Song of Songs

Song of Songs
Acrylic on paper
9 x 12 inch

SOLD

I'm often painting smaller abstracts as well. These are done on bristol board paper. However, by the time I'm finished layering with gesso and the acrylic paints there is a lot of real surface texture built up. Lastly, a coat of Satin varnish is applied. Fits a standard matt and frame.

A collection of these ORIGINALS can be seen in my website's small painting category: Here

I just paint! Whatever happens is what happens. This one is a small painting but it has lots of layers (paint) creating lots of surface texture. It wasn't that it was intentional, it's just that it took that long for this painting to emerge. Some are quick to find, other's take time.  I would define it as not only having RICH color, but also a rich surface texture. It can be seen by clicking on the zoom feature in my website or click here to see it. What do you think?!

SO, in titling I turned to my hubby who titles the majority of my paintings. Once in awhile, I come up with a good one. smile. Anyway, often he will asked, 'so, what does it remind you of?' To which I replied, 'can't you see it?!' 'it's like swampy, there's a tree, water, kinda has a southern feel to it'. Immediately, he came up with "Bayou"...and that's why we call him 'title man'!

Often times, people will want to know what an artist's thoughts are while painting. With this one it was with the people that are now fighting to survive in the mess that a socialist government leaning towards dictatorship  has created. Having been born a duo citizen the Venezuelan in me is heart broken for what the people in Caracas are enduring. Prayers for these people and the country are interwoven into each brushstroke of this painting. Pray for Venezuela. May they be uplifted.

Free to dream.

Daydream
Acrylic on 30" x 40" canvas

SOLD

"Everything starts as somebody's daydream." Larry Niven

Ever daydream?!

"What was the artist thinking while creating this work?" is a common question asked by collectors. Here are my thoughts:

It's good to dream and might as well dream big.  I am so thankful to be able to bring dreams to reality through the process of creating.  When I posted this painting on instagram the question was asked of me as to what the dream was about?  The short answer, "A world in which every one truly loves each other"  The longer version, is it was painted on election day here in the US (Nov. 8th), I was thinking about the division/sadness this election has caused in our nation, among family, friends, communities, etc., Like no other I have ever seen. Crazy. The dream was that we could all get along, loving each other and living in peace. What's so wrong with a little peace, love and understanding?! We ought to at least be able to respect each other's opinions and beliefs. That is what living in a free country is about. Anyway, just a dream....elizabeth

Feeling fall in the air here.  This is a very large painting for me! However, I do find it easier to work on larger canvases than small ones.  I feel as if if this one has an atmospheric and landscapish feeling to it.  Kinda like a cool autumn breeze on a mountain side.

I seem to love the color pink, as I'm realizing that I've been using it a lot lately. Even in this painting there's a touch of it.  This painting sat around for awhile unsure if it was finished. You know that feeling that there's just something more, but what it is? One day, I  happened to glance over at it and in my mind's eye saw the pink. It was complete. Perfect touch!

Modern Expressionistic Abstract Painting "Sea of Love" by Elizabeth Chapman

"Sea of Love"
Acrylic on 40" x 40" x 1.5" canvas

ORIGINAL 2016

SOLD

This one sold on it's first listed day. Amazing. Fresh off the easel and gone.  I'm working here with a color that I absolutely love to mix. It's the sweet potato of paints. So what's that got to do with painting. Well, if I were asked to pick only one food to survive on, it would be the sweet potato.  why? because it is packed full of every vitamin. Well, if I had to pick one color to survive on as a painter, it would be phthalo blue. (ok, would also need yellow and white for mixing) Every variation of green and blue from the darkest to the lightest, seen in this painting was mixed using that one color. It's perfect.

This painting was done as a commission for Elise Cripe.  Two years ago I did one for her first born, Ellerie  and her together. This one is Elise and her second born, Piper.  The paintings "Mother's Love" and "More Love" are being paired up and displayed in her home together.  Working on a couple more this week and an order next week.  Seems like once started...they just keep coming!

I love this painting! Definitely in the modern abstract camp. This was meant to be a small piece on paper to which I would use to learn mounting on cradle board, which is basically a wood panel.  You can check it out here which is the same place that I have been purchasing my canvases from for years. It was relatively easy, easy to do. You want to make sure that you varnish your painting before mounting and paint the sides of the cradle board. In this case it is a 1 3/4" depth side that I painted black. Then simply cover (don't be stingy here) the back with a mixed media paste and attach to board.  Use a printmaker's roller on the front being sure to press down firmly flattening and wiping excess media from sides.  Don't worry, it all dries clear. When dry I coated the top and sides with an additional coat of varnish. That's it!   Turned out beautifully and plan on mounting more of my abstracts this way. So easy with a very professional finish.

Fidelity Two.... Modern Contemporary Abstract

Fidelity Two
Acrylic on 24" x 24" x 1.5" gallery canvas
Available for purchase from my web gallery, click here

SOLD

"Fidelity Two" would make a nice compliment to "Fidelity" (the last post) as they were painted at the same time.  Again, another rich earth tone.... stay tuned though as a very colorful one is up next!

Busy... busy....busy....is they way it's been around the Chapman household lately... but it's the best kind of busy as it involves family.  I am trusting that the inspirations and time will be provided as needed.
