To revisit a painting is to rework it long after it has been declared as finished or maybe even exhibited, as this one has been.  The before image of this painting is from 2009 and I had really enjoyed the simplicity of the design from the beginning.  As time went on, I would look at it and feel as if perhaps others couldn't see what I was seeing, thinking maybe I had just stopped to soon.  So, I went back in using the original design as the foundation to elaborate on with the intention of keeping it much the same. Well, one thing led to the next, then another and so continued.

I did a little research on this topic, because I was wondering about how to sign a painting like this on the back.  Is it o.k. to change the title? Do you list it as revisited? Well, what I found was interesting. I learned that there have been many well known artists that have had exhibits showcasing only their paintings that have been revisited.  I don't think I'll ever be a famous artist or have enough of these for one single show, but I will sign the back as revisited with the year and keep the original title.

Parlour: originally, a formal sitting room, any living room, a semi-private sitting room in a hotel,  a business establishment, etc..,  

This reminds me of a room that is full of life.  A place where one can spend time enjoying the company of family and others.  It makes me think of a room in our house that was purposely set aside for this exact purpose.   Years ago we decided that we would remove the t.v. from our upstairs living room in order to have a place to visit with less distractions.  We all have our own individual spaces but this place is special as it is our gathering spot.

Interesting how this painting came about as I painted the bottom side up and then turned it over and saw this scene.  I love the color scheme and loose gestural lines and I'm really considering it for a large painting which would be titled "The Parlour" (thanks Donnie!)  Lately, I have been feeling so inspired.  Someone once asked me "how do you know when your inspired?'  I had to think about this one for a bit.  The answer I came up with is..."it's kinda like when you begin feeling hungry and you know you need to eat"  Don't know how else to explain it.  More playing and experimenting, perhaps even some figurative and floral abstracts.....we'll see......

I usually like to leave the interpreting of my abstracts to the viewer, allowing a personal response.  This painting was completed in several more sessions than I ordinarily take.  In the first phase of it I saw a tree beginning to emerge and it was at this point that I felt it was completed.  Yet... the more I looked at it  I just wasn't totally satisfied.  It was at the point of needing to take a risk that would either make it or it would  become something else.  Either way... you've got to believe it will work and take the plunge.

That was when I went back into the painting with layering and before I knew it I was into the circles.

Life is always in a state of growing.  Sometimes there are stages of what seem like no growth, but those are needed into for the new growth to occur.  Being an artist is a lot like that as well.  It can be frustrating when you hit those times where it feels like nothing is happening.  I was there recently.  In fact, I felt like   I had lost my creativity and was finished with painting.  I am encouraged from what I hear from this painting.  It speaks to me about being patient, listening, abiding and believing that the Creator of creativity is always at work.  This creativity like a circle has no end.

'Selah'.... a musical pause.  I am not a musician but I am thinking a selah must be a lot like the negative space within a painting or drawing.  The space that surrounds an object is just as much a part of the whole.  It connects, gives the eye places to rest and all of it is a part of the plan, the bigger picture.  I see our lives like that as well... we all need times of pausing, resting and meditating to make us whole.

Sometimes the most beautiful paintings emerge from what I am thinking is truly going to be the biggest mess ever made.  This is a heavily textured palette knife painting. There was much paint going on without a glimpse of the direction it would take, but I was determined to continue working until a painting emerged.  Layer upon layer.... and then there it was!  In the end I turned my palette knife on it's side to create the lines that carry it through.  A beautiful mess! (my daughter)... sound familiar?!!

Oops...just noticed that I haven't posted since last Sunday!  I try to spend my spare time wisely as I am now taking care of Penelope for a good portion of the day.  I've had to make some decisions in prioritizing my time .... and she is definitely it for now!  I am still painting at every opportunity that arises  and well... managing.  So, much less time on the internet, lately!

This is another painting from 'the hearts' series.... I am SOOOO looking forward to February and Valentine's Day!! This series began for me as way to provide a few paintings to help the Springfield Arts Council raise money for local art educational programs.  The first two paintings "Love" and "Love Frenzy" along with  many other "Hearts for the Arts" are up for bid until February 5th. This is the last completed work that is currently being featured at Hawthorn's Gallery this December,  a set of three panels titled "Tonality".  To see the other two simply scroll down. Originally it was to be just this one painting.  I then liked the contrast created by the second painting next to the first, but it seemed to need a third panel for closure. ..... and so then there was Tonality I, II & III. Unfortunately, I don't feel the photo does this work justice.  My favorite part is the right bottom corner with all the reds.  In real it looks really rich with so many variations but the photo blends them together.

Anyway.... I've been showcasing a few of the pieces this week that will be in this show.... which opens tonight!!!... with this being my second solo show at Hawthorn's I thought this would be an appropriate piece to showcase today.... Second Act.
