Speaking for myself here. Some paintings are a zippy zip, started and finished so quickly. Others are matter of layering and time and then there are few that may take a few years before the painting is revisited and finally reaches completion. These two I'm posting were very quickly created. Spontaneous works of art.

This second was actually intended to be an underpainting. I posted it on instagram and it was so loved the way that it is, that it made  me think about perhaps leaving it. Maybe it's the energy or boldness.

"So, when is a painting completed?" seems like an age old question. Again, speaking for myself...I always feel it's important to go with the flow of the painting rather than devising some sort of formula. It's not about how much time it took, but more about whether it is working or not. Sometimes, well often for me...the hardest part can be that of letting go. Especially when it happens so quickly.

On the other end of the spectrum there is the problem of maybe overdoing a painting. Again, it's the knowing when to stop. BUT, if you should take that risk and pass that point there will always be another spot of completion. Just keep going till you reach the next ahha moment.

Ever daydream?!

"What was the artist thinking while creating this work?" is a common question asked by collectors. Here are my thoughts:

It's good to dream and might as well dream big.  I am so thankful to be able to bring dreams to reality through the process of creating.  When I posted this painting on instagram the question was asked of me as to what the dream was about?  The short answer, "A world in which every one truly loves each other"  The longer version, is it was painted on election day here in the US (Nov. 8th), I was thinking about the division/sadness this election has caused in our nation, among family, friends, communities, etc., Like no other I have ever seen. Crazy. The dream was that we could all get along, loving each other and living in peace. What's so wrong with a little peace, love and understanding?! We ought to at least be able to respect each other's opinions and beliefs. That is what living in a free country is about. Anyway, just a dream....elizabeth

Working on paper with this abstract.  When I work on paper I often feel much more free, as if I don't have to get it right. I like that. Nice abstracts come from this. However, they do need to be framed. Ideas to work with include matting with a frame, floated over a matt and framed or could also be mounted on a cradle board.

Day FIFTEEN….. This is actually a painting that I have revised giving it a little bit different of a twist. I love the surface texture that working on a previously painted canvas will give you.  If you would like to see the older painting, I will link it here.  I was willing for it to become a totally new painting, but I wanted it to remain a vertical and keep the same title. It was already wired on the back for a vertical and the title had been written. Seems to have retained the same feel to it and somewhat similar overall color.  Adowa is an African dance…can you feel the movement?

Doodles ...... Referring back to my sketch book, I found a small thumbnail sketch that caught my eye.  I had drawn tons of these while on a three hour flight with my daughters to New York this last summer.  This painting had came to that point where I felt it was finished, yet it just needed something else.  Those thumb sketches came to mind and as I flipped through the pages this one said, "pick me"!

"o.k., so what does this remind you of?"... I can paint, but then when it comes to titles it can take me forever.  I am often asked how I come up with my wonderful titles.  Well, I don't mind confessing at all that it is my wordy husband and he can pretty much do it instantly.  Now and then he will grow impatient with me and will say, "o.k. what does it remind you of?"  and I will usually respond with "I don't know, I'm paying attention to colors, shapes, etc"  But, this one reminded me of my dad who was an avid golf player, thus the title "Match Play"!

By the way if your interested, I've been posting these on a site called Daily Paintworks with a beginning auction price of $50....sold "Fractal" yesterday. thank you!!  I'm calling these my "mini" series and I think they could be collected making a wonderful wall display.
