I just paint! Whatever happens is what happens. This one is a small painting but it has lots of layers (paint) creating lots of surface texture. It wasn't that it was intentional, it's just that it took that long for this painting to emerge. Some are quick to find, other's take time.  I would define it as not only having RICH color, but also a rich surface texture. It can be seen by clicking on the zoom feature in my website or click here to see it. What do you think?!

SO, in titling I turned to my hubby who titles the majority of my paintings. Once in awhile, I come up with a good one. smile. Anyway, often he will asked, 'so, what does it remind you of?' To which I replied, 'can't you see it?!' 'it's like swampy, there's a tree, water, kinda has a southern feel to it'. Immediately, he came up with "Bayou"...and that's why we call him 'title man'!

The painting above is the completed version. What do you think?! The image below is that same painting from several years ago and I really liked it then, but never felt as if it was ready. It was  among a stack of "not sure that I'm done" paintings. Yet, I just couldn't figure it out. Several attempts were made, but still nothing was enough.  Turned out what it needed was a willingness to take a risk....and so I did! Now it is finished!...and ready to leave home!  Enjoy!!

I have slowly been listing these small abstract paintings into my Etsy shop.  You can see them together on my studio wall, here. There not as easy to paint as they appear being small in size. This is the first one to have sold from that series and it's exciting.  Here is the link to my Etsy store where they can be seen together.

I love this painting! Definitely in the modern abstract camp. This was meant to be a small piece on paper to which I would use to learn mounting on cradle board, which is basically a wood panel.  You can check it out here which is the same place that I have been purchasing my canvases from for years. It was relatively easy, easy to do. You want to make sure that you varnish your painting before mounting and paint the sides of the cradle board. In this case it is a 1 3/4" depth side that I painted black. Then simply cover (don't be stingy here) the back with a mixed media paste and attach to board.  Use a printmaker's roller on the front being sure to press down firmly flattening and wiping excess media from sides.  Don't worry, it all dries clear. When dry I coated the top and sides with an additional coat of varnish. That's it!   Turned out beautifully and plan on mounting more of my abstracts this way. So easy with a very professional finish.

Modern Expressionistic Abstract "Wit" by Elizabeth Chapman

Wit
Acrylic on 8" x 8" canvas

ORIGINAL 2016

Available for purchase from my Etsy store: HERE

Speaking today for the Studio55 club in my hometown of Springfield, Mo.  The topic will be on marketing.  As I'm going over my notes this morning and thinking about how to open this presentation,  I'm reminded of those very first years as I was building my business.  Those initial ideas came from a generation of younger entrepreneurs that more than likely because of our weakened economy began seeing the importance of working for yourself. They have been successful and are everywhere today. They are a huge inspiration!!  In my own family I have seen this with my daughters owners of A Beautiful Mess.  There story can be read on there blog: HERE I happen to be very proud of them and I think you will enjoy their wit!

This one has been reminding me so much of a previous painting that I had done "Just for Fun".  Here, I am not thinking or worrying any about any of "the rules".  This type of painting occurs when there is a need to totally get away and just paint. The kind of creativity that children naturally possess before the "don't color outside the lines" begins to be encouraged. Just let it flow and paint just for fun!  It has been titled Assimila as it is the assimilation of many years of painting.

Modern Expressionistic Abstract Painting "Mardi" by Elizabeth Chapman

Mardi
Acrylic on 30" x 40" canvas

Available

This painting will be shipped to Veranda's Fine Art Gallery & Gift Shop in Fair Haven, New Jersey.  I just finished another one (post next) that will also be sent as well.  I was contacted by Debbie through my Etsy store on the possibility of sending work to her gallery. The distance is far, from Springfield, Mo to New Jersey so obviously the pieces will have to be exclusive to Veranda's. We will start with a few large and small pieces and see how it goes.

This painting is another one from this summer in which I have been working on and refining a new painting technique. Will I continue with this and totally disregard previous ways . Certainly not, but more than likely it will be incorporated into my own.  It's good to experiment, try new things and make new discoveries.  All a part of the process.  Looking back upon my painting career, I can see that the element in which I most consistent with is in the way I begin, follow through and finish a painting.  There will be the initial spark or idea in which I am inspired. It can be a certain color scheme, something that caught my eye, a concept, a photograph, etc.,....the list is endless. This is what drives me to the canvas laying down those first marks in which the dialogue begins.  It can be the hardest step. From this point one idea will lead to the next, which will in turn lead to the next, then the next and next until there is a  feeling of completion. Sometimes I have to let go of previous ideas in order to push the painting forward.  That can be difficult as well.  The important thing is to allow yourself the freedom to paint outside the box.  It's all a play with color, values, shapes, lines and texture. What and how I choose to paint with may always vary!

Melodious Beauty, Contemporary Abstract Painting "Arioso" by Elizabeth Chapman

Arioso
Acrylic on 30" x 48" x 1.5" canvas

SOLD

Ever spent time looking for something and then find that there it was right in front of you the whole time. Kinda what this painting was like for me.  I had spent so much time up close working on it that I just wasn't able t see it's beauty. About to give up, I drew lines in charcoal  with the intent to later come back and work it over.  Wow. There was no way I was going to do another thing to it. The vertical lines did it. It had been there all along. Melodious.

Contemporary Palette Knife Abstract Expressionistic Painting, Custom Order by Elizabeth Chapman

'Little Summer'
Acrylic on 24" x 30" x 1.5" canvas

Available as a custom order on Etsy by clicking; HERE

This painting has been one of my most popular paintings, if not most popular abstract on Etsy.  It was painted for a person who had an interest in the first painting that came out "Indian Summer"., 2009. Later there was a two panel commission, "Better Two" and then there was "Summer Splay" a 48" x 48" in 2013.

Because of it's popularity, I have decided to paint some more of these.  A custom order for a similar  painting to "Little Summer" can be purchased from the listing I created on Etsy by following the link above or email me: elizabethchapmanart@gmail.com

The paint is thickly applied with a palette knife on the canvas as colors are mixed and merged together. Beautiful!

Mixing more grays. Here I am painting with a much more neutral color palette intertwined with pops of color.  This one was painted after having done a series of floral abstracts using lots of bright colors. As I begun, I was thinking about several paintings I had done several years ago "Ablaze" and "Resonate" following a high horizontal composition.

Enjoyed painting the florals, but time to move on to the abstracts and a larger canvas. It's been a while since I've painted a red abstract.  Challenging myself to work with mixing grays here. Harder than I thought it would be.

Daffodils as they were popping up a few weeks ago indicating the first signs of Spring, where the inspiration for this painting.  My intention was to begin the painting just as I would any of my abstracts and then find where the flowers where to fit in. Then it was simply a matter of layering enriching the color and contrast.
