'Quick Blooms' & 'Mixed Bouquet' July workshop at Splatter Art Studio

These are demos from the July "Quick Blooms & Mixed Bouquet" class that I taught at Splatter Art Studio in Springfield, Mo. The bottom was begun with a gesturally drawing from a floral still life and then painted in the same manner. The top was begun as a group collaboration with each student adding a shapes, colors, lines, etc., to each others canvases. (see next pic) Then they were to use their imaginations to find and make the florals out of what was given to them. Mixed Bouquet. The object was to paint quickly and not have time to overthink it. Two paintings in four hours! Phew.

The start for the "Mixed Bouquet" demo.

End of the day creations!

I have taught at Splatter Art Studio once a month for the last year and have had a different theme each time. The month of July it was floral abstracts. Teaching really helps me to think through my processes and have more of an understanding of why I do what I do. I don't teach any particular technique. I'm more into sharing my own thought processes in the hope that it will help others to tap into their own creative mode. This month I painted a lot of floral abstracts which can be seen on my website: elizabethchapmanartwork. It may have had something to do with my thinking about this class! 😉

On the easel

In process

The top image is the actual painting in it's completion. The painting was created for a local venue, Marketplace Vineyard in Ozark Mo. in which I was asked if I would do some live painting for a Second Friday Night Art Walk. Of course. Painting live can be a distraction for me and so I began the painting at home where I could be more focused, sipped on wine while painting at the event (glass of wine on my palette) and finished out with the details later back home. A lovely evening!

Story behind the title. As so often happens to me, what turns out to be the strongest viewing placement will be the upside down from what I painted. Imagine picking it up, turning it upside down on the easel. Now look at it. That is the way I painted this one for the most part. I had reached a point where I really did not know what to do next and decided to leave it for it bit. This can often help give me a fresh perspective and the answer will be right there when you I get back. Another thing I will do is take a picture. Often times this can also help me to see what's next. In this case, I took several pics. I needed to be somewhere and I took off. Later, I opened up my phone camera and saw the image turned. It literally took my breath away, I gasped...and I was instantly, 'In Love!'

The original painting is currently still available.

Blu Skies

Blu Skies
30 x 40 x 1.5 inch canvas, Acrylic

Available!

To purchase directly from my website link: HERE

This painting was begun as a demo for a workshop that I taught at Splatter Art Studio in Springfield, Mo. It had a really great start with a rawness to it that I really enjoyed and found hard to get past. So, I let it sit for awhile and came back to it when I was ready to let go. I turned it and began the work of layering colors, shapes and mark making.

Stream Valley

Stream Valley
Acrylic on 36 x 48 x 1.5 inch

Commission

SOLD

On the wall at Mostly Serious...Springfield, Mo.

Painting continues around the sides.

A surprise project to the staff of Mostly Serious moving from downtown Springfield, Mo into their new office spaces in the Galloway area. I was free to create an abstract painting with the only stipulation being that it be my interpretation of Galloway. I spent some time in the area, took a few pics and began tossing ideas around in my head as to how I would approach this painting. Often, when I do a commission I feel as if the painting is completed long before I begin painting as I have already painted it over and over in my head. Here I couldn't decide to go with the new construction or the softer natural organic almost Monet type feeling I was getting from a neighboring park. It finally came to me that I could combine both. Duh. I'm an abstract painter! But how? Well...this is it!!! "Stream Valley" I feel SO honored as a local artist to have been asked to create on of their first pieces. THANK YOU!!

Someday Soon

Someday Soon
48 x 48 x 1.5 inch canvas
Acrylic

Specially requested- SOLD

This painting will eventually be stretched on stretcher bars with a 1.5" depth sides. It is a canvas that was secured to the wall. Markings can be seen where the 48 x 48 edges of the painting will be seen. It will be shipped in a tube. Message me if interested in a commissioned piece.

There's a smile followed by a celebration that takes place when an artist has completed a painting! That moment. I'm very happy with this one.  I often get asked "how do you know when a painting is finished?" For me, it's when i feel as if I just can't add one more color or mark. Sure, I've crossed that line before and..hey it's ok we're just off to the making of another painting. It will work out. A painting can have many lovely places to be done at. This is just where I have chosen to be be. Now time to sit back, enjoy and celebrate!! Cheers! 🍷😊. More of my completed celebrations can be seen and/or purchased from my website: elizabethchapmanartwork

Colorful World

Colorful World
Acrylic on 11 x 14 paper

SOLD

This is one of three painted works while on a road trip from my hometown to Niagara Falls and Toronto, Canada. I have lived my entire adult life in Springfield, Missouri. It is a part of my heritage. I totally understand and love the mid-western culture. What most people don't know about me, is that ingrained in this gal from the Ozarks is a Hispanic heritage from a childhood that was mostly lived in Venezuela. I am equally as comfortable and at home in a multicultural environment. That is what I have found here in my visit to New York and Toronto, Canada. Today was a most beautiful day spent in Kensington Market-Toronto. This one is for you! I see a world that is happy, friendly and where people love one another. It has much color! I believe we choose what we want to see. Hope yours is a colorful world too!  Although, this painting as sold there are many more of color on my website: elizabethchapmanartwork

Enjoy!!
