This is the third painting that I did in response to a commissioned project. Scroll down to see the other two. I was afraid that my client wasn't happy with the first one that I painted, so I painted two more.  Turned out she absolutely loved the first one, once she saw it in real and in her home. This being the third, I was still working with her color palette...but by this time I was needing to let go. A much bolder, colorful and expressive painting was the result. I do love this painting as I feel it has a lively Spanish feel to it.  In time some one will find it as the perfect painting for their home!

I've been enjoying painting without so much rushing to photograph, title and list.  New paintings are piling up against the wall in the studio.  They still have not been photograph and I still need to begin working on my new website where I will begin listing them.   But, hey...I've got all summer, right?

As I previously posted, I painted three paintings in order to give a client the opportunity to choose the piece that best fitted her dream room. This one was the second one still using the same color  palette, but in a much bolder style.  The size of the canvas is a bit bigger than the standard 36" x 48" that I have always used. I had the 40" x 48" canvases custom made in order to have a bit more heigth  in what I thought might help for rooms with high ceilings. I found that I really like the extra few inches to paint on as well.  

My first large canvas was a 24" x 48"...looking back I remember how big and lost I felt. The more you paint on large canvases the more natural it becomes. It's like having a bigger playground to play on! Now, I find the large canvases to be SO much easier to work on than the small ones.  For now, I've got eight 40" x 40" that I'm going through with a series of paintings.  I will soon be re-ordering some more of these custom ordered 40" x 48" from Rupen, at canvas place.com.  Not getting paid to mention this business, I just have always loved working on these canvases. They are of good quality and the price is good. Shipping can be costly on the large, large and have found that a 50% sale at Michael's in my home town is a wonderful thing. (but need to have a large back end vehicle or a pick up truck in order to get them home)

I began another post this morning with the new mini 2016 paintings.  Then, I found myself reflecting upon this last year and thinking perhaps that would make a better post.  I am not one for New Year's Resolutions nor setting goals. Not that  I don't believe in them, it's just that they don't work for me. It's more from an overall vision that they unfold.  For this past month I have been working on and writing down new painting ideas, marketing and overall stuff.  Those could be used for another post. For now, I want to reflect on 2015...

This has been my BEST year if it where to be measured monetarily.  It all depends on how a person measures success. In 2008, I resigned from a well paying teaching position as a high school art teacher to pursue my dream (those earlier post can be read here, see side bar.)  The first year I worked every day, literally from 8-3 painting and teaching myself everything that I would need in order to market my own work. I made a three digit income that year!! But, it was a success in that you've got to start somewhere and that it had.  Each year thereafter, there has been an increase of which I have always been thankful. I can now say that I am making the same income that I was as an employed public school teacher.  In that respect I am so ever more thankful for all the years of hard work and persevering.  I am now hoping to double that!! which means....more work, work, work!!

So, what has made the biggest difference with this last year? Certainly, years of experience do play in. But, let me just give credit to where credit is due. I paint from my heart.  It could be one that is full of joy, praise or thanksgiving or yes even with sadness, grief or worry.  Most always, I begin with knowing that my hands will do the physical work, BUT the creating comes from the Master Painter.  In faith, I step in to begin the work and He is faithful to gift me, complete it and find the rightful owners. 

The painting that I have chosen for this post is one of my favorites from this past year. My favorites are not always necessarily the most popular of my abstracts.  In fact, some of my least favorites often turn out to be the most popular paintings.  So, I never know. But, I do know that it pays to be faithful, show up to that easel each day...and paint!  

I have read of my work being described as poetic. Since I so often am inspired by and paint to music, I like to think of it as a visual musical composition.

Going back to find the original post on this and realizing that I never got it posted on my blog. oops! This one was another 2015 favorite with it's neutral colors contrasted against pops of color.  It begun as a floral abstract and well as you can see...something changed. Thus the title.

Well, I haven't posted in over a week due to an upper back muscle strain,  EXCRUCIATING..... OMG.   I have not yet picked up a paintbrush (this is a previous painting) and to be honest I even wondered if I would be painting again.   It amazes me how the abstract paintings really have a language of their own.  If you scroll down to the last post and read- "Asleep" was speaking about a time for healing.  The process is slow going, but going.... and just like the buds the desire to paint is VERY much there.... and that is a blessing!   It's a new day......

Snowed again last night!  Looking out the window at the bare white covered trees that seem to be asleep makes me think about times of healing and restoration.  As they are resting now, in another month or so.... they will begin to bud and bloom again.... bright and beautiful!  There is also a beauty to be found during this time of the season knowing that this is the way nature works.  Knowing that beneath the snow on the leafless trees there are buds ready to emerge when the time is right.  Realize that when things are not going like we think they should... still they are going..... For everything there is a season...

If you have followed my blog at any length you have by now recognized that I am into changes.  The latest abstracts are in these warm tones and working with a layering process, but still in an abstract expressionistic style.  The only preconceived idea with these have been the color schemes.  I just begin (sometimes this is the hardest step) and then follow a dialogue that occurs between the painting and myself until completion.
