Jubilant, Contemporary Abstract Heart by Missouri Artist Elizabeth Chapman

'Jubilant Love'

Mixed Media on 7.5" x 7.5" 140lb. watercolor paper
Ready to frame, $75.00

The "heart series" was in need of a little attention so I took some time to paint a few new works.  Three of these have just recently sold to a client who is going to frame them for a guest bathroom.  Thank you,  Ena!  This is a wonderful idea for small abstracts as they are collectible and can be used to fill a wall space.  Just another idea.....

God is love and in His love he gives us life to be celebrated with jubilance!

today's painting......

Today's painting evolved from a watercolor painting  to layering with gouache and then acrylic to it's finale charcoal gesturally lines.   Along the way there was some playing with new tools scraping through and creating intriguing lines and textures.

Yes, it's another small mixed media painting....so where is this taking me.   Well, sometimes I believe it's just good to take a break or change things up.  I love this post that my daughter Elsie wrote on her blog about having taken a break from painting. You can read about it on A Beautiful Mess, here.  Excited to see her new direction!

As I have been posting lately these paintings are being started differently.  I am beginning with gestural drawings in graphite to the feel of music and then bringing in color.  I've been enjoying the look of the graphite showing through the paint and the addition of lines, creating another dimension of depth.

Today...not feeling much in the mood to paint....

I walked into my studio where I have an enourmous canvas (60" x 40")  that my husband has put up on the wall for me.  I have been staring at it for days....with various ideas and inspirations coming to mind, but a lack of motivation to begin.  I decided I would start with my new found mixed media method and paint some small abstracts, perhaps this would warm me up for that monster on the wall.

Hey, it worked!!... after having painted on the small ones (they'll get posted later) I took up a piece of Nupastel and began gesturally drawing to music on the large canvas.  Loved it!  Then came a decision on color and I began painting.  I was so wrapped up and truly enjoying the experience that I have decided to not worry about getting it done....and just simply go back to it from time to time, day to day....layering and enjoying the process.  We'll see!

Upcoming Art Show! June 5th - July 1st at Hawthorn's Gallery

As I began this journey in pursuing work as a professional artist nearly one year ago, I never ever dreamed I would be showing my work in a gallery so soon. Their are nearly fifty pieces that will be shown at Hawthorn's Gallery beginning with the First Friday Night Art Walk on June 5th and running through the month of June.

The works range from realistic, to semi-abstract to purely abstractly- from working in mixed media, to transparent watercolors to acrylics- from traditional to contemporary- from very small to very large pieces- subject matter also ranges from florals to abstract and prices range from the smallest pieces (4"x4") 20-25$ to the largest pieces (3ftx4ft) $500. A variety of many sorts.

If you live around the Springfield area and can attend I promise you will enjoy the show. Those of you who can't attend because of distance I thought I would post the majority of these pieces online for your enjoyment each day.
Those of you have been following since last fall, some of these you will have already seen. To all of you, I just want you to know how much I have appreciated the encouragement you have sent me through your comments. It has meant soooooooooooooo much to me! Thank you!

This piece was one of the first pieces to be in a juried art show. It is a mixed media piece, meaning their are layers of rice paper, acrylic and watercolor paint. It is one of the smaller pieces (8"x10") that has been matted and framed in an antiquish frame. The title of the piece is Mt. Zion.
For any further information on this piece, you can contac me or Hawthorn's Gallery.

I will try not to be so wordy each day as I post these paintings from the show! You can also view these along with my new daily paintings on the daily painters abstract gallery blog each day. There are some spectacular works from other artist's on there. I would love to hear of your favorites. Enjoy the show!!

Just finished....

"Cycles"
Watercolor/Acrylic on Watercolor Canvas
18" x 24"

.....painting the sides on this abstract painting.  A little bit different this time in that I worked with transparent watercolors on a watercolor canvas.   Most often when I paint with watercolors it is realistically, but this time I decided I would try working abstractly with the watercolors on canvas.  That was the only pre-conceived idea that I had!!  The painting has been sealed with a protective varnish, so there won't be a need to matt and frame this watercolor.  Ready to hang!
Spent the day wiring the backs and painting the sides of acrylic paintings.  Beginning to get things ready for the June art show.  I know it's a ways away, but I'm not a very good procrastinator. Besides it just seemed like a good rainy day project.
