I so enjoyed working with the softer colors, neutrals and subtle texture variations.  Reminds me of the seasons changing here in the Ozarks.  The beautiful green colors of spring/summer have stayed with us this year due to a rainy summer.  Fall being in the air with hints of the richness of color that will come.  Then there is the bareness and restfulness of winter colors with it's neutral grays and whites.   Which is your favorite? or perhaps you enjoy all of them!  There are aspects of each season that I look forward  to and love.  It's wonderful to have the changes!

In the new studio painting this morning on the annual peonie floral painting.  Originally, I did not plan for this each year, but it seems to have now become a tradition.  The inspiration comes from a floral bush that we have in our background that blooms each Spring around the middle of May.  For the last six years I have brought in a bouquet of cut flowers and painted a floral abstract.  I was working this morning on this year's painting which reminded of the one I did last year, "Love Blooms" which was a full bouquet, now available from my Etsy shop: HERE.

SO rarely, but oh so sweet.  This one sold fresh off the easel and while the paint was literally still wet! I had just taken it off the easel to be photographed outside along with another painting.  Posted it on instragram, where it was seen by the buyer of "Highlight" , who then contacted me as a possible interest to her sister.  So, two of my paintings going to another pair of sisters! "Sisterlyties" was the last one. How is that for Sister Style? …loved this particular blog post written by my daughter's Elsie and Emma of A Beautiful Mess.  They also read my blog. And YES girls..I would prefer the blended version for the Coconut Toasted Margarita!  You'ld have to watch towards the end of this You Tube video to catch the question. Ok, so that was off the track.

No, I never drink while painting. I know it may look that way. Totally me. I can be deeply inspired by music. With this painting, I was listening to an instrumental artist named Yanni--If I Could Tell You-- that I found while reading the January issue of Visual Language Magazine.  Painting for me is much like an adventure, not really knowing where it will lead with each discovery leading to the next.  Purely intuitive.  This painting was so that way as I followed the flow enjoying the process of creating.  As I paint, my thoughts can be far removed from the actual painting process. Kinda like putting it on autopilot. In this case there was a lot of thankfulness and praise to God.

Loving it.  My abstracts are known for their color, movement and texture.  But shapes..not so much. This will change that! Don't you think?!   Kinda reminded me of a painting from 2011 titled "Mosaic".
Perhaps this one might be a reminder of child's play. No plans or expectations getting in the way, just pure adventure on the canvas.  Experimenting freely.

This little figurative abstract was created from a photo of a young couple and their twin sons.  Fanny and I worked together going through many photos narrowing it down to this favorite. They live in Spain, but were in Argentina visiting family on the boys' first birthday in this photo.

Orange was not a color that they had in their home and one that she was particularly fond of, so I steered away from it.  My objective when painting these are to capture a feeling of the moment more  than an realistic representation.  Together, close and happy!

oops…haven't posted in a bit.  Could it be Spring is on the way?!  With these early warm days I've been enjoying and working outside as much as possible.  Inside the house, there is nothing like more light to jump start the spring cleaning. Also, a good form of procrastinating studio time. Hey, at least the house is getting clean!  Today, it is raining and the 42 degree start is slowly dropping to the present 32 with talk of snow.  Fixing chicken and dumplings for lunch, tomato and grilled cheese sandwiches for supper, there's a pecan pie made and maybe hot chocolate some time today. Comfort foods to take the chill away.  Tomorrow it will be 17 degrees, then Tuesday will be back to 60 degrees. yep, it's the Ozarks!

I've heard it said that, "the first brushstroke can be the hardest" and so it was with this one.  It was begun with the background colors and left for many days as I went on with other stuff to do. Along the  way, the back of my mind was saying, "you've got work to do in the studio, need to get back" and so reluctantly I stepped back in one morning.  Sometimes the best time to paint, can be when you just don't feel like it, don't care or are bored as this can help make that shift to the right creative brain side much quicker.  I found myself not worrying about creating a wonderful work, one that is liked by others, will sell, etc., etc.,  but just….enjoying it!

I painted this one as a horizontal but when I turned it as I so often do with my paintings to find it's strongest side, I found that I liked it as a vertical too.  I could not, could not decide so decided to put it on Instagram/Facebook for a vote.  The comments were all interesting and it pretty much came out about half/half in favor of horizontal or vertical.  Here is the horizontal for you to decide:

So what do you think? As I favored the vertical,  I added the white drips making it more towards a vertical, but still works strongly as a horizontal.  Someone suggested that it would depend on the space that you were going to hang it.  Totally agree.  I've decided that this one is just as strong as a horizontal as it is a vertical and could be hung either way.  That is true for so many abstracts, but still I always like to pick it's strongest side for listing.  Not so with this one, as I will be promoting it both ways. Everyone wins.

The black and white painting "Limitless" that my daughter Emma asked that I do for her and Trey's home office has gotten the wheels turning on a black and white series.  This is the second one.  I have found these to be harder to paint than they appear.  It might  be since color comes so naturally for me that it feels as if I've got my hands tied when working with just black and white.  I would like to try one with color, then layer in the black and white with some color coming through.  The challenge is good. 

Here we are photographing outside using natural lighting.  With all the white in this painting this spot in the shade turned out to work the best.  Propped on top of a found object in order to keep the bottom edge from being in the sun.  Fancy photographing equipment. I then had to up the exposure in editing to get it to as close as possible to real thing, which is lighter than this.

This painting has been in the works for quite some time and recently went back to give it some tender loving care.  There was a lot that I liked, but had too much not working for the whole.  I resolved it by focusing more on defining it's high horizontal composition, still retaining it's original identity.  I love the texture that is built up when layers upon layers of paint are built up. Many times it is not done intentionally just happens as I am searching for the flow/direction of a painting. Yet works. Unfortunately, texture is not one of the elements that is visible on images.  SO much more to appreciate in real.


Well, I'm off to start a painting today with an abstracted landscape idea that came to me as we were on our way to eat with our kids last night.  I also think about food while painting…Sky,mountains, beach scene.  Warm yellow/oranges, purple/blues and off white. Another large, large…we'll see where it goes. Perhaps work on a figurative too.  Weather is finally warming up, so time to start getting some outside work done.  Hoping to clean the garden and plant peas this afternoon.  Then back to painting in the evening.  Enjoy your day.

This was a commissioned figurative abstract for Elise Blaha from the blog: 'enjoy it.'  She contacted me as she is friends and works with my daughters Elsie and Emma of  A Beautiful Mess, inquiring if I would be interested in creating this painting of her and Ellerie. How could I not?! Such an adorable picture of these two.  The photo that I used is in part of her blog banner or instagram @elisejoy if you would like to see it.

I know, I know I need to keep painting these figuratives...


I did not know Elise and so decided to check her blog out.  I left reading her blog inspirationally pumped and I'm not through reading it yet. There is so much. You couldn't possibly miss finding something you would enjoy reading. She has been blogging since 2005. I found this post on posting in the section: Blog Content which caught my eye for ideas.  loved it. Currently, she is starting a birthday challenge called make29 for her birthday this year.  I'm not quite sure how she finds the time for all that she does.  She certainly, is an inspiration.

My husband is so laughing at me, because one of my goals for this year was to phase out small abstracts.  Concentrating more on the large abstracts.  Well, here I went and joined the 30 paintings in 30 days challenged last month and to make it more manageable for myself, I painted a lot of small abstracts.  It was also a good time to try something new.  Figurative abstracts had been something that I had dabbled in a little with the "Pool Side Series", but after 4-5 paintings had dropped it.  So not exactly new, new…but was something I wanted to continue…

It has turned out to be a natural for me and really not to far from abstract expressionism.  It is really another emotional form of painting in which it is more about picking up the feeling or movement of the subject than creating a realistic depiction. Yet, there is just enough realism to connect with. This new style has turned out to be very well received  and I have been busy  painting several more since last month.  So, here I am painting more of the small abstracts!

This was a  special commission and one that is meant to be a gift to two sisters who share similar ties. I was contacted by their mother who was a regular follower of my daughters' Elsie and Emma's blog, A Beautiful Mess.  On their blog she had seen one of the paintings I had done for the January Challenge titled "Sisters". She fell in love with the painting as it was a reminder to her of her own daughters and 'sisters' with a unique bond. She asked if I would be willing to create a figurative abstract from a photograph that had appeared in a local magazine article of her daughters   ….and would I do 'two paintings' as they would be a gift to each sister.

The gift would  be given as a celebration for this years fifth anniversary.  The older sister is a recipient of a kidney donation from the younger sister.  Each year in May, there mother has given them a gift. It was all the information I was given. Since having completed the paintings I have been given more information and totally admire the courage that these sisters have had.  I've been told that "Sisterly Ties One" totally captures the personalities of these two daughters/sisters. 

Approaches to painting can vary, at least for me.  I wanted to keep the feeling consistent for each painting and so they were painted side by side back and forth.  They paintings are obviously alike in many ways  but yet there are elements from each one that I prefer and so in that respect I feel they turned out with a good balance of likeness.  What spoke the most for me was painting the area around there shoulders.  In the photograph the sister on the right has her arm wrapped around the other.  I couldn't get this to work and so their ended up being more of a merge occurring.  Frustration set in at first, but then I realized it was a part of the flow of the painting as it was a perfect illustration of their closeness. Knowing more now, it will be interesting to learn which painting each sister chooses.

Sisters… share so much.  Sure there are the occasional disagreements, but the love between them overcomes.

Day THIRTY of the "30 paintings in 30 days"…. Celebrate! It's been a busy, busy month.    One in which has pushed me more in different directions.  The figurative abstracts were a challenge in themselves, but one in which I discovered I had a knack for….and truly enjoyed painting them.  Another one of my discovery is what it takes to blog every day. It doesn't seem like much but you gotta make sure photographs are ready to go, listing the painting in the web gallery, writing something, links, etc.,  I often thought of my daughters who post several times a day on A Beautiful Mess.  My hat is off to you!  Thank you to all of you who hung in there read and commented this month, much appreciated.

Day Nine of the "30 paintings in 30 days".  The photograph I worked from with this painting is from the DPW challenge,  The Bathing Woman.  You don't have to be a member of the site in order to participate in their challenges.  I am a listing member, but have never participated in any of these challenges.  Well, until now. I have been wanting to work with some more figurative abstracts and found several photos on their to work with.  It's been a good place for me to start.  However, I am going to have begin looking for my own, take my own or perhaps my daughters from A Beautiful Mess would be so kind to allow me to use theirs!

I began this painting purely as a gesturally drawing done with a wash sketch pencil on wet watercolor paper.  My objective was to use color with a soft atmospheric effect and not loose the gesturally feeling.    If you have never worked with Gouache (French, pronounced gwash), it is a water-soluble opaque medium. I love that you can move the paint much like working with oils.  Unlike acrylics that dry permanently, you can come back later and re-work, soften etc., an area. Because they are an opaque, thicker paint than watercolors, I can stay with the painting longer, rather than having to stop allowing drying time between layers.  Try them sometime!

This one is different for me as it has a primitive or raw feel to it.  It was begun with graphite on wet watercolor paper followed by washes of acrylic paint. Lastly, the graphite lines were re-emphasized. Ordinarily, I would continue building layers that create a textured surface.  There is something appealing to me in this painting with less.  Sometimes the hardest is knowing when your done.  Again, expectations can get in the way of your thinking and they need to be let go.  Easier said....than done!
