Orchestrate... Modern Contemporary Abstract Painting by Missouri Artist Elizabeth Chapman

A mixture of working with the  earth tone palette and a splash of color!  This one has a lot of subtle details that made it exciting to work with.  These can be seen by clicking on the image to get a larger, close up view.  I worked on this one over a period of many days, layering, staring at it, then adding more layers or lines, staring, adding.... Felt it was done, photographed it and posted it to my web gallery.  Then I found that the bottom left hand corner kept bothering me every time I looked at it,  sooo... went back in and added a few more layers and lines in order to feel a good balance and.... here it is.. Orchestrated for you!!

Fancy Flight... Modern Contemporary Original Abstract Expressionism Painting by Missouri Artist Elizabeth Chapman

Fancy Flight
Acrylic on 24" x 30" x 1.5" gallery canvas
Palette Knife Painting
Available

This is the painting I painted last Thursday night live at the Springfield/Branson airport for a benefit.  You can scroll down a few posts to see me busy at work at my easel.  I chose to work with a palette knife for this event because I knew it would be much easier to wipe my knife off than to deal with changing out water for brushes.  There were other fine arts there performing as well.  I began with a blank canvas that had been undercoated with a terra cotta gesso and no other idea.  The painting is a response or expression capturing the feeling or mood to the evenings Flight of Fancy event.

"Inner Beauty".... Modern Contemporary Original Floral Abstract Painting by Missouri Artist Elizabeth Chapman

'Inner Beauty'

SOLD

Acrylic on 8" x 10" canvas
Available for purchase

Such a perfect morning.... I woke up to a cool breeze coming through an open window and the birds were chirping and singing so loudly and happily.  It was such a pleasant awakening and a gentle reminder of God's creation.  Later in the morning we sung the song, "This Is My Father's World"... and  it reminded me of Emma and how as a child, the creation songs where among her favorites.  She was the one that would pick the neighbor's flower through the fence without a thought as to who they belonged to.  Here she is gardening.  ...  and still gardening... city gardening in LA.  She's a vegan and loves shopping at the local Farmer's Market.  Her blog: From Scratch

This is my Father's world, And to my list'ning ears,
All nature sings, and round me rings
The music of the spheres.

Love you Emma!!!

Then God looked over all he had made, and he saw that it was very good!

Painting last night for a fund raiser at the Springfield/Branson airport.  It was good being out of the studio and sharing this part of a painting that is rarely seen by the public.  That is the process that an artist goes through in creating a painting from start to finish.  I enjoyed visiting with the many people and being a participant for the Springfield Arts Council.

Surmise: to imagine without conclusive evidence.  Isn't that what worry and fear are all about? I am the worst for that..... We have a bird house on our front porch that I have been observing from indoors over the weekend as it rained and rained and rained.. A mother Bluebird has been leaving her nest in this downpour in order to bring back food for her young.  Not only is she taking care of her young but she is also safe and watched over.  It struck me as I watched her how we are also watched over and are to live without worry and fear.

I am now back to painting the abstracts with acrylics after having taken a break with the floral abstracts and the mixed media. (these can be seen with the previous post) There are many layers of acrylic paint used in building up this painting, as well as having used a palette knife, brush and even a comb for texture.  There's a lot of contrasting between values, colors, shapes and textures. I especially like how the smaller colorful shapes are nestled in.... a nest?  What do you see?

Look at the birds.  They don't plant or harvest or store food in barns, for your heavenly Father feeds them. And aren't you far more valuable to him than they are?

"In the Sun"... Modern Contemporary Brightly Colored Original Mixed Media Abstract Painting by Elizabeth Chapman

In the Sun
Mixed Media on 9" x 12" 140lb. paper
Available from my web gallery
or contact: Elizabeth

I've always enjoyed painting with watercolors.  It began when I was in high school taking private lessons from an artist that lived in our town.  She taught me how to work transparently, building layers and either working from still lives she set up or photographs.  And so... I've mostly always worked realistically with the watercolors and have a tendency to revert back to realism when I get them out.   Lately,   though I've been transferring much of my abstract acrylic techniques to the watercolors, mixing gouache and acrylic in... and just having a lot of fun!!!

For the Lord God is our sun and our shield.

Lily Frenzy... Modern Contemporary Original Floral Impressionistic Abstract Painting Elizabeth Chapman

Lily Frenzy
Mixed Media on 9" x 12" 140lb. paper, $50.00
Available from Web Gallery

Now and then it's good to mix things up.  Last week I just got the urge to work abstractly with the watercolors... and so I have temporarily switched mediums. It actually turns out to be mixed media with the addition of gouache and acrylic.  I've been listening to this new music as I paint that I absolutely LOVE LOVE... if you have the time... listen.  Sleep at last....

May First Friday Night Art Walk..... "Frama" Modern Contemporary Expressionism Abstract Painting by Elizabeth Chapman

Frama
Acrylic on 24" x 48" x 1.5" gallery canvas
Available from Hawthorn Galleries

I absolutely love hearing how the abstract paintings speak to people in so many different ways.  The opening for the May show "Studio Madness" at Hawthorn Galleries begins with the First Friday of May.  I will be showing there along with two other very talented women this month.  I know I have already posted this one, but this time for the announcement of the opening I thought I would share the painting that I seem to be the most partial to and how it speaks to me.

I began this painting without any preconceived idea other than I wanted to keep the colors light.  I was working with the same color palette I had been using with the Quad and Myriad series.  There is a process here of layering colors allowing the painting to unfold it's expression.  I used various tools and methods in applying the paint such as brushstrokes, a roller and drips.  I finalized it with circle shapes in order to bring certain areas into a focal point.  So... as I am working I am also beginning to sense a feeling or mood developing from this painting.  One of my favorite if not favorite seasons of the year is summer time and that is what this painting began to remind me of.  There is this song that Donnie has been playing a lot lately... and think it fits the feeling that this painting gives me so very well.  Summertime.... this is Billy Holiday's version. Listen... if you have time.

I am so very thankful for the opportunities that have been given to me to share my art with others.

Give thanks to the Lord, for He is good!!

"Fresh"..... Modern Contemporary Watercolor Floral Abstract Impression by Elizabeth Chapman

Fresh
Mixed Media
Watercolor/Gouache/Acrylic on 140 lb. paper
$50.00

Sold, Thank you Bev!!!

This is my impression of a rose working from a photograph.  I began by wetting my paper down and drawing with the Martin's watercolor droppers and then switching to the regular watercolor paints.  I also used a roller and at some point a wide tooth comb that was laying close by for texturing.  The final layers were a bit of lime green acrylic and liquid black and white for the gesturally lines. (Click on painting for close up)  When I work from a photograph as in this painting I will begin somewhat realistically as in the drawing of it, but then will  put the photo away in order to go with the creative flow of the painting.

He has made everything beautiful in its time.
