Journey

Journey

So many layers and so many changes as I progressed through this painting. Click on the image to see it closer. I use acrylic markers in my paintings in particular for the final marks. They are acrylic so just like the paint they are not going to fade. From the initial brushstrokes to the finale detailing with markers it truly was a journey. There were a few frustrations along the way but it all ended with joy as it's beauty was revealed.

Daffodils as they were popping up a few weeks ago indicating the first signs of Spring, where the inspiration for this painting.  My intention was to begin the painting just as I would any of my abstracts and then find where the flowers where to fit in. Then it was simply a matter of layering enriching the color and contrast.

Now and then I'll take a notion to paint some florals.  There is something about painting from the real thing that keeps my interest.  This was a bouquet that I bought from our local grocery store and placed in a favorite vase of mine.  I began with a brush, but couldn't help changing over to a palette knife as the paint began to build.  The paint is thick, thick, thick.

a yearly tradition.

Sole
Acrylic on 24" x 24" x 1.5" canvas
Available

SOLD

In love with a single flower plus bud in this green vase.  This was painted from a still life set up from the annual peonie blooms in our back yard.  It is meant to be an abstract capturing more of the essence or the gesturally feel of the floral than a realistic representation.  Different this year in that I chose to work from a single stem rather than a bouquet.  Just changing it up a bit…and challenging myself.

love blooms.

Love Blooms
Acrylic on 24" x 30" x 1.5" canvas
2013 Original
Available

In the new studio painting this morning on the annual peonie floral painting.  Originally, I did not plan for this each year, but it seems to have now become a tradition.  The inspiration comes from a floral bush that we have in our background that blooms each Spring around the middle of May.  For the last six years I have brought in a bouquet of cut flowers and painted a floral abstract.  I was working this morning on this year's painting which reminded of the one I did last year, "Love Blooms" which was a full bouquet, now available from my Etsy shop: HERE.

Peonies in our back yard have bloomed and I always love painting these each spring.  It is usually around Mother's Day that they are in full bloom, but this year they have blossomed early here in Missouri.  This a single flower on a small canvas painted with a palette knife capturing more of a gestural rendering than a realistic portrayal.  Painting could be hung as it is or further enhanced by framing it.  Next up I will post the vase and bouquet of these Peonies.  Hope you are enjoying the spring collection of floral paintings....thanks for reading!  Enjoy!

 Available, $100.00

Sold

I have been obsessively painting floral abstracts for days now..."Cali" is the first from this new group.  My interest has been more of captivating a feeling and so I begin with a quick gesturally drawing.  Then comes the COLOR!!  I also noticed that when I paint the floral abstracts I like to use a palette knife.
