This is another one of my larger paintings that have SOLD, yay!! recently. (I am offering it as a print with various options: HERE) I do get excited with each painting that is sold...there is a 'thank you' praise God followed by a 'happy dance'! It's an income of mine so it means that I can keep doing what I enjoy, creating. Exciting. It's in the process, the challenge, the learning, the discoveries and in knowing it's good that I am fulfilled as an artist. Many times, I will sit back as a viewer without the thoughts of an artist simply to enjoy. That will bring to mind the purpose of all this and that is for you, the viewer. Art creates a space in time, a way to get away and a place that brings a stillness within. It brings me much joy knowing that I am a part of pointing to beauty. I am so very thankful!

It's winter time here in the Ozarks of Missouri, cold and dark.  But, every morning that I walk into my studio I am greeted by sunshine! Yes, that's right it is presently bright and cheery in my studio. This month I am working with mostly yellow. It's proving to be quite the challenge and stretching me to work with unfamiliar color palettes. I'm ready for a new year! How about you?! New beginnings are exciting. I'm looking forward to posting about my new painting challenge. It is something that just came to my mind one day and as I began to toss the idea around I found my self becoming inspired. But before I do that, I thought I might squeeze this painting in as it is a more recent one that did not get posted.

As I look at it and see myself having worked with a lot of neutral colors, I am reminded of when I first began seriously painting back almost ten years ago, all color and no neutrals. I know how could that be. Well, I would purchase paint much like going to a candy store. Oh, that looks good, I like that one and that one! I painted for a few years before I realized that I had never even purchased one tube or jar of white!  Many of these colors were already tinted, but still. It was all out color!

Are you ready for a funny story?...well I guess it was...kinda.

I still remember the first painting, Indian Summer where I intentionally set out to use white.  I posted about it in 2009: HERE.  The previous year I had resigned from my position as a high school art teacher to pursue this art thing. Well, it didn't take off quite as quickly as i needed it to, so I had taken a part time job in a floral store.  I was critiqued to no end for using to many white flowers(I had about 3 or 4) in the first floral arrangement that I did by myself.  I was like, your kidding me. really. I'm gone.

I set out to prove that white could be used with color and that it would not be overpowering.  That original painting was a success! My daughter Elsie, knew that and snatched it up.  That one painting led to three more similar commissioned paintings, two of which where large and one the same size.  My first commissioned painting "Better Two" were (2) 30" x 50" panels created for a young couple in my hometown of Springfield, Mo. A few years later I would paint a 48" x 48" from this same color palette for a couple's dining room on the east coast.

So, I guess I should say thank you...for telling me I used to many white flowers!

It is Arches 156lb acid free watercolor paper often gessoed before painting on it.  A friend pointed out to me how it reminded her of the coastline near Sydney, thus the title.  I just love to play with color, shapes, line, etc., it's an adventure for me. This painting is from 2015 and has never been listed.  Back in the summer of 2015 I was contacted by a small gift shop/gallery on the east coast interested in a few of my paintings. This one was fresh off the easel...I loved it! and decided I would send it. So along with a few more paintings we went on an adventure that just did not work out.  I sent many of my best paintings without a single sale in over one year. I believe the rule to go by is six months.  I personally have not had good experiences with brick and mortar galleries. I do work with a few online galleries that have been a wonderful experience.  However, I always prefer to make my sales independently as running through a gallery will cost anywhere from 30%-45% in a commission fee. I know people are often surprised to learn how much a gallery makes from selling a painting.  But, they do promote with ALOT more exposure.

Anyway, "Ingress" is back...and looking to be loved by someone!

I began another post this morning with the new mini 2016 paintings.  Then, I found myself reflecting upon this last year and thinking perhaps that would make a better post.  I am not one for New Year's Resolutions nor setting goals. Not that  I don't believe in them, it's just that they don't work for me. It's more from an overall vision that they unfold.  For this past month I have been working on and writing down new painting ideas, marketing and overall stuff.  Those could be used for another post. For now, I want to reflect on 2015...

This has been my BEST year if it where to be measured monetarily.  It all depends on how a person measures success. In 2008, I resigned from a well paying teaching position as a high school art teacher to pursue my dream (those earlier post can be read here, see side bar.)  The first year I worked every day, literally from 8-3 painting and teaching myself everything that I would need in order to market my own work. I made a three digit income that year!! But, it was a success in that you've got to start somewhere and that it had.  Each year thereafter, there has been an increase of which I have always been thankful. I can now say that I am making the same income that I was as an employed public school teacher.  In that respect I am so ever more thankful for all the years of hard work and persevering.  I am now hoping to double that!! which means....more work, work, work!!

So, what has made the biggest difference with this last year? Certainly, years of experience do play in. But, let me just give credit to where credit is due. I paint from my heart.  It could be one that is full of joy, praise or thanksgiving or yes even with sadness, grief or worry.  Most always, I begin with knowing that my hands will do the physical work, BUT the creating comes from the Master Painter.  In faith, I step in to begin the work and He is faithful to gift me, complete it and find the rightful owners. 

The painting that I have chosen for this post is one of my favorites from this past year. My favorites are not always necessarily the most popular of my abstracts.  In fact, some of my least favorites often turn out to be the most popular paintings.  So, I never know. But, I do know that it pays to be faithful, show up to that easel each day...and paint!  

I have read of my work being described as poetic. Since I so often am inspired by and paint to music, I like to think of it as a visual musical composition.

Working on paper with this abstract.  When I work on paper I often feel much more free, as if I don't have to get it right. I like that. Nice abstracts come from this. However, they do need to be framed. Ideas to work with include matting with a frame, floated over a matt and framed or could also be mounted on a cradle board.

This one was done with a palette knife painting. Colors are dipped out from a jar of paint, applied and mixed on the canvas. It has been a while since I did one of these and really enjoyed getting back into it.  I don't believe the image of the painting does it justice as there are so many tiny pieces of color that the camera reads much of it into one color. Much merging of color occurs.

I simply love creating and will work with a painting until it reaches that  breathless moment.  A big part of the success of this painting was the painting underneath.  Why do I say that? Because it weren't for that terrible, I can't stand it painting....I wouldn't have gone on and if I wouldn't have gone the beauty of the true meant to be painting would not have emerged. 

Persistence paid off as someone else has fallen in love with this one!  It will be used in decorating a new apartment.  Always love hearing from those who collect my work and what it means to them.  I am ever so thankful for each one of them!

"How long did it take you to paint that painting?" is a question that I am oftened asked.  Why does it matter? Is time being equated to value?  I think this question is probably most asked when it comes to art. It's a skill like any other that takes years to build. So, whether a painting takes a few hours, weeks or months may just depend on how many foundational years an artist has worked.  I once heard an artist answer that question with "all my life"..and thought that was a very good answer.

Why doesn't a athlete get asked "how long did it take you to win that race?" It obviously took more than the that 30 second in that sprint, as it took years of training to get to that point.   This can be applied to so many professions…yet it seems like it's the visual artist's that get popped with that question. I answered that question in  a post that I wrote after my first year into painting and working full time as a professional artist. It can be read here , warning….it's long.

This painting was commissioned as a gift.  The buyer really like "Ultramod" 40" x 60" (which is still available!) but asked if it I couldn't recreate a similar work but smaller, 40" x 40".  Ultramod, was one of those paintings of mine that I really struggled with to find it's flow, but one that has been a very well liked painting, but ironically still available.  In painting "Vanguard", I didn't really have that struggle as the composition and color scheme that I was to work from had already been created.  However, when I am being asked to recreate a painting from a previous work I feel there is a fine line there between a similar painting and also allowing the new painting to be it's own unique voice too.  So, in that sense there is a struggle when working a similar painting.  "Vanguard" turned out to be a lighter painting with more contrast.  The struggle is in letting go and accepting that similar means similar and not the exact same.  There is still that comparison, though.  My husband liked Vanguard better…you can also choose.  If it's Ultramod…then yay…it's available..and for sale! perhaps for you???

This little figurative abstract was created from a photo of a young couple and their twin sons.  Fanny and I worked together going through many photos narrowing it down to this favorite. They live in Spain, but were in Argentina visiting family on the boys' first birthday in this photo.

Orange was not a color that they had in their home and one that she was particularly fond of, so I steered away from it.  My objective when painting these are to capture a feeling of the moment more  than an realistic representation.  Together, close and happy!

This painting has been in the works for quite some time and recently went back to give it some tender loving care.  There was a lot that I liked, but had too much not working for the whole.  I resolved it by focusing more on defining it's high horizontal composition, still retaining it's original identity.  I love the texture that is built up when layers upon layers of paint are built up. Many times it is not done intentionally just happens as I am searching for the flow/direction of a painting. Yet works. Unfortunately, texture is not one of the elements that is visible on images.  SO much more to appreciate in real.


Well, I'm off to start a painting today with an abstracted landscape idea that came to me as we were on our way to eat with our kids last night.  I also think about food while painting…Sky,mountains, beach scene.  Warm yellow/oranges, purple/blues and off white. Another large, large…we'll see where it goes. Perhaps work on a figurative too.  Weather is finally warming up, so time to start getting some outside work done.  Hoping to clean the garden and plant peas this afternoon.  Then back to painting in the evening.  Enjoy your day.

This was a commissioned figurative abstract for Elise Blaha from the blog: 'enjoy it.'  She contacted me as she is friends and works with my daughters Elsie and Emma of  A Beautiful Mess, inquiring if I would be interested in creating this painting of her and Ellerie. How could I not?! Such an adorable picture of these two.  The photo that I used is in part of her blog banner or instagram @elisejoy if you would like to see it.

I did not know Elise and so decided to check her blog out.  I left reading her blog inspirationally pumped and I'm not through reading it yet. There is so much. You couldn't possibly miss finding something you would enjoy reading. She has been blogging since 2005. I found this post on posting in the section: Blog Content which caught my eye for ideas.  loved it. Currently, she is starting a birthday challenge called make29 for her birthday this year.  I'm not quite sure how she finds the time for all that she does.  She certainly, is an inspiration.
