I am an artist. That wasn't something that I could always say with certainty. It's taken many years of painting to arrive to that point. Oh sure, there was always that still small voice within that nudged me and told me that art was my gift. But until I stepped out in faith and began practicing, I could not know. So, what's this post about. It's about being certain and then again, not certain.

On the other hand painting doesn't always carry the same amount of certainty. There are many times when I feel uncertain, doubtful of the piece that I am working on.  I believe that it is the artist in me that always sees things optimistically...it will all work out, viewpoint.  This is essential when your going through that stage of a painting  that most referred to as "the ugly stage".  Just keep going.

A bit on this title. My husband is the title person.  Now and then I come up with one and when I do I like getting credit for it! When I showed him the image of this painting for title ideas, his immediate response was ooh la la. ....and I said, "that's it"!  So, there you have it.

Working on paper with this abstract.  When I work on paper I often feel much more free, as if I don't have to get it right. I like that. Nice abstracts come from this. However, they do need to be framed. Ideas to work with include matting with a frame, floated over a matt and framed or could also be mounted on a cradle board.

I have a collection of about twenty of these so far, that I have been intending to list. They were begun after a time in which I had run up against a creative block.  These happen, but then how to get out of it is easier said than done.  This time it helped me to establish a routine that was consistent yet without the tension of working for hours at a time on a large canvas. I found these manageable and still challenging.

More pink.  I have had with several commissions been asked not to use ANY pink in a painting. Understandable when purchasing a painting for the home.  Men tend to shy away from it being a girlie color.  As an artist, I love the effect that pink has, works well with so many colors and especially fond of it as an accent color. It speaks!

Rich with layers of color and texture on heavy watercolor paper.  I've noticed that even though I am still working with the same medium (acrylics) it seems that lately I've been more willing to try new things, take that last step risk or even just let it be when I'm painting on paper.  Less expectations? Maybe so.  The paper that I'm working on is a heavy (156lb) Arches watercolor paper  that I purchased in a large roll earlier this year.  I love that I can cut paper off  what ever size and will usually get 2-3 pieces out of that.  The paper is then soaked in the bath tub and then transferred to my painted drafting table.  Usually I will begin freeform with watercolor paints and a water soluble pencil.  These are the first marks from which the flow of the painting will come.  I can only take the painting to a certain point on the wet paper and then have to leave the paper to dry.  This gives me time to get a fresh perspective on the piece and I can also start a few other paper paintings at the same time.  When dry, I will come back and begin layering with the acrylics.....and playing between all the pieces.

I have to call this a mixed media painting although the surface is almost entirely covered with acrylic paint.  It was begun with watercolors.  Later, I switched to the acrylics intensifying those under lying colors.  There are still a few spots where the original watercolor layer can be seen.

I've had this one setting on the back burner, so to speak.  Adding layers, this and that from time to time for the last several weeks.  Decided with the addition of the large circle that it was done this morning and photographed it to post/list.  I have another large 30" x 40" painting on the easel that I've been yearning to get back to work on.  Thursdays/Fridays are reserved grand daughter time and I had a few extra days this week as she was sick.  We played and played and played some more! So sweet when she wakes up and the first thing she says is "grandma will you play with me?" ....of course. 

So, shifting gears now...back into artist mode and hope to spend the next 3-4 days in the studio, painting, painting and painting some more!  The painting that is setting on the easel should be ready for your enjoyment, soon!

Soon it will be time to get back to those large, large canvases.  Whether  large or small, I am always looking for the flow of the painting.  This one was begun with soaking wet 156lb watercolor paper.  Gesturally marks where then made with a black watercolor pencil.  The first layer of color was applied with watercolors while the paper was still wet. Chinese white was used in the white areas to soften the pencil marks.  Acrylics were later over laid to pop a few colors, creating more depth.

When is a painting done?  That can sometimes be difficult to determine.  I really like the simplicity and all the white in this one as it is, so have just decided to leave it alone and call it finished. Seemed to be the flow...

A total surprise as I opened my email and saw that this painting had sold.  It had just been listed to my WEB GALLERY the night before.  This is where I always place my work first.  Once it has been photographed, a title has been chosen and a price decided then it is ready.  There are some days I may place more than one painting in my online gallery.  From there I will choose paintings to use as blog post and list on other various sites.  This one never had that opportunity!

I was able to package and ship on that same day.  I then contacted Liz to let her know what a surprise and notify her that "Entree" was on it's way along with her tracking number.  Later, I received a reply that she's always watching for my work, saw this one, it spoke to her and click...she bought it!  (she is one of those who have opted to join the email list and be notified of new work) Liz is one of my repeat collectors in which I am very thankful and appreciative, as well as all of you who have purchased or simply enjoyed viewing the work online.

Many times I do hear back from the buyer in which they might describe to me where the abstract has been hung, what it has meant to them, how much better in real it appears...and sometimes even pics are sent.  I often think about many of the paintings that have sold in the past and the homes that they have gone to, where they are hanging, who might be viewing them, etc.,   It brings me much joy knowing that my work is being used as a blessing to others.  All glory and praise to God.

Expressive!

A gesturally pencil drawing was the beginning of this painting.  I pulled out my palette with watercolors and began playing and layering various colors.  There is only so much watercolor paint that you can put on paper before having to back off and let it dry.  The thickness or weight of the paper has a lot to do with how much water it will absorb.  Working through several sessions I layered colors and that was my only intent....until....I thought of that beautiful light ultramarine acrylic color that I so love.  There was also gesso layered in-between and more acrylics on top.


Reminds me a lot of a painting that I did several months ago as a commission titled "Sister Style"
which was a request from an earlier painting "Spree".   I was not at all thinking of these as I began and never thought about them until it was nearly done, but there is definitely a similarity. "Mien" will have to be framed.  The two horizontal edges are deckled, which I personally like the raw look.  If I where framing it, I would not matt it. But would have it fused to a back board as to be able to see the edges.  Something else about this paper that I like is that it shows the Arches stamp in the bottom right hand corner.  Use the zoom feature in my Web Gallery to get a close-up of the details.

Unique style!

Lots of fun in switching out and trying various different materials.  Even though it does have a similar re-sembalance to two earlier paintings, it still has it's own story to tell.
