire to work more with red.  In this painting I am working with those reds, a touch of turquoise, azo yellow and burnt umber.  My neutrals are a mixture of those colors in the painting plus white.  I began this one with the idea of of a vertical line composition using raw umber for the lines and then filling color in with a brush.  As the paint began to build up and thicken I switched off to a palette knife. This enables me to do a lot of my mixing of color on the canvas itself.  A roller was used for a softening effect. Lastly, I played around with the detailing. Do you like?

Michael Buble...OMG!  My son, Doren bought us tickets on mother's day for his concert.  We went to this event here in Springfield, Mo. on Tuesday night.  Incredible....So many new ideas came from this.  There's got to be a "Crazy Love" heart to come from this!! 

Experimenting with this small painting before a larger one in which I've been thinking about limiting myself to just black and white.   Working with only black and white is harder than it appears, at least for me.  As you can see with this little one, color made it's way in. I painted this one after a larger one that I just completed "Traverse" which will be posted next week....or can be seen here. ....in a similar  palette.   I feel as if I've been working a lot with the same color palette and maybe the limitation would be a cleansing, so to speak and move me a long to working with other color schemes. We'll see...

I have always loved a good fairy tale....so perhaps that is why I've been so enchanted by watching the Royal  Wedding between Prince William and Kate Middleton.  We also have two very important weddings coming up!!....May 15th our daughter Elsie will be marrying Jeremy Larson.  Then a little breather and we will have our son Doren marrying Sarah Lockhart October 1st.  Exciting!!

Snowed again last night!  Looking out the window at the bare white covered trees that seem to be asleep makes me think about times of healing and restoration.  As they are resting now, in another month or so.... they will begin to bud and bloom again.... bright and beautiful!  There is also a beauty to be found during this time of the season knowing that this is the way nature works.  Knowing that beneath the snow on the leafless trees there are buds ready to emerge when the time is right.  Realize that when things are not going like we think they should... still they are going..... For everything there is a season...

A very girlie painting!!  Christmas colors and feelings was the intention for this painting, but instead the influence of having baby Penelope Bloom presently living with us is what emerged.  An abstract painting with a feminine flair that everyone will appreciate.

I have been back and forth to the easel with more ideas for this painting and yet each time my hand just stops.  Presently, it is hanging in our living room (the rotating wall) where I have pondered it's completion.   ..... and I have decided that it is finished.  'The Crossing' is much like my other recent paintings 'Concentre' and 'Equipoise' only it has a softer, lighter feel.  Still working in the warmer earth tones yet with a punch of vivid color. The photograph does not show it, but this painting is loaded with actual texture as well. .....fiesta!! Having grown up in a hispanic culture where every occasion or event was a reason to have a fiesta, this painting celebrates color with RED.

We have a collection of bottles that we have been buying and saving, pretty much because we just liked the shapes and colors. I had set these bottles up on a studio table with the intention of painting a still life. Well....I later decided to scratch that idea and just began rolling the paint out on this canvas. I was simply working on the design of the painting when I began to see a few bottles emerging and went with it. It took some time to find them all. Stepping away or leaving and coming back tends to give a fresh perspective.

"ooh that is really RED.." ya that is what Don said when he walked in on me as I was in the midst of having such a great time with all this. It always just kinda sort of annoys me when he does this- it's like when someone says " that is really in..te...res..ting" when they don't quite know how to tell you they don't like it. Anyway, I ignored the remark and continued on...

Good thing, because just as I got it finished the opportunity for it to be on display presented itself. Tomorrow it will be at the "Go Red Luncheon" for the American Heart Associations annual fund raiser at the Oasis Convention Center in Springfield with nearly 600 participants.

Funny how things work out...the Creator at work again!!

..........leaves home!!! Thought I would post the feeling of the emptiness when another baby leaves. This painting was a customized special painting with Kendra in mind. You can read more about it by clicking here. This was a painting that was completed several weeks ago and I had it hanging in our living room where I was enjoying it, with my morning coffee. So a bit of sadness, but the emptiness is replaced with joy in knowing that it was created to speak to, be enjoyed and be a part of Kendra's home. Thank you, Kendra!!!

Well, I am sitting here this morning enjoying a cup of coffee and this newest painting as it is hanging on our wall. This one was specifically painted with Kendra in mind. Kendra had been the original inspiration for "Nine", see in web gallery, in which she had suggested a painting with red, yellow and green and shades of. At the time I took it as a challenge and "Nine" was created. The number Nine emerged and actually a ninety-one which had significance to me at the time. I had no idea though that she was going to be interested in the purchase of the painting, and before she had the opportunity it was sold.

Many other paintings have been painted since and always in my mind I thought perhaps this one will be the one for Kendra- but never did I have the the surety of it as I did with this one. Eight is a number that I recently found out has major significance to Kendra. This painting was customized with the original red, yellow, green and shades of- and her personalized number.

She absolutely loves it!! So both "Nine" and "Eight" have found their rightful homes..... just a matter of time and waiting.

another baby leaves home.....

Ya, isn't that crazy?!! ....but it did feel like another one of the children was departing from the nest. This painting is titled "The Show" and it has been written about on my blog (in fact just a few days ago) and can also be seen on my Web Gallery. Erica has been absolutely in love with the colors in this work and is taking it home to hang above their couch.

Lately, I've been humbled by the interest and joy I see owning a work of mine brings other. I'm sorry to say that I enjoy the whole process of creating so much and of course the end result of that is to sell the work, that I had never thought a lot about how it makes the buyers feel.

Erica and Joe, it makes me so happy in knowing that this painting brings you joy and means so much to you. Thank you so much!!! "The Show" will be making it's new home in Omaha, Nebraska.

Second Act

I painted this one to replace another painting, THE SHOW, that someone was absolutely in love, in love with but then couldn't purchase it because it had sold.... or so we thought..... that's the long story short. BUT, because of this the idea for a theatrical series gave birth. This is the SECOND ACT, which will be followed by FINALE and lastly CURTAIN CALL.

I found it very difficult and procrastinated for days in starting this one. I was hung up on re-creating one like the first one, "The Show". Once I began and put that first mark down, it began to unfold and I simply allowed myself to go with the creative flow. This one has it's own uniqueness that I absolutely love. To see "The Show" and "Second Act" go to My Web Gallery (large abstracts) and they can be viewed side by side. Click on the photo for larger version and the magnifying glass to view detailed color. The reds in the photo of Second Act tend to all blend in the photo but under the magnifier it's possible to see all the golds, yellow, coppers and oranges that make this area so rich. The photographs are close but again just really do not give the paintings justice. The colors in both of these are beautiful!!

No two will ever be the same. I can't believe now that I thought I would be able to recreate the first one. My husband pointed out that it is just like having kids. That is so true. I even did that with them. After Elsie the oldest, who was born with the darkest hair and eyes I assumed that the second one would be just the same. Really I did. (you know dark hair and eyes are dominant) Well, then Emma came along and she looked a lot like her sister but had lighter hair and blue eyes. Then Doren, the youngest had blonde hair.

So now, because of this long story short there is a theatrical series, two paintings and a person who will be needing to make a decision.... or maybe not and take them both home!!!

Red has sold! Thank you, Thank you- Red was inspired from a bouquet of flowers that Elsie had given me for the opening of my show back in June. You can see a picture of the original bouquet in this photo of us I posted. This painting has lots of layers of color, thick acrylic paint and the background was changed when I decided on the RED.

Very excited today, as Elsie is getting her new puppy today!! Gigi can't wait to play with her. Another pug to add to our pug family. This one is a blond like Love Love (Emma's) I wonder what her name will be? yes, we are sooooooo pug crazy!
