I haven't posted in several weeks, but it isn't because I haven't been painting. This is one of three large 40" x 48" paintings that I have been working on for a local commission.  I was able to visit this home to get a feel for and given color swatches for ideas. It turned out to be a beautiful piece that fit perfectly into the room. I loved working on this and such a joy that it meant so much to the owner.  I have also been thinking a lot about wanting and actually needing to make some changes with my work.  Not a bad thing. It's actually inspiring to be thinking about these things. I've been feeling this for awhile but just not knowing exactly what I want to do. The ideas have been coming and I've have written many of them down in order to go back to them.  Two of the bigger goals (changes) are with my approach to painting and secondly with presentation.

I began in 2008 painting floral paintings with transparent watercolors that were very realistic.  Amazing to go back and look at these. They were the beginning of the process and this journey. At the time, I was only playing around with the abstracts.  In time the abstracts were more me and won out...and there I've been ever since.  I've learned SO MUCH about painting and selling as an independent artist. Presently, I've been feeling as if I need to artistically challenge myself more and move on for new growth. To do this I feel I need to concentrate more time with each painting(s), playing,exploring and bringing to completion a series.  So, this is what I'm going to be doing beginning this spring and through the summer.  I'll continue to work on other projects as they come along.

The second change is with my website, this blog and my approaches to selling. Presently, I have a large body of work available for sale on my website, Etsy store and with Zatista.  I will be working on a separate website from the one that I presently have with a blog. I will announce those changes on here so as to redirect.  

For now, my time spent on the internet when not painting will be to set up these new changes.  I will continue to show glimpses here, there and on instagram.

As happens every Spring we begin to see colors of new growth. yay!! It's very exciting when you live in an area that loses most all of it's color during the winter months. Flowers seem to represent the emergence of color again, the best. So, along with that we see more artist painting florals this time of year....and I'm one of them! Happens every year!

It is that time of year! yay!  Flowers are beginning to bloom and  who can not help but be inspired by the new growth and colors.  I knew when I saw the orchids that sit in our window beginning to bloom that a painting would come from them. This is it.  No, it doesn't really look like this, but it was what I used for the initial sketch on canvas. From there, the rest was made up. Imagine that.

Perhaps it's the cooler than normal August temperatures and the anticipation of the upcoming Fall that has inspired the warmer color palette here.  This one reminded of several past paintings, "Prelude" and later "New Growth" that I had to revisit and reminisce.  Siblings.

Bright and sunny.....  we ordered seed last night for this years garden, only 23 days to go till spring!  I'm posting the latest from my floral collection here.  My inspiration is coming from the anticipation of warmer weather, new growth and the fresh new colors that spring brings.  This one was painted last week during an ice storm that we were having in the midwest! Thankfully, our area was not affected by any power outages.  The storm of 2007 left us with no electricity and single digit temperatures for 11 days.  We now prepare as best we can for the worse, but always hoping for the best!

I usually like to leave the interpreting of my abstracts to the viewer, allowing a personal response.  This painting was completed in several more sessions than I ordinarily take.  In the first phase of it I saw a tree beginning to emerge and it was at this point that I felt it was completed.  Yet... the more I looked at it  I just wasn't totally satisfied.  It was at the point of needing to take a risk that would either make it or it would  become something else.  Either way... you've got to believe it will work and take the plunge.

That was when I went back into the painting with layering and before I knew it I was into the circles.

Life is always in a state of growing.  Sometimes there are stages of what seem like no growth, but those are needed into for the new growth to occur.  Being an artist is a lot like that as well.  It can be frustrating when you hit those times where it feels like nothing is happening.  I was there recently.  In fact, I felt like   I had lost my creativity and was finished with painting.  I am encouraged from what I hear from this painting.  It speaks to me about being patient, listening, abiding and believing that the Creator of creativity is always at work.  This creativity like a circle has no end.

 This one turned out to be a beautiful piece, although I wasn't sure I would be able to pull the idea off.  Lately, I've been working abstractly,loosely,expressionistically, yet incorporating that element of realism as well.  I've been enjoying the change in painting very much and feel as if growth is occurring.  This is the life of the painting that others can see, but there is another life and that is the process that is also a part of the paintings life.

There are so many ideas, problem solving and thoughts that go into a work.  I thought I would write about a few of those that stood out to me as I was working on this one. 

1. For everything there is a season, a time for every activity under heaven..... Ecclesiates 3:1-14

I seem to have a difficult time living in the present- there's a lot of what if's, or when, or will---

this can lead to discouragement-- which is were I go often, but He provides ways in which I can be once again encouraged- Yesterday, it was my husband, Donnie who as usual puts things in perspective for me.  He confirmed in me that this is a time to grow in who I am as an artist- to paint, to produce and the other stuff will be taken care of in it's time.  Because I resigned from a teaching position that was a good part of our income, I will often worry about finances.  His little pep talk helped me get up and go paint.  My husband also gave me this verse as I first began this new journey last summer- "Do not despise the small beginnings, for the Lord rejoices to see the work begin, to see the plumb line in Zerubbabel's hand.  Zechariah 4:10  This speaks to me about today.  Live in the present. 

2.  Another thought I had and this one seems to be more of a reoccurring one, but it always blows me away in the way a work can seem like it's not working, it's not going to, how can all these different pieces come together creating a unified piece- and then it happens.  There it is- a beautiful piece.  This reminds me of how the Master artist works, taking all these broken parts, what seem to be messed up lives, or whatever the case might be, and uses them in such a way to bring the greatest good out of it.

3.  Also, I thought of how other artists have been used along the way in order to either just get me started, to encourage and nurture my talent, or to give advice.  Whatever the case might have been God provides in order that growth may occur.

4. And lastly, how creating can be an act of worship.  We often think of this with music, but there are so many other areas as well.  The process of taking those talents that have been given to you and using them creates a joy, that offers praises and thanksgiving to the Creator.  So, creating can be a lot like singing a praise song, only it's not seen or heard by others.

These were just a few of the thoughts that went with this painting. Often time, there are thoughts of family, friends, others, and prayer that will occur.  I've often entertained the thought, that perhaps the process might actually be the better part.  But then, perhaps there is a process for those who view the work.  Michael Card in the book he wrote "Scribbling in the Sand" says that what Jesus did when he scribbled in the sand created a space in time that allowed the angry mob to cool down and then to hear a word. --- If what we create, write, dance or sing can open up such a space in time through which God may speak, imagine the possibilities!"

So it seems there is always more there than meets the eye- a second life-
