Some might wonder why many of my images are not signed.  Well, here is the reason....seeing the photographed image helps me determine whether a painting is completed.  Or, in rotating the image I find I like the painting better in another position than I painted it and then have to go back and change the initials. So, I have just decided to not sign them until I know, know for sure.  But then now and again, there will be the painting that I feel is complete with no more changes and rather than re-photograph.... I'll use that first image. Call me lazy, I guess.  They are each initialed MEC on the front, signed, titled and dated on the back before being packaged and shipped to their new home.

Painting titles are often times the most difficult part for me to decide on when completing a work.  My husband is the one who works with me on this.  He will ask me something like what was I thinking  or what does this painting remind you of in order to gather some of my insights.  Out of my responses, which can be rather lengthy, he will pick out one word....and there it is the perfect title. I am always so impressed because I could  be working for days just coming up with a simple title.   

But....this title "New Song" is mine.  Creative blocks happen for a lot of different reasons, so I've heard.  Lately, I've been there.  It kinda feels like you've lost your ability to create.  One theory I've heard that it is a normal process needed in order to proceed to another level.  Another one is that creativity needs time to rest.  I've had these before and so I've learned to slow down and wait.  Just don't stop or give up.  

This time....I just decided I wanted to have fun!! and play!!  With this painting I believe I've learned that it's all to easy to become too serious and lose the joy in painting.  The title came to my mind as I thought about how God's mercies are new each day and how he puts a new song or a fresh look in our hearts.

The Moment

Acrylic Palette Knife Painting

As I was painting , I was thinking about what a beautiful blue the sky had been that afternoon, after a storm had came through and all the tops of the trees contrasting against the blue. This small abstract painting is a moment captured in time. It's also made me think about how we so often allow our thoughts to dwell on the past or are pushing ahead and worrying about the future, rather than just being thankful for and living in the day. We have a friend who at one time was homeless and has had to learn to survive from day to day. His favorite phrase he uses a lot is "live in the moment". Enjoy the day!

Bring on the color!! I was just looking at the sky here today and thinking what a beautiful blue it was and all the shades of green from the trees up against it. Anyway, that has nothing to do with this piece, but color is everywhere and I love it. Take some time each day to pay attention and be thankful for all the color that surrounds us each day.

Color Frenzy was painted with lots of layers of thick acrylic paint on 140lb. paper. It is not framed but it can be framed to a standard 11" x 14" frame or custom framed. ....does it speak?

I knew I wanted this painting to have two canvases and so I worked on both of them at the same time, back and forth. There was a few times that I felt like they were good, but it wasn't until I was willing to take a risk that the strongest design emerged. This time as I was working I was mostly thinking about the design of the piece and not attaching any meaning to it. That is what is so interesting about them....

I love hearing the interpretations that others will have about the abstracts. But, many times that won't happen unless I first make a choice to not explain my take. Henri Matisse is known for having said, "An artist ought to have their tongue cut off and allow the work to speak for itself." No, I am not going to cut my tongue off, but your interpretation is as real as mine.

These two canvases were finished and I had them setting side by side against the wall, when a friend of ours came over. He proceeded to tell us what he saw and it could be seen even better when they were stacked as they've been posted. It was his story that brought meaning to me for this piece. It was then that my husband titled them Hidden, hiding the interpretation from the viewer. Now you may see your own!

Abstract Expressionism

Well, it's almost been a year since I began this journey of following what I believe to be my calling. It was a giant leap of faith to leave a well paying job and move on. I've learned more than I ever expected. There is a lot more to art and the business of art than meets the eye. More on this I sure as I approach my one year anniversary.

Lately, I've been faced with making decisions which basically have left me once again, to believe and rely on that which I can not see. This first year has brought me to a point of knowing and building my confidence as an artist. I am now ready. I had absolutely no idea of where to even start one year ago. I just began with what I did now, believed and it all began evolving from there.

This recent painting reminds me of a calm, peaceful, serene and inviting environment. A place to enter and be at rest. Lately, I've been thinking a lot about the hard work and discipline required of an artist in order to make a living in this business. (doubly so in this economy) I believe this is all in preparation for what will be needed and required of me. Recent decisions and occurrences have brought me peace in what I am doing, yet I am still finding myself counting the cost before I enter.

I kind of hate to comment on what I see in the abstracts, because I feel like it can take away from what others see. I even think titles can sometimes take away as well.
