I'm ready for a new year! How about you?! New beginnings are exciting. I'm looking forward to posting about my new painting challenge. It is something that just came to my mind one day and as I began to toss the idea around I found my self becoming inspired. But before I do that, I thought I might squeeze this painting in as it is a more recent one that did not get posted.

As I look at it and see myself having worked with a lot of neutral colors, I am reminded of when I first began seriously painting back almost ten years ago, all color and no neutrals. I know how could that be. Well, I would purchase paint much like going to a candy store. Oh, that looks good, I like that one and that one! I painted for a few years before I realized that I had never even purchased one tube or jar of white!  Many of these colors were already tinted, but still. It was all out color!

Are you ready for a funny story?...well I guess it was...kinda.

I still remember the first painting, Indian Summer where I intentionally set out to use white.  I posted about it in 2009: HERE.  The previous year I had resigned from my position as a high school art teacher to pursue this art thing. Well, it didn't take off quite as quickly as i needed it to, so I had taken a part time job in a floral store.  I was critiqued to no end for using to many white flowers(I had about 3 or 4) in the first floral arrangement that I did by myself.  I was like, your kidding me. really. I'm gone.

I set out to prove that white could be used with color and that it would not be overpowering.  That original painting was a success! My daughter Elsie, knew that and snatched it up.  That one painting led to three more similar commissioned paintings, two of which where large and one the same size.  My first commissioned painting "Better Two" were (2) 30" x 50" panels created for a young couple in my hometown of Springfield, Mo. A few years later I would paint a 48" x 48" from this same color palette for a couple's dining room on the east coast.

So, I guess I should say thank you...for telling me I used to many white flowers!

Fresh off the easel.  Gallant is the my most recent abstract painting.  Bold and bright color! This one reminded me of a similar style (although the color palettes are different) I have used with the paintings that are posted below.  With this particular style I am working with a limited palette, mixing a lot of variations applied in layered chunks of color.  COLORFUL, in Elizabeth Chapman style!

Commissioned Modern Abstract Painting "Ipseity"

Ipseity
Acrylic on 36" x 48" canvas

Commission

I'm posting the second of two paintings commissioned by Brian and Alexandra. I actually painted this one first. The inspiration for it was from "Gold Rush". The two paintings were to be different yet still go together. Scroll down to see "Archetype".  Rich colors were built up layer by layer creating lots of  real surface texture.  Funny story here. Brian and I had a mix up when communicating a problem that he saw on the right side of the painting with what appear to be shapes that looked like c/o. I searched and searched and could not find what he was pointing out. Finally, I wrote back with I can only find what your talking about on the left side of the painting.  Right away he realized the problem. Turned out working in the medical profession he reads images turned around as if from the back side. lol. My left is his right and vice versa.  After having gotten a few minor details adjusted we were done. I say we, because both paintings were a collaboration between myself and this wonderful couple that I feel I got to know along the way. This painting is now hanging in their home.

Modern Abstract Mixed Media Abstract "Posie" by Elizabeth Chapman

'Posie'
Mixed Media/Acrylic on 16" x 20" canvas

Available

Gotta love it!!

I'm listing this one as a mixed media although it is 99% acrylic. In the top right hand corner there are various types of papers that were applied to the canvas before I began painting. They have created some nice texture. Click on the photo for a larger pic or use the zoom feature in my website gallery.

Lots going on here, I agree.  Once I got into the painting the challenge became to use as much color as possible and still pull off unifying the piece. The most difficult time came later as I was trying to decide which way to display the painting. Obviously, I can only show it one way. But, I found that it could be turned in several other directions for a pleasing composition.

Contemporary Palette Knife Abstract Painting by Elizabeth Chapman

Salvo
Acrylic on 30" x 30" x 1.5" canvas

ORIGINAL

SOLD

To purchase this painting or for more information email me: elizabethchapmanart@gmail.com

This one was done with a palette knife painting. Colors are dipped out from a jar of paint, applied and mixed on the canvas. It has been a while since I did one of these and really enjoyed getting back into it.  I don't believe the image of the painting does it justice as there are so many tiny pieces of color that the camera reads much of it into one color. Much merging of color occurs.

A Bit of Red Abstract Painting "Fabulosity" by Elizabeth Chapman

Fabulosity
Acrylic on 8" x 8" x 3/4" wrap canvas
Available $85

Really contemplated being finished as I was attracted to less with this painting.  I loved the subtle value changes in the off whites and reds. Especially loved the coral on the red and bit of red in the dark.   In the end, I decided to go with it. What do you think?

This one became another floral abstract although that wasn't the intent. It's called going with the flow of the painting. Sometimes it's just better not to fight it....

I painted this abstract back in the summer just as I had moved back into my downstairs studio.  I posted about struggling with the move back to my downstairs studio, here.  Lol, I'm still adjusting.  My husband has recently built shelves to get all the paint jars off the big table and we're working on better lighting.  I paint on an easel and a table.  I begin on an easel, but as I become more focused on the painting I will place it on a table were I can turn and work on it from all sides easily.  Having all the jars put up where the canvas can't bump into them and my not having to be moving them as I paint, will help immensely with the large canvases.

Lighting has been an other problem as this is a basement room with one small window.  The room was painted white to help brighten it and we replaced the fan/light fixture with my track light fixture from  the upstairs studio.  I love being able to spotlight paintings with these.  Still it's not enough.  I had grown accustomed to working in a well lit natural light room for almost four years supplemented with overhead fluorescent lighting.  I purchased some spotlights on adjustable stands, but still not enough.  My biggest problem has been in dealing with my own shadows.  I have one spot on the table, where if I'm turned just right and don't move....well, that's not going to work. Have you seen all the movement in my abstracts?  It's been very frustrating working with shadows on the canvas and of course, the more I think about it...the more frustrated I become.  We are going to put the overhead fluorescents back in.  There not so pretty on the ceiling, but I'll take it.  There, just vented my studio frustrations! thanks for reading.  Every one has them...just a matter of working through them. Soon this studio will soon become home!

Through it all...this beautiful painting and many others were created.  On a whim, I entered it recently in an abstract art contest with CFAI for the month of October, and it won.  First Place!!  Two other gorgeous abstracts will also be spotlighted for October...check them out too.  Here is the link: Click Here
