Painting continues around the sides.

A surprise project to the staff of Mostly Serious moving from downtown Springfield, Mo into their new office spaces in the Galloway area. I was free to create an abstract painting with the only stipulation being that it be my interpretation of Galloway. I spent some time in the area, took a few pics and began tossing ideas around in my head as to how I would approach this painting. Often, when I do a commission I feel as if the painting is completed long before I begin painting as I have already painted it over and over in my head. Here I couldn't decide to go with the new construction or the softer natural organic almost Monet type feeling I was getting from a neighboring park. It finally came to me that I could combine both. Duh. I'm an abstract painter! But how? Well...this is it!!! "Stream Valley" I feel SO honored as a local artist to have been asked to create on of their first pieces. THANK YOU!!

Each time I begin a painting I believe. The first steps of just showing up at the easel and laying down those first marks or underlying color are often times the hardest. A dialogue begins and ends when the painting "In Pink," emerges. And it all began with, I believe.

Challenging myself to use a color that I have been avoiding for years. I'm not sure what happened as I was using Orange a lot when I first began painting abstractly. In the back of my mind I'm wondering if it doesn't have something to do with the time I was trying on an orange outfit, looking into the mirror I thought I looked like a pumpkin. I've not bought orange clothes either. Anyway, decided it was time to give it up. I've spent some time working with orange and am seeing myself beginning to use it again. yay! I do love the way it pops.

Fresh off the easel.  Gallant is the my most recent abstract painting.  Bold and bright color! This one reminded me of a similar style (although the color palettes are different) I have used with the paintings that are posted below.  With this particular style I am working with a limited palette, mixing a lot of variations applied in layered chunks of color.  COLORFUL, in Elizabeth Chapman style!

I just paint! Whatever happens is what happens. This one is a small painting but it has lots of layers (paint) creating lots of surface texture. It wasn't that it was intentional, it's just that it took that long for this painting to emerge. Some are quick to find, other's take time.  I would define it as not only having RICH color, but also a rich surface texture. SO, in titling I turned to my hubby who titles the majority of my paintings. Once in awhile, I come up with a good one. smile. Anyway, often he will asked, 'so, what does it remind you of?' To which I replied, 'can't you see it?!' 'it's like swampy, there's a tree, water, kinda has a southern feel to it'. Immediately, he came up with "Bayou"...and that's why we call him 'title man'!

Titled "Motif" but Cadbury might just be a better fit. My color palette totally changed on a binge with Cadbury eggs. I don't keep sweet around anymore, but I caved in and bought a bag of Cadbury Eggs this year. My favorites and you know there only available one time of year. So secretly kept them in the glove box of my car. For weeks I had done fine with just 2-3, ok 4-5 a day. I was to about a good handful when I binged on the remainder. Next day I go to continue work on a painting and the color palette TOTALLY changed on me. I stood back and thought, "oh my...it's those Cadbury eggs!" ha

One of my favorite quotes is by the artist Matisse and goes something like.. 'let the art speak for itself'.  Perhaps I so like that quote because it highlights THE ART and nothing else. And also, because I'm really not very good at articulating my thoughts in words. Not a wordie person. I've always been a quiet, shy and more on the introverted side...a visual communicator. As much as I would like for it not to be so, it is so.  let the art speak for itself takes the pressure off of explaining it.

I love hearing from others how a particular painting speaks to them. That is what I got to hear from the couple that commissioned this painting. This is one of two that I created for them. (I'll post the second one next time) It meant so much to me as an artist to be able to hear what this painting meant to them upon seeing the completed image. It really was a confirmation that art can speak for itself.

First, a bit on the commissioning information. I was given images from a style of work that I was doing from back a few years. like 2011.  Links here: Double Take, Thirds, Tonality and Gold Rush. (It was a challenge for me to go back and figure out what type of paint I had used. With this one I found it was Golden Liquid Acrylics, Azo Yellow and Quin Gold. Lots of layering working with them much like watercolors.) I have always loved and still do being turned loose on a commission without to many specifics. This was way different. BUT, I found that it actually made it so much easier than I would have thought. It was definitely the most detailed instructional commission that I have ever done and I loved it! 

In wrapping it up and sending an image for it's final approval, I was told what they saw in the painting. How it spoke to them. I knew nothing else about this couple except what I had been given concerning color and style. I was totally wowed by what they saw.  I am a believer in Jesus Christ and what He has done for us, but I don't attach my beliefs to my work at least in written word. I do often pray before I begin a painting and much while painting. When they told me that they saw a tomb, like a cave with the Arch, the squiggles on the side symbolizing the ascension of Christ and a cross in the center.  Amazing. They had wanted to ask me to place a cross in the painting, but where afraid they might disrupt the creative flow. But, there it was. How cool is that?!

Thank you Alexandra and Brian for choosing me to create this piece for your home...and thank you for sharing your story in order that I was able to see that art truly does speak for itself. I'm really not needed for that part.

Speaking for myself here. Some paintings are a zippy zip, started and finished so quickly. Others are matter of layering and time and then there are few that may take a few years before the painting is revisited and finally reaches completion. These two I'm posting were very quickly created. Spontaneous works of art.

This second was actually intended to be an underpainting. I posted it on instagram and it was so loved the way that it is, that it made  me think about perhaps leaving it. Maybe it's the energy or boldness.

"So, when is a painting completed?" seems like an age old question. Again, speaking for myself...I always feel it's important to go with the flow of the painting rather than devising some sort of formula. It's not about how much time it took, but more about whether it is working or not. Sometimes, well often for me...the hardest part can be that of letting go. Especially when it happens so quickly.

On the other end of the spectrum there is the problem of maybe overdoing a painting. Again, it's the knowing when to stop. BUT, if you should take that risk and pass that point there will always be another spot of completion. Just keep going till you reach the next ahha moment.

A spontaneous, Ah yes...I love it moment!!

Ever daydream?!

"What was the artist thinking while creating this work?" is a common question asked by collectors. Here are my thoughts:

It's good to dream and might as well dream big.  I am so thankful to be able to bring dreams to reality through the process of creating.  When I posted this painting on instagram the question was asked of me as to what the dream was about?  The short answer, "A world in which every one truly loves each other"  The longer version, is it was painted on election day here in the US (Nov. 8th), I was thinking about the division/sadness this election has caused in our nation, among family, friends, communities, etc., Like no other I have ever seen. Crazy. The dream was that we could all get along, loving each other and living in peace. What's so wrong with a little peace, love and understanding?! We ought to at least be able to respect each other's opinions and beliefs. That is what living in a free country is about. Anyway, just a dream....elizabeth

I am an artist. That wasn't something that I could always say with certainty. It's taken many years of painting to arrive to that point. Oh sure, there was always that still small voice within that nudged me and told me that art was my gift. But until I stepped out in faith and began practicing, I could not know. So, what's this post about. It's about being certain and then again, not certain.

On the other hand painting doesn't always carry the same amount of certainty. There are many times when I feel uncertain, doubtful of the piece that I am working on.  I believe that it is the artist in me that always sees things optimistically...it will all work out, viewpoint.  This is essential when your going through that stage of a painting  that most referred to as "the ugly stage".  Just keep going.

A bit on this title. My husband is the title person.  Now and then I come up with one and when I do I like getting credit for it! When I showed him the image of this painting for title ideas, his immediate response was ooh la la. ....and I said, "that's it"!  So, there you have it.

I haven't been posting these paintings in the order that I have been completing them. This is my latest, that was actually created as a test run for a very large commissioned triptych painting that I will begin working on soon. The requested color scheme is to be much like a previous one, Emotive. The colors are rich, reminding me much like those in the midwestern Fall. Therefore, I thought it would make a nice painting to post for this week with our US holiday, Thanksgiving. It has actually become my favorite holiday. I love that it brings our family, friends and nation together for a day of remembering and publicly giving thanks to God for ALL that he so graciously provides.  I can remember when it was much more of commercialized holiday than it is today and that is another thing that I love about it. All the commercialism can so easily draw our focus and hearts away from the Creator. 

Remember to take sometime to be thankful, not just for Thanksgiving (US) but every day of the year.
