Discipline.... is what I am currently working on.  Not that I don't have any, it just seems like it's become more and more random. Working for yourself is wonderful in that it gives you the opportunity to be flexible.  If you don't get work done in the morning, well there is always the evening and if there are other things that need to be done..then isn't that what weekends are for.  Sounds good..huh...except that there are only so many hours to a day and days to a week...and if you get to spending more time on the other stuff then the artist's work isn't going to get done.  I am not real good at setting goals either...it'll all work out is my motto!  My daughters,  Elsie and Emma are forever setting goals and living by them and it seems to work well as they run a business and a successful blog that requires most all their time. You can read more about them on A Beautiful Mess.  Lately, I have had to make some decisions to cut a few things out of my schedule and although they were very difficult for me to make, I believe it's a step in spending more time in the studio painting.  And yes girls, if your reading this...I am setting goals!

Versatility.... I have a tendency to get bored easily, so change I must...or as my hubby says,"must you change ".  With painting I have various categories that I work with...large abstracts, small abstract, mini abstracts, mini mini's, floral, hearts and some figurative.  Within the abstracts there are the more expressionistic movement paintings and then the more thought out and pondered ones.  One thing they all have in common is color!  In the beginning there were the realistic transparent floral watercolors alongside the abstracts that I would do.  I often thought that maybe I should pick one and stick with it...my own signature style. Perhaps, maybe, one day. Oh, and then there are different mediums!  I love working with watercolors, gouache, mixed media and would someday like to work with oils.  The plus side of all this...is that it does offer more variety to a broader clientale and keeps the fun in it for me.

Reflections....  One thing I do now know for sure is that the bottom line as an artist is that you  have got to keep producing.  Lately, I've been reflecting back on the very beginning of this new chosen career of mine which begun five years ago and can actually laugh at myself, as I began without any technical knowledge or inventory.  One thing I knew, for my part it was going to take a lot of hard work and belief in what I was doing.  I spent my first summer....literally working from 8-5 , just as if it was a regular job.  The first half of my day was spent painting realistic florals and the other half of the day was spent learning the beginnings of how to market a product, working a digital camera,  transferring images online, starting a blog, sites to list on, how to list, pricing etc.,  How much did I make that first year for all my effort?!..well let's just LOL together!

Marketing..... after having resigned my job and beginning this new career, the hardest thing that I had to begin to learn was marketing.  As most artists, we would much rather be in the realm of creating than that of business.  Much has been learned in the past five years and I can now say that I do enjoy it!  I have been fortunate to have had a husband who was raised working in a business and has taught me.  Creating and marketing are two very different worlds yet it takes both working together in order to sustain a small business.  It has occurred to me that over the years as I have posted, that often I have written about the artistic side but never have I posted about selling the work.     I would like to post tidbits... so we'll see!

ORIGINAL Abstract Painting by Elizabeth Chapman "Thirds"....sold and on it's way to new home!

Thirds
Acrylic on 30" x 40" x 1.5" gallery wrap canvas

SOLD

SO, very thankful!....  I truly am so very thankful that for this last year my sales have consistently been on the increase.  I love creating and painting in particular, but I also love that because of my business I am able to stay here taking care of home and family.  This week we've been adjusting to our Son beginning a new semester, that will all but six hours complete his degree in Graphics Design.  So, what is there to adjust to... well....in taking care of his daughter, our grand daughter Penelope.  I was a stay at home Mom until Doren, the youngest of our three enter Kindergarten.  I then taught art in a public school for ten plus years, before resigning to pursue this...what I do now!  ....and I love it!!

Again, thanks to each of you have purchased and expressed an interest in my abstracts.

Blessings....Elizabeth

I have been working on the large canvases for about a month now, which seems to be the way that I operate.  When visiting my website you will find large, small. mini, mini mini, floral, figurative and heart abstracts.  I'll get on a track with a category and be on it for a while before making a switch to another size. Anyway, it was time to work on the large canvases...this one was painted on a winter day with the feel and colors that a snow day reflect.  How about a cup of hot chocolate?!

This is a very large painting, at least for me it is anyway, as it's 5ft. wide and because I work in a small studio space this size has to stay on the wall.  Ordinarily, I begin a work on an easel, but at some point it will end up on a table nearby where I am able to easily turn it in order to work it from different angles.  This is were GiGi, my pug, will exit the studio.... as she is scared of the sound of the spinning canvas.

The Blues.... and listening to Chopin while painting resulted in this painting.  Just love it when the music almost seems to be directing the painting.  The chosen color palette to work with on this particular day was blue and white.   When the spirit moves....paint!

Intuitive.... I can't find the words to describe the feeling when working like this except maybe free and trusting.  There is such a wonderful freedom in trusting your own intuitive knowledge...moving through quickly responding to each new mark, shape, color, etc..,  I was challenging myself to working without color in just black and white.  With that plan I began ....the music was on, the brushes danced across the canvas and....then oops color.

Also,  have been working with this new size canvas.  The standard 24" x 48" x 1.5" is what I have previously been using.  I got to where I was feeling as if I wanted a little more height to the 48" width.  So, I've had these 30" x 48" canvases custom made  and have found that I LOVE this new found size.
