Inspiration can come from so many different sources.  The important thing is getting an idea planted in your head and being so excited about it that you can't wait to put to a canvas.  That is the spark that gets it rolling.  Many changes from the original idea can occur, but that's ok….it's all a part of the process.

A commission is different in that the idea is going to come from someone else, the client.  Now and then there are clients who will totally turn you loose. "Love your work. I want you to paint freely. Here's the size I would like, paint however you want".  LOVE painting that way!!

However, I also enjoy painting with direction being given to me.  In this manner, the inspiration is coming from the information that the client is giving.  I may hear about certain paintings that are favored or not, preferred color schemes, colors to not use, perhaps it's a certain feeling the painting is to have from photographs the client sends me, etc., What is unique about a commission is that it becomes a merging together of ideas between a client and the artist.  A unique individualized work of art. Somewhere between all this info. inspiration will strike.

The story behind this painting is another special relationship that was formed between myself as an artist and the client.  Inspiration came to me immediately as I read the initial contact.  This person was re-decorating their home in a contemporary/neutral color/tranquil environment.  The painting would be for their bedroom which had a very long wall where they were looking for and considering a large painting. They liked my colorful, happy, fun style.  Mom and Dad's bedroom was a very special place in which each morning the kids would run and jump in their bed. A time of day in which they spent  together laughing and playing together.  The desire was to create a painting that visually represented this "happy" and "good morning" type of day.  This shared information totally stole my heart away and the initial vision/inspiration for this painting was birthed.

We continued to communicate in order to pin down their expectations. The initial vision was to have happy and fun colors  to represent their morning family time.  Changes to the original vision where made as it was asked if it could also include more of a landscape or maybe even a cityscape.  Abstract, of course. Also, could it be more of a horizontal composition.  The challenge as an artist is to work the ideas that the client has into your own.  That is what you see here.  Can you see the tree(s), landscape, cityscape, happy and fun colors all mixed into a horizontal composition? It is a challenge, but I love the uniqueness that occurs with the collaboration of ideas and the individualism that a custom made work of art creates. 

The bottom image is the final version in which a few adjustments were made.  It's not quite as bright due to the difference in times of day photos were taken. Somewhere in-between the two images is the actual color in real.  There was a little too much pink to suit the man in the family. No big deal. Totally, understand.  Simply, brushed a little red over it, toning it down without changing the balance of color.

So happy that this painting is going to be very loved!

studio dilemma

I am still struggling with working in my studio.  Only now it is because we've had to so some unexpected work on the basement ceiling, (not my studio) which curtailed removing the previous ceiling texture and replacing sheetrock.  It is a mess.  Therefore, I only tip toe through when I really, really need to get something. Not feeling like working down there with all that mess.  Plus, still working on the lighting in my studio.  This painting was completed last week before all this begun.  

Yesterday, I just needed to paint. So, I brought my watercolors, gouache, brushes and paper upstairs.
I've now set up a temporary studio in the kitchen!  Here I have decided I will use up the watercolors and gouache paint.  Because I mostly paint with acrylics the watercolors have not been used as much over the last few years.  Good watercolor paint is expensive, but a little bit goes a long ways and so they can last a long time. Only, if not used up over many years they will turn gummy like in texture which is what has happened. Gouache is another watercolor medium.  It is more opaque than watercolors.  I call it the oils of watercolors.  Love the feel of being able to mix and blend with them, especially with white.  To resolve the problem I'm having with the watercolors having turned gummy like, I'm mixing  white gouache into them.  Mixed media.

Back to the studio dilemma.  I feel like a broken record going over and over the struggle I've been having getting back into feeling at home in my new studio space.  It takes time to get things to where they are working for you.  I was encouraged this morning by reading another artist's struggle with this dilemma.  I've always admired her work and is pretty much a daily read of mine: Texas Artist Laurie Pace  Not feeling so alone now, in my struggle.

If you care to take a look at the 2010 version of Innermost you will find there us been a change!  An update, a revision, a redo or whatever you want to call revisiting an older painting.  As the layers of acrylic gesso and paint were built up with a palette knife my thoughts where captivated by the beauty of subtleties.  The mixing of whites into the existing colors creating such soft tones of color and texture.  Less color for a change.

We hung work last week at Systematic Savings Bank downtown Springfield, Missouri for the Friday Night Artwalk.  A very talented face painting artist painted a requested PINK bunny on Penny's face.  We spent a wonderful evening greeting and talking art with the local crowd.

Just added this one to my web gallery store and have gone through and added all the PayPal buttons back, so that buyers who are ready and prefer making a direct purchase are able to quickly do so.  Whether or not to list your prices on line has always been a dilemma among artist for various reasons.  One being that prices can vary from an artist's asking price depending on the sites that you list on and commission fees that can range anywhere from 5% percent to 50%.  There is also more flexibility when working with multiple purchases, repeat buyers, shipping, etc.,  In the end, decided to go back with listing the prices for all my paintings. I do always, love hearing from those who would rather email me for more information before making a decision on a purchase.  This type of interaction can only happen when your working independently as your own promoter.  I have tended to stay away from any sites that require exclusiveness, as it ties up those paintings and they then can only be sold by that particular gallery. However, I recently decided to work with another gallery offering three paintings to be exclusively sold by Davis&Co,  in Houston, Texas.  Selling your own work is an art in itself with similarities much  like the creative process. You's got to be willing to try new ways, change it up and most of all believe.

I was having lunch with a couple of friends of mine last week when the title for this painting came to me.  I work intuitively and began this one with purple. Why purple? Well, it was the first color that came to my mind as I began. That led to the next color(s)/idea(s) and from their the painting began to emerge.  I'll have to admit working with the purples and green felt a bit unusual for me and really wasn't all that sure about it.  But, I do feel it is important to allow and follow each paintings flow and uniqueness. So, what does lunch have to do with this?

My friend Emily had taken off on a trail and is talking about a trip to Peru.  She is describing how BEAUTIFUL the Andes Mountains that run through Peru are with all the purples and greens.  I'm visualizing this scene that she is describing when instantly this painting that I had been working comes to my mind.  I interrupt (artist friends are use to these interruptions in conversations with each other as ideas are being tossed around) to show her a picture from that mornings painting on instagram. Which then leads us into a conversation about instagram…see how artist's converse with each other! It's like talking in circles, but amazingly much is accomplished.

Longstory short, later I googled for information and images of the Peruvian Andes Mountains and saw those colors that she was talking about. I then began seeing this painting in a different light and imagining. It is now hanging on one side of our living room wall, against a cafe colored wall.  Very striking and enjoying it much, well until one day.  The title comes from Alpamayo one of the highest peaks in the chain close to the Alpamuyu river. Can't be afraid of pink either for this one!

SO rarely, but oh so sweet.  This one sold fresh off the easel and while the paint was literally still wet! I had just taken it off the easel to be photographed outside along with another painting.  Posted it on instragram, where it was seen by the buyer of "Highlight" , who then contacted me as a possible interest to her sister.  So, two of my paintings going to another pair of sisters! "Sisterlyties" was the last one. How is that for Sister Style? …loved this particular blog post written by my daughter's Elsie and Emma of A Beautiful Mess.  They also read my blog. And YES girls..I would prefer the blended version for the Coconut Toasted Margarita!  You'ld have to watch towards the end of this You Tube video to catch the question. Ok, so that was off the track.

No, I never drink while painting. I know it may look that way. Totally me. I can be deeply inspired by music. With this painting, I was listening to an instrumental artist named Yanni--If I Could Tell You-- that I found while reading the January issue of Visual Language Magazine.  Painting for me is much like an adventure, not really knowing where it will lead with each discovery leading to the next.  Purely intuitive.  This painting was so that way as I followed the flow enjoying the process of creating.  As I paint, my thoughts can be far removed from the actual painting process. Kinda like putting it on autopilot. In this case there was a lot of thankfulness and praise to God.

ABSTRACT PAINTING "FUSION"

Layers upon layers upon layers would describe how this painting came together. The darkest darks are  Golden's dioxazine purple.  I haven't done this in a while, but absolutely love mixing this purple with yellow to get those rich browns. Reminds me of coffee! Variations of the brown are created by adjusting the amount of yellow and white added for lightness.  Usually, I will work with a color palette like this more along the time Fall is approaching…not the beginning of Spring.  Maybe, just maybe someone has been waiting for this one…could that be you?

Loving it.  My abstracts are known for their color, movement and texture.  But shapes..not so much. This will change that! Don't you think?!   Kinda reminded me of a painting from 2011 titled "Mosaic".
Perhaps this one might be a reminder of child's play. No plans or expectations getting in the way, just pure adventure on the canvas.  Experimenting freely.

oops…haven't posted in a bit.  Could it be Spring is on the way?!  With these early warm days I've been enjoying and working outside as much as possible.  Inside the house, there is nothing like more light to jump start the spring cleaning. Also, a good form of procrastinating studio time. Hey, at least the house is getting clean!  Today, it is raining and the 42 degree start is slowly dropping to the present 32 with talk of snow.  Fixing chicken and dumplings for lunch, tomato and grilled cheese sandwiches for supper, there's a pecan pie made and maybe hot chocolate some time today. Comfort foods to take the chill away.  Tomorrow it will be 17 degrees, then Tuesday will be back to 60 degrees. yep, it's the Ozarks!

I've heard it said that, "the first brushstroke can be the hardest" and so it was with this one.  It was begun with the background colors and left for many days as I went on with other stuff to do. Along the  way, the back of my mind was saying, "you've got work to do in the studio, need to get back" and so reluctantly I stepped back in one morning.  Sometimes the best time to paint, can be when you just don't feel like it, don't care or are bored as this can help make that shift to the right creative brain side much quicker.  I found myself not worrying about creating a wonderful work, one that is liked by others, will sell, etc., etc.,  but just….enjoying it!

I painted this one as a horizontal but when I turned it as I so often do with my paintings to find it's strongest side, I found that I liked it as a vertical too.  I could not, could not decide so decided to put it on Instagram/Facebook for a vote.  The comments were all interesting and it pretty much came out about half/half in favor of horizontal or vertical.  Here is the horizontal for you to decide:

So what do you think? As I favored the vertical,  I added the white drips making it more towards a vertical, but still works strongly as a horizontal.  Someone suggested that it would depend on the space that you were going to hang it.  Totally agree.  I've decided that this one is just as strong as a horizontal as it is a vertical and could be hung either way.  That is true for so many abstracts, but still I always like to pick it's strongest side for listing.  Not so with this one, as I will be promoting it both ways. Everyone wins.

The black and white painting "Limitless" that my daughter Emma asked that I do for her and Trey's home office has gotten the wheels turning on a black and white series.  This is the second one.  I have found these to be harder to paint than they appear.  It might  be since color comes so naturally for me that it feels as if I've got my hands tied when working with just black and white.  I would like to try one with color, then layer in the black and white with some color coming through.  The challenge is good. 

Here we are photographing outside using natural lighting.  With all the white in this painting this spot in the shade turned out to work the best.  Propped on top of a found object in order to keep the bottom edge from being in the sun.  Fancy photographing equipment. I then had to up the exposure in editing to get it to as close as possible to real thing, which is lighter than this.
