I was having lunch with a couple of friends of mine last week when the title for this painting came to me.  I work intuitively and began this one with purple. Why purple? Well, it was the first color that came to my mind as I began. That led to the next color(s)/idea(s) and from their the painting began to emerge.  I'll have to admit working with the purples and green felt a bit unusual for me and really wasn't all that sure about it.  But, I do feel it is important to allow and follow each paintings flow and uniqueness. So, what does lunch have to do with this?

My friend Emily had taken off on a trail and is talking about a trip to Peru.  She is describing how BEAUTIFUL the Andes Mountains that run through Peru are with all the purples and greens.  I'm visualizing this scene that she is describing when instantly this painting that I had been working comes to my mind.  I interrupt (artist friends are use to these interruptions in conversations with each other as ideas are being tossed around) to show her a picture from that mornings painting on instagram. Which then leads us into a conversation about instagram…see how artist's converse with each other! It's like talking in circles, but amazingly much is accomplished.

Longstory short, later I googled for information and images of the Peruvian Andes Mountains and saw those colors that she was talking about. I then began seeing this painting in a different light and imagining. It is now hanging on one side of our living room wall, against a cafe colored wall.  Very striking and enjoying it much, well until one day.  The title comes from Alpamayo one of the highest peaks in the chain close to the Alpamuyu river. Can't be afraid of pink either for this one!

Green. Lately. it seems I've been in the mood to go through much of my paintings and paint over some of them.  A way of clearing out older paintings in order to make room for new ones and it's recycling.  Also, a sort of starting anew...a fresh start...a new chapter.  This painting "Orchestrate" was the first one of those to be gessoed over.  I was thinking this morning as I was gessoing over another one...that maybe I've started this also because it helps me believe in second chances.

Parlour: originally, a formal sitting room, any living room, a semi-private sitting room in a hotel,  a business establishment, etc..,  

This reminds me of a room that is full of life.  A place where one can spend time enjoying the company of family and others.  It makes me think of a room in our house that was purposely set aside for this exact purpose.   Years ago we decided that we would remove the t.v. from our upstairs living room in order to have a place to visit with less distractions.  We all have our own individual spaces but this place is special as it is our gathering spot.

Interesting how this painting came about as I painted the bottom side up and then turned it over and saw this scene.  I love the color scheme and loose gestural lines and I'm really considering it for a large painting which would be titled "The Parlour" (thanks Donnie!)  Lately, I have been feeling so inspired.  Someone once asked me "how do you know when your inspired?'  I had to think about this one for a bit.  The answer I came up with is..."it's kinda like when you begin feeling hungry and you know you need to eat"  Don't know how else to explain it.  More playing and experimenting, perhaps even some figurative and floral abstracts.....we'll see......

I have always loved a good fairy tale....so perhaps that is why I've been so enchanted by watching the Royal  Wedding between Prince William and Kate Middleton.  We also have two very important weddings coming up!!....May 15th our daughter Elsie will be marrying Jeremy Larson.  Then a little breather and we will have our son Doren marrying Sarah Lockhart October 1st.  Exciting!!

I have been back and forth to the easel with more ideas for this painting and yet each time my hand just stops.  Presently, it is hanging in our living room (the rotating wall) where I have pondered it's completion.   ..... and I have decided that it is finished.  'The Crossing' is much like my other recent paintings 'Concentre' and 'Equipoise' only it has a softer, lighter feel.  Still working in the warmer earth tones yet with a punch of vivid color. The photograph does not show it, but this painting is loaded with actual texture as well. ..........leaves home!!! Thought I would post the feeling of the emptiness when another baby leaves. This painting was a customized special painting with Kendra in mind. You can read more about it by clicking here. This was a painting that was completed several weeks ago and I had it hanging in our living room where I was enjoying it, with my morning coffee. So a bit of sadness, but the emptiness is replaced with joy in knowing that it was created to speak to, be enjoyed and be a part of Kendra's home. Thank you, Kendra!!!

Well, I am sitting here this morning enjoying a cup of coffee and this newest painting as it is hanging on our wall. This one was specifically painted with Kendra in mind. Kendra had been the original inspiration for "Nine", see in web gallery, in which she had suggested a painting with red, yellow and green and shades of. At the time I took it as a challenge and "Nine" was created. The number Nine emerged and actually a ninety-one which had significance to me at the time. I had no idea though that she was going to be interested in the purchase of the painting, and before she had the opportunity it was sold.

Many other paintings have been painted since and always in my mind I thought perhaps this one will be the one for Kendra- but never did I have the the surety of it as I did with this one. Eight is a number that I recently found out has major significance to Kendra. This painting was customized with the original red, yellow, green and shades of- and her personalized number.

She absolutely loves it!! So both "Nine" and "Eight" have found their rightful homes..... just a matter of time and waiting.

another baby leaves home.....

Ya, isn't that crazy?!! ....but it did feel like another one of the children was departing from the nest. This painting is titled "The Show" and it has been written about on my blog (in fact just a few days ago) and can also be seen on my Web Gallery. Erica has been absolutely in love with the colors in this work and is taking it home to hang above their couch.

Lately, I've been humbled by the interest and joy I see owning a work of mine brings other. I'm sorry to say that I enjoy the whole process of creating so much and of course the end result of that is to sell the work, that I had never thought a lot about how it makes the buyers feel.

Erica and Joe, it makes me so happy in knowing that this painting brings you joy and means so much to you. Thank you so much!!! "The Show" will be making it's new home in Omaha, Nebraska.

Second Act

I painted this one to replace another painting, THE SHOW, that someone was absolutely in love, in love with but then couldn't purchase it because it had sold.... or so we thought..... that's the long story short. BUT, because of this the idea for a theatrical series gave birth. This is the SECOND ACT, which will be followed by FINALE and lastly CURTAIN CALL.

I found it very difficult and procrastinated for days in starting this one. I was hung up on re-creating one like the first one, "The Show". Once I began and put that first mark down, it began to unfold and I simply allowed myself to go with the creative flow. This one has it's own uniqueness that I absolutely love. To see "The Show" and "Second Act" go to My Web Gallery (large abstracts) and they can be viewed side by side. Click on the photo for larger version and the magnifying glass to view detailed color. The reds in the photo of Second Act tend to all blend in the photo but under the magnifier it's possible to see all the golds, yellow, coppers and oranges that make this area so rich. The photographs are close but again just really do not give the paintings justice. The colors in both of these are beautiful!!

No two will ever be the same. I can't believe now that I thought I would be able to recreate the first one. My husband pointed out that it is just like having kids. That is so true. I even did that with them. After Elsie the oldest, who was born with the darkest hair and eyes I assumed that the second one would be just the same. Really I did. (you know dark hair and eyes are dominant) Well, then Emma came along and she looked a lot like her sister but had lighter hair and blue eyes. Then Doren, the youngest had blonde hair.

So now, because of this long story short there is a theatrical series, two paintings and a person who will be needing to make a decision.... or maybe not and take them both home!!!

Today, I went to pick up art work from Hawthorns Galleries here in Springfield, Mo., as they are preparing for their next featured artist. VERY..VERY ...very thankful for the work that has sold. I am also excited that they are going to continue to carry my work. If you happen to be in Springfield, Mo. you might just want to pop in and see what they have. This painting that I have posted today was one that I brought home today. I painted this last winter during a time that I guess you could say I was making a transition between the realistic and abstract. It began with a photo I had taken at a lawn and garden show. Having worked for many months realistically with transparent watercolors my intent was to paint this realistically with acrylics on canvas. Well, inspiration took over and before I knew it there was this painting that to me represented more of the feeling of the life of these flowers than the actual physical appearance.

These are presently hanging in the window of Hawthorns Galleries in downtown Springfield, Mo. It was one of those that did take me a bit to resolve. I worked on others while waiting and coming back for the next idea. It is definitely a favorite!! I began with the background and layers of acrylic paint that were allowed to drip and overlap each other, while at the same time pulling color out. The thinly layered cool colored background was contrasted with thick multi-layers of colored circles (pearls?) laying on the bottom of the sea shoal. The set of three panels are listed for $270.00. I am in a bit of a slump right now and so this morning I've just been going through and looking at my past work. This was one of the first ones I did several years when I started working with watercolors. I would cut these shapes out and then use them like a stencil, overlapping shapes, colors etc... in the end I discovered that the actual stencil(s) I was using could also become a part of the design and I began gluing them on the painting as in this one. I've always loved the greens, blues and textures with the hint of red violet implying a white flower in the background.

From this stage I went to painting realistic florals in which I really enjoyed the cropping of the flowers and creating paintings that were semi-abstract- the flower was definitely recognizable, but it was more about how I was using the space that challenged me. I really did enjoy painting these with transparent watercolors. Then I went to the abstract stage of the last few months. I so enjoyed the freedom of expression with the acrylic paints and a palette knife on canvas. Many of these were pure abstraction and others have recognizable images. I painted everyday for 8 months with purpose and confidence.

So where am I now? well it appears to be in a slump. I've enjoyed working in so many ways, but just feel as if I need to choose. I haven't painted for a week and am looking for inspiration but nothing seems to be happening. I keep thinking this is just a part of it and need to just accept and embrace this time. I've always believed that if I just kept painting everyday in time my own niche would emerge. So perhaps there is something to come from this. I hope. I also know that discipline in painting everyday is so important and am hoping to get back in.

I began this blog as way to record my journey and a part of that is where I'm at today, so I thought I would be honest and post that presently there isn't any flow of creative energy occuring. I'm giving myself some time and so may not be posting as often to work through this.
