Tis the season to work on small paintings.  I have found myself to be caught up in business lately or maybe it's just plain procrastinating. However way, I find working on small paintings to be manageable as I step in and out of the studio.  I've yet to post and list the completed ones. Today, I spent the morning underpainting and prepping small canvases. My small painting inventory was REALLY needing new additions.   They are being added to my Etsy store .

For everything there is a season, and a time for every purpose under heaven ... a time to dance.

Modern Expressionistic Abstract Painting "Summit" by Elizabeth Chapman

Summit
Acrylic on 22" x 28" canvas

ORIGINAL 2015

Available

To purchase this piece link to any of the stores on my side bar to the left...or contact me: elizabethchapman@artlover.com

I would be more than happy to help you!

This piece was begun while painting with a couple of friends. It began as a palette knife painting in my usual "have no idea where I'm going with this" mode.  I brought it home just not totally satisfied with it all...kinda going through that ugly stage. I softened up the edges creating the perfect effect both in color and texture. Love it now!!

Petite Landscape Abstract Painting "Vista" by Elizabeth Chapman

Available from my Etsy store: HERE

or

"Vista" may also be purchased from my website: HERE

Presently working on a large 30" x 40" canvas painting inspired by my recent trip to the Sunshine State, Florida! As I'm working on resolving it, taking a break to post this small abstract.  Thinking on how these little ones can take as long or longer to paint than a large abstract.  Someone recently made the comment to me that it's not about the size but about concept. Had to think on that one for a while. I believe there's a lot of truth there. Each painting is unique and has to be brought to that place where it feels right. I have often found that reproducing one of  my own paintings is really not that hard for me. The struggle that was once there in bringing it all together has already been done.  I know what colors I mixed, layers, textures, even music that I played to create that piece and can pretty much paint it again. Easy enough. It's not about size but in being true to each paintings direction.  As I'm looking at "Vista" I can see brushstrokes that begun the painting, and later worked over with a palette knife.

Abstract Heart Painting "Pash" by Elizabeth Chapman

Pash
Acrylic on 8" x 8" canvas
Original

Before

Another small heart for the "heart series, Pash was begun as another painting.  It sat around for a few weeks (bottom image) at which point I decided to take it in the direction of a heart abstract.  The paint on the surface became thick as I worked it with a palette knife.

More love!

Palette Knife Abstract

Summer Splay
Acrylic on 48" x 48" x 1.5" wrap canvas
Commission-sold

My pick for the day is "Summer Splay" which was a  2013 commissioned work to be painted similar to the original posted: HERE.  "Indian Summer" (2009) would later become the inspiration for my first commission to a couple here in Springfield, Mo., titled "Better Two", then Little Summer , New Dawn and  lastly Summer Splay.

Unique to these paintings is that they were painted entirely with a palette knife.  I am encouraged in reading the original post from Indian Summer back in 2009.  This had not been a good day for me.  The previous year 2008 I had resigned a well paying job as a high school art teacher to begin my own business. My paintings had not begun selling and I was frightened.  So, I had picked up a part-time job as a florist in a local grocery store to at least supplement our income in paying for my health insurance.  My creativity in floral arrangement had not been appreciated as I was criticized for using too much white with color..can't do that.  Frustrated, I came home and painted "Indian Summer" slashing whites into it with a palette knife. My stubborn streak was saying I'll show you that it can work. I did leave that job after a few weeks and shortly after, that painting became the color palette for the commissioned painting Better Two. God provides.

I have learned over the years that painting is a lot like having a "real" job….you've got to show up and clock in each day.  You can't just sit around and wait for that "magical feeling" to begin.  No matter how your feeling or whatever else is going on in your life you've got to go to work.  Often times, this can be the hardest part. But hey, don't be too hard on yourself either, there are also sick days and vacations!

I've been experimenting with some new techniques and have several new paintings that I will be posting soon….
for 2014!

whatever will be will be

Poco
Palette knife acrylic on 8" x 8" heavy watercolor paper
Ready to frame

Feeling as if it was time to work on adding a few more paintings to the "heart abstracts" category of my web gallery, I set out to paint hearts.  That is what these last two "Poco" and "Pana" (scroll down one) were meant to be.   Also, I worked on both of them simultaneously which tends to help freshen my perspective.  The flow for creating hearts just wasn't happening, so why fight it.  I'll try another day!

This small abstract along with a complete portfolio of my work can be seen on my web gallery: HERE

She is four now and I am looking forward to the day we can paint together. This is a painting from 2012 and is one of my favorites.  Lots of surface texture created with thick paint, a palette knife...and COLOR!!

reflections of fall

Praxis
Acrylic on 30"H x 40"W x 1.5" wrap canvas

SOLD

I absolutely love watching the colors of the trees change this time of year.  Just so sad that they don't last very long.  They have definitely rubbed off on me with a color palette change.  Working on several other paintings that reflect this feeling of fall as well.   What's next....oh no, please.. not winter.

Commissioned Palette Knife Painting, "Summer Splay" by Elizabeth Chapman

'Summer Splay'
Acrylic on 48" x 48" x 1.5" wrap canvas
Commissioned Painting

Mixing and Merging...... of color  begins on the canvas itself.  I love painting these that I refer to  as my palette knife paintings.  There is no pre-mixing of color and planning as it all occurs on the canvas itself.  It's beautiful watching the colors that are created as they mix and merge into each other.  Now with that said, I must say that there was a plan to this one as it was a commissioned painting in which the request was that it look like a previous painting of mine 'Indian Summer',( post from 2009 on what to do when discouraged)  only much larger.  So, I did lay out a basic sketch of the composition and color scheme on the canvas beforehand.  However, that very first painting was created in the summer time with a hint of fall in the air without any preconceived ideas, working intuitively with one color leading to the next.

With each new painting there is something to be learned.  To be honest re-creating from a previous painting of mine takes some of the excitement, anticipation and inspiration away as I pretty much know what the outcome will be.  For my inspiration, (besides the fact of being paid) my thoughts were centered around this family and the enjoyment they were going to receive, how it would speak to each member of the family, what it would mean to them, etc.,,  There were many problems with obtaining a good image of this painting because of the reds in it.  Red is always difficult to photograph. This time it seemed much worse as we tried many, many, many different times of the day.   The reds where all blurred into one and not showing the various value tones. Having a good representation was so very important as they needed to see it as close to possible to the real painting in order to approve the work. This time I just decided to google problems with photographing red....and found to my delight, my answer.  Various camera models will photograph reds differently. Duh.  I have been using a new camera that I purchased in order to have higher resolutions pic.  Switching off to my old camera solved the mystery.  Guess what I will be using to photograph paintings with a lot of red in them from now on?!

This image of "Summer Splay" was seen and approved (LOVED) by the new owners of the new painting.  However, they have not seen it in real, yet! as it is presently on it's way.

Awaiting in anticipation their response of the real work!!

Year End Special, ORIGINAL Palette Knife Abstract Painting, "Fancy Flight" by Elizabeth Chapman

'Fancy Flight'
Acrylic on 24" x 30" x 1.5" wrap canvas, just SOLD.

To purchase email me: elizabethchapman@artlover.com

A Celebration.... of the arts.  This painting was part of a live demonstration which I was asked to participate in two years ago as a celebration of the arts at the airport.  As an orchestra played in the background, I painted with a palette knife to the feel of the music.  I was not all that sure about painting in front of people watching me, but with the music playing I became focused on the orchestrating of color.  This is another painting that I have placed in my Year End Specials.

Floret, Contemporary Floral Abstract Painting, ORIGINAL by Elizabeth Chapman

'Floret'

Contemporary Abstract Palette Knife Painting

24" x 30" x 1.5" canvas

ORIGINAL

SOLD

When I first began painting professionally I worried about my not sticking with one particular style.  I painted realistically with transparent watercolor in a classically style and then would also waiver toward the more abstract.  There was also various subject matters and the florals were a part of that.  I thought I needed to make a decision as to what kind of an artist I would be known for...abstract, realistic, watercolorist, florals, hearts, etc.   Well...I've loosened up ALOT since then....and also was encouraged  to have found many other versatile artists.  I have found that there are times when it is refreshing to be able to change  and work in a different genre, media, subject matter, etc.

"Floret" is another painting from this break that I have taken from the abstracts.  It was also painted with a palette knife in a gesturally style with the desire to capture more of a feeling of this Peony still life than a realistic representation.
