The latest figurative painting completed recently as a commission for my water aerobics instructor, Margaret. Having gone through my website, she fell in love with a painting that I had done years ago of my daughter, Emma.  It reminded her of her own daughter, Tamara. I knew she wanted it to be similar, but at the same time I wanted this painting to have a life of it's own. So, I also worked with the original photograph of Emma and the bike. She also asked if I couldn't perhaps make the skin color just a little darker. As I was painting, I realized that I had never mixed color for black skin. Had to google it! Why had I never done this before? I loved the richness of the colors. There wasn't much skin to cover with this painting but I mixed SO much paint just enjoying the learning process. Thank you, Margaret! Hope your enjoying "Bicycle Girl" up there on your mantel!!

Figurative Abstract Painting "Venture" by Elizabeth Chapman

Venture
Acrylic on 12" x 12" canvas

Commission (sold)

ORIGINAL 2016

One more. I think. This is the last one just completed from a series I've done over the last month. Scroll down to see the others. There's a lot of paint on those mountains! They weren't easy. I really kinda hate that I'm done with these, as I was developing a rhythm.  Beginning with a sketch, then going to the background and back into the figures. For the next session, I begin with the figures going into the background. Lastly, I work back and forth merging, working with soft/hard edges. Somewhere there towards the end I push myself to work with out the photograph as I'm needing to remember that this is a figurative abstract  and not a realistic painting.

This is the first one in a pair that I did for Katy and her son. Scroll down to see the second one of Katy's mother and her son.  These were a couple of very special pieces as I felt I got to know this family as I painted them. Always, such an honor to be asked to paint a figurative abstract.

I was contacted through my Etsy shop and asked if I wouldn't consider painting a figurative abstract. It was from a very special time in which these siblings had been re-united while visiting a brother who was recovering from injuries while having been deployed.  I was puzzled as Etsy was not the place that I had done these, so...how did she know about them?  Later, she told me she had seen them on Instagram and had really like them. Would I do one for her?  Immediately, upon seeing the photograph ideas began to formulate. So, how could I not?  Although, these always do make me a bit nervous to paint I will.  Maybe it's because I don't want to offend anyone by the way I have abstracted them and because I know how special the photograph means to them. It's really more about capturing a feeling for the painting than a realistic representation.

I don't do these often enough and should as they've been well received. I have decided to begin a listing for them in my Etsy shop. It won't be on there for a few more weeks, so in the mean time if your reading and think you might be interested contact me: elizabethchapmanart@gmail.com

I'm getting ahead of myself painting and behind with posting.  Here is the second pool side painting in this new series from a vintage photo of my mom, dad and grandmother in 1962.  It all started when I posted the first one, not sure of a title, I asked for suggestions.  Carol Engles suggested the pool side series and title them one, two, three, etc...,  The first one has sold and on it's way to Jacksonville, Florida to be added to a collection.  I am excited about these and will continue on with them.  If anyone has any photos you would like to send my way?!

Last night was Friday night art walk....and we  did a last minute hang job at a salon/spa where my daughter-in-law Sarah works, Blue Skies Hair Art Studio, next to the Randy Bacon Studio.  I also have  large abstract paintings hanging at the Springfield/Branson Sky Gallery (airport), John Q. Hammons University Plaza Hotel and the Springfield Arts Council member's show.

With all these large ones out, I am feeling like it's time to work on another one, perhaps layers and with reds, could it be a fall prelude....we'll see were that goes~

what can I say...

'Pool Side One'

Gouache on 8" x 11" 140lb. watercolor paper

Sold

I've been playing lately with gouache paints which are a lot like watercolors only opaque.  The first time that I painted with them they reminded of my experience with having worked with oils in college.  Must be something about the way they can be moved around and their opaqueness.  This painting was working from a photograph of my mother and her sister sitting by the pool side.  A vintage picture in which my intent was for it to be a loose colorful figurative abstract....and it was but then something happened and it got really loose!!  (sorry mom)  But, I LOVE it!!! I'm not able to explain what it is that I am enjoying about it.  So, what can I can say....

Any ideas for a title??

Thanks Carol!! Read comment to see how this one was titled.

a Father's love....

Tai Yau

Figurative Abstract
Acrylic on 24"x 18" (1.5) canvas

Sold

For commissions contact: Elizabeth

This was recently completed as a commissioned piece by a man who would like to have an artist's interpretation done of family photos to collect and hang in his home. The photograph of his father was taken in Kansas City in May of 1956. Yes, that is right-May!! Ten inches of snow fell overnight and was pretty much mush by the next day. If you happen to live in the Springfield area you may have known this man or at least eaten at his restaurant. The man's name was Tai Yau, (pronounced Tie Yow) an Oriental Hawaian, and the name of his restaurant was Johnny Loo's Steakhouse.

His son Greg gave me a small black and white photograph to work from and pretty much just told me he wanted me to paint it as I liked. I started with the figure in a looser realistic manner, because I wanted the resemblance of his father to be there. The back ground was worked in layers and in a much more abstract manner with cooler colors being used to emphasize the cold weather. Greg has also told us how much his mother and father liked red and gold. In fact, he remembers every house he ever lived in growing up as having red carpet. So, knowing this I used touches of these colors for Tai's clothes and to contrast against the cooler background.

As I painted, I thought about the remarkable resemblance between this father and his son. Also, I thought about how much love this father would later have for a son that was not yet born when this photo was taken. A photograph of a man shoveling snow, known as a hard worker, Tai Yau would work for the rest of his entire life for his family. A picture of a loving Father, sacrificing for his family. In return he has a son that loves him so much that his wish is to bring him honor and glory. Thank you Greg!!! Hope you like it!
