Preliminary Sketch


I was contacted recently for a commissioned painting to be painted very similar to a popular floral that I did back in 2009, titled Mountain Flower which was a set of two paintings of the Columbine flower. The second painting of that set can be seen, here.  The large flower a vertical and the smaller florals were the horizontal canvas. And so, I began by first doing a preliminary sketch from images that I have of those original paintings, just to get an idea of the layout and a feel for it again.

As I was doing this I came up with another idea...

Why not have the large flower as a horizontal and the smaller flowers as a vertical?  I was working with a different photograph than I had used with the first set and felt this was the flow for this set.  I needed to consult with Shawna this new idea before proceeding...I did and she love it!  So, we now had the size of the canvases and the design.  Shawna,  loved the original colors but had a preference for more turquoise, pink and black to be in her set.   Now it was time to paint....

I first drew the flowers and then did a quick wash with the acrylics to determine the placement of light, medium and dark values.  This would help me when I got into color to remember to keep my values in mind.  This floral was taken from the upper right part of the photo I was working with.  It is one of the flowers from the vertical painting.

This is the vertical determination of light, medium and dark values.   Once this was decided on, I began working with the large floral first and color, keeping in mind Shawna's color preferences. It was all done with a palette knife greatly exaggerating and abstracting the color.  I finished it in one session, which is my favorite way to work with acrylics as the more paint that is mixed in, the slower the drying time and the more blending that can be done.

Then it was time to do the second painting.....

With this painting I decided on a little bit different of an approach.  I had at first been attracted to the many verticals with the photograph that I was working with, so I  painted the negative space first.  Constrained by time on this day, I was not able to finish this painting in one session.  No worries, the next day I went back in and added some of the greens around the edges giving me some wet paint to blend edges.   Along the way, I worked with edges of the canvas so that this set has the painting wrapping around the edge.

 I sent images to Shawna as I worked....with the final image being the set.   She LOVED them!  Yea!!  These will be delivered to her and in their new home next Friday!

I painted this on the day that our first grand daughter Penelope Bloom was born.  It was a very exciting morning as we were all there to welcome her in.  I later came home that afternoon and this painting was the result of all those spilled out emotions.  She is now 3 1/2 months old and most beautiful!!!

This painting has been speaking to me lately about new beginnings just as in the birth of a baby,  the celebrating of a birthday or even in the beginning of each day.  Last night we all came together to celebrate my father-in-law, great grandpa "Jackie's" 82nd birhthday.    A new beginning.....

This painting began as a realistic floral watercolor painting. (my realistic florals can be seen by clicking here)
After having already previously painted a realistic, I became a bit bored and wandered off into the abstract realm.  Later, I came back in with a more gesturally feel to the realistic image of the floral photo I was working with. All this happened without my giving it much thought, just following my instincts.  Mixed media materials include watercolor, gouache and acrylic paint.  A fun piece!!

I am so excited to be back painting on the large canvases. As I was working on this one it reminded me of another painting of mine titled Vibrant that recently sold. Not only is there a merging of the abstract and representational here, but a merging of techniques. I used Golden acrylics in this one with more of a watercolor approach to it. The colors are vibrant and vivid!!

A recent painting of mine working with a floral. I enjoy painting in this style so very much. It's the merging of the realistic and abstract sides of me. The difficult part is that when I work with a recognizable object I have a tendency to revert way back over to the realistic side. With this painting I worked back and forth between the floral image and the background keeping myself thinking more about shapes, colors, textures and more abstractly. Lots of thick acrylic paint!

Abundance

 When I came across these flowers I knew it was going to have to be a painting.  I absolutely loved the abundance of bright colors. The violets against the turquoise- total eye candy for me!  Once again,  working on a black canvas which seems to bring out the brilliance of the colors.

I finished this one up last week and am presently working on a large purely abstract - red, green, yellow and combo shades of- that has been presenting its challenges to me.  Will post as soon as it's done.  Wrapping it up and getting ready to take all these works to Hawthorn Galleries, Inc. Show time is coming up!

As I sat back and reflected this morning, I thought of this painting I worked on this last week and the abundance of color it has.  It reminded and made me think of how much we have here in America and how thankful I am. So, I sat down and wrote a list and here it is;  family, friends, the seasons- it's spring!, the rain- garden is growing, shelter and food, the gifts we've been given, sharing with others, joy, beauty that surrounds us, stuff we really don't need but yet have been given for our enjoyment, cheesecake, pugs and last but by no means least a heavenly Father who watches over us.  Perhaps you could do your own reflection and write a list today.
