Playful and fun!  See  the orange bird in the top right hand corner?!  I am often surprised to find things in a painting after it has been photographed.  That is when I saw this bird and imagined it flying across the blue side, maybe that is  a nest, trees, stepping stones, a window....just let your imagination soar.  What do you see?  A good conversation piece!!

there's nothing like family.....

'Sister Style'

Acrylic on 35"H x 60"W x 1.5" canvas

Commission
SOLD

THANK YOU!!  Ena

Finished!! and will be shipped to it's new home in Louisiana  this week!  This is a commission in which I was asked to do a painting similar to a previous one, "Spree" (now in Canada) only larger.   My prep work consisted of going back and remembering what I was thinking when I painted this, to hopefully catch that same mood and technique that I had used.  I pulled out only those jars of color that were used in Spree and selected the same music, Cat Stevens.  Then when all was ready, the work began....

What was I thinking as I was painting this one?....Well, that is how the title came to be...I thought about how closely this one was resembling the first one "Spree" (good since that was what was requested) and how closely they are related, much like sisters.  Which of course made me think of our two beautiful daughters, Elsie Larson and Emma Chapman, sisters, best friends and owners of Red Velvet. My thoughts of how similar they have always been and yet how different as well...

Here they are in a new feature they have added to their blog..."Sister Style"

As I was cleaning out my closet this weekend, I found these moccasins of the girls when they were three and five years old.

Thanks  for the inspiration that you have given to this new painting "Sister Style"...

Love you both so much!!
XOXO MOM

Faith, Contemporary Abstract Painting by Elizabeth Chapman

'Faith'
Acrylic on 24" x 30" x 1.5"

for purchasing info. Email me:
elizabethchapman@artlover.com

As I was painting this abstract I was thinking about how it is so important for ME to BELIEVE in the art making process and that there will be a beautiful painting.  It is so easy to get wrapped up in thoughts that come from the world, rather than allowing myself to be totally engulfed in child like faith.  The result here was a bright and colorful abstract with a child like feeling, playing and having fun.

what can I say...

'Pool Side One'

Gouache on 8" x 11" 140lb. watercolor paper

Sold

I've been playing lately with gouache paints which are a lot like watercolors only opaque.  The first time that I painted with them they reminded of my experience with having worked with oils in college.  Must be something about the way they can be moved around and their opaqueness.  This painting was working from a photograph of my mother and her sister sitting by the pool side.  A vintage picture in which my intent was for it to be a loose colorful figurative abstract....and it was but then something happened and it got really loose!!  (sorry mom)  But, I LOVE it!!! I'm not able to explain what it is that I am enjoying about it.  So, what can I can say....

Any ideas for a title??

Thanks Carol!! Read comment to see how this one was titled.

what's your vibrational plane.....

'Resonate'
Acrylic on 24" x 48" x 1.5" canvas

SOLD

Layers, layers and more layers would describe the approach that I took with this painting.  I worked on it everyday last week gradually building up the layers creating depth and richness of color.  I also played around much more with detailing, using found objects in the studio for printing shapes. It has not been signed yet, as so many of my online images are left, because many times I decide a painting isn't finished until after I see the image of it.  In this case, it is finished...... and will now be signed and sealed.

In it's beginning stage....

I have a commission that I will be working on this week and am expecting the canvas to arrive for it any day.  This will be a painting that will be displayed over a fireplace and had specific measurements, (35" x 60") so a special order canvas is being made.  In the meantime, I have been pondering my approach to it as it will be much like a previous painting "Spree". (which just recently went to Canada)
When I am working on a commission in which I am given a specific painting, colors, preferences, etc there is a lot of visual thinking that I do before ever approaching the canvas taking into consideration all that I have been given.  I watched a documentary in which Jackson Pollack spent months sitting in a corner just looking at a huge blank  canvas before painting it in a day. All of this preparation and thinking is counted as part of the painting time which is very necessary for a successful commission.

So, if you are looking for a higher plane of vibration for your space,  contact me!

"Montage"
Mixed Media on 11" x 16" 140lb. watercolor paper
Ready to frame

Today's painting evolved from a watercolor painting  to layering with gouache and then acrylic to it's finale charcoal gesturally lines.   Along the way there was some playing with new tools scraping through and creating intriguing lines and textures.

hardest job you'll ever love....

'Fresh Bouquet'
Acrylic 16" x 20" x 3/4" canvas

SOLD

Being a mother and raising kids is the hardest job you'll ever have, but will always be remembered as the one you loved the most.   We had three kids that were each approximately three years apart,  Elsie, Emma and Doren.  These children were the greatest gifts a mother could have ever received and I am very thankful for them.   .....and now we are so blessed to have a most precious grand-daughter!

Last week she spent three days with us....she has quite the imagination and we have so much fun playing....it's not always easy, but YES, it is another hardest job you'll ever love!

 "let MiMa take your picture"

"There you are!"

Happy Mother's Day!

with much love...Elizabeth

Floret, Contemporary Floral Abstract Painting, ORIGINAL by Elizabeth Chapman

'Floret'

Contemporary Abstract Palette Knife Painting

24" x 30" x 1.5" canvas

ORIGINAL

SOLD

When I first began painting professionally I worried about my not sticking with one particular style.  I painted realistically with transparent watercolor in a classically style and then would also waiver toward the more abstract.  There was also various subject matters and the florals were a part of that.  I thought I needed to make a decision as to what kind of an artist I would be known for...abstract, realistic, watercolorist, florals, hearts, etc.   Well...I've loosened up ALOT since then....and also was encouraged  to have found many other versatile artists.  I have found that there are times when it is refreshing to be able to change  and work in a different genre, media, subject matter, etc.

"Floret" is another painting from this break that I have taken from the abstracts.  It was also painted with a palette knife in a gesturally style with the desire to capture more of a feeling of this Peony still life than a realistic representation.

Spring Bouquet, May Day Contemporary Floral Abstract Painting by Elizabeth Chapman

"Spring Bouquet"
Acrylic on 20" x 24" x 1.5"

click on image for close up

To purchase by check or paypal contact me: elizabethchapman@artlover.com

"May Day"... May 1st is a day to celebrate the Spring season and what better way to begin the festivities than with flowers.  This floral abstract was inspired and painted from a bouquet of Peonies that I set up in a blue vase in my studio, my favorite way to paint the florals. "Spring Bouquet" was entirely painted with a palette knife in a gesturally style capturing the life of these gorgeous spring flowers.  (click on image to see a close up of this knife work)
