El Amor

"The success of a country is through the education of the people."  -Dr. Rafael Vegas Sanchez (Dec. 8,1908- Dec.30,1993)

Dedicating this painting in memory of my 'abuelo' (grandfather) who loved, believed in and served the people of Venezuela. It is a scene overlooking the city of Caracas with the northern mountain range, La Avila. One of my favorite stories is of him as a young man while living in France attending medical school organized a small army and rented a ship (El Falcon). They would meet up with several other groups along the coastline of Venezuela where there would be a surprise attack in order to overthrow a tyrannical government. Through various miscommunications the attempt failed and he was forced to flee into the forest. This cost him his health as he contracted an inoperable parasite that would weaken his heart and in turn shorten his life span.  He was able to escape and return to medical school in France. His early profession began as a practicing psychiatrist in Caracas, Venezuela. There he saw a need for children that were abandoned and opened an orphanage were their needs could be met and they could be educated. It was through the success of this program that he would receive a phone call from the President of Venezuela asking him to serve as Minister of Education. And so, began his dream for the country's success through the education of it's people. He accepted. Frustration set in as he was not able to accomplish the programs that he envisioned because of government bureaucracy. He came to a realization that his dream could be accomplished, but it would have to be at a smaller scale. So, he opened up his own school with grades 1-12,  which would become known as one of if not the best school in Caracas, Santiago De Leon.
As a young girl, I remember visiting this school and being quite impressed. It had an olympic size swimming pool, playgrounds, a zoo (the monkey's where my favorite), a two story building with classrooms, and an outdoor like cafeteria where I remember black beans, rice and plaintains being  served for lunch with a trip to 'la cantina' afterward for a treat. The whole school would gather in the circle drive before school to sing the national anthem together. I would stand by my grandfather's side and I knew he was just as proud as could be to walk his only grand-daughter around the school. They also had the coolest pleaded gray skirts and white blouses as a uniform for the girls! School buses had a teacher who rode along and she was treated with much respect as you got on and off of the bus. I have many fond memories of visiting this school. I am proud of this man who out of El Amor (Love) for the people of Venezuela saw his dream come true. Not on a large scale, but through quality and consistency in a smaller circle of influence provided Venezuelan children with a place were they could be educated to later go on to professions much like he had.
My cousin Dario Carrera and his family will be the recipients of this painting where it will be displayed in their home in Caracas,Venezuela.

Dream Big!!

Journey

Journey

So many layers and so many changes as I progressed through this painting. Click on the image to see it closer. I use acrylic markers in my paintings in particular for the final marks. They are acrylic so just like the paint they are not going to fade. From the initial brushstrokes to the finale detailing with markers it truly was a journey. There were a few frustrations along the way but it all ended with joy as it's beauty was revealed.

In LOVE

In Love
Acrylic on 40 x 40 x 1.5 inch canvas
Ready to hang

Available

A little story behind this piece.  I began this painting with the intent of taking to an art walk in which I had been invited to paint live. I wanted to have something that would be near completion as I knew it would be difficult to focus. This painting was actually turned with the bottom up on my easel as that was they way I began it and was working through to that point of frustration. I needed to get away. I snapped a pic and then decided to turn it bottom up and took a pic. Out the door and on down the road I went. While waiting at a stop light I decided to take a look at the two pics. The first and then the second one. It was then that literally my jaw dropped in amazement. I love it, i love it SO much and felt razzled dazzled by it. I was, "In Love" 😍

on a lighter wall?

or on a darker wall?

what do you think?

Just realized that I had not posted this one on my blog. It's been out there listed on several sites for weeks. Sorry.  I'm not sure why it is that I don't post as often as I use to. Part of it may be that I began in 2008 posting every day...for years, or it could be too that I'm posting on a lot of other sites, social media, etc.,  things have a way of coming back around full circle. Maybe it will pick up again! I'm on the internet everyday so no excuse here.

Another one from this latest series in which I am consciously thinking in a "less is more" mode. Bold, colorful expressive color is still happening though! and I love color so don't see that going out. However, I am working more neutrals into my work. I have been thinking about working on a series, perhaps 2-3 paintings in which I use the same limited color palette throughout.

Bold Expressions..."Viva"

Viva
Acrylic on 40" x 48" x 1.5" canvas

SOLD

This is the third painting that I did in response to a commissioned project. Scroll down to see the other two. I was afraid that my client wasn't happy with the first one that I painted, so I painted two more.  Turned out she absolutely loved the first one, once she saw it in real and in her home. This being the third, I was still working with her color palette...but by this time I was needing to let go. A much bolder, colorful and expressive painting was the result. I do love this painting as I feel it has a lively Spanish feel to it.  In time some one will find it as the perfect painting for their home!

I've been enjoying painting without so much rushing to photograph, title and list.  New paintings are piling up against the wall in the studio.  They still have not been photograph and I still need to begin working on my new website where I will begin listing them.   But, hey...I've got all summer, right?

Thankfulness.  I try to remember to offer up praises of thanksgiving as I go through each day. The little things.  This time of year, I believe we tend to look at the year as a whole in thinking about what we are most thankful for. Artistically, I am fortunate to have had a wonderful year for selling my paintings. Creating and using the gift I have been given is important to me, but without you I would soon run out of storage space.  Thankful for those who take an interest,  purchase and collect my abstract paintings. Thank you, SO much!!

Modern Abstract Paintings on small canvases, "Precipice", "Mountain", "Longview" by Elizabeth Chapman

"Precipice"
Acrylic on 10" x 10" canvas

"Mountain"
Acrylic on 10" x 10" canvas

"Longview"
Acrylic on 10" x 10" canvas

All three of these paintings are currently available from my website, Etsy store or Zatista.

It can be a difficult task to get back to work after having been away for awhile.  We just got back from a wonderful family vacation with daughters from A Beautiful Mess, and son from dorenchapman.com.
So how to get back in the creative mode...back to work.  Well, for starters...just go.  Don't feel as if you have to whip something up every time your in the studio.  There are a lot of other needed things that can be done when in the studio when your not painting.   Today, I begun by applying a light varnish to some paintings that were completed several weeks ago. (these have already been listed) I always photograph before applying varnish as it prevents having to work with any glares. I use a gloss varnish that is applied lightly as I don't care for a glossy finish.

Thankfully, I had these three paintings that were finished and listed several weeks ago ready to be posted. They were painted together in several sessions layering and building up surface texture. They very much look as if they could go together as one piece, a triptych. I am really hoping that they will sell that way, but they could be purchased as separate pieces.

Now, to find what else needs to be done in here..... perhaps tomorrow back to painting or who knows, maybe today!

LARGE Contemporary Abstract Painting "Ultramod" by Elizabeth Chapman

Ultramod
Acrylic on 40" x 60" wrap canvas

SOLD

Painted back in 2013 and just sold! No, they don't sell fresh off the easel, at least not for me. The important thing is to just continue to paint.  Be encouraged that they do in their own time find their home.  Also, it seems, that sometimes the most popular paintings are the slowest to go...go figure.  This one became an extremely popular painting which I did not know at the time that would occur.  I just paint and work on finding a painting's composition, color palette and flow along the way.  It's own voice, so to speak.  Unique.

It brings me much joy to paint and even more to know a work  is going to be well loved!

Contemporary Palette Knife Abstract Painting by Elizabeth Chapman

Salvo
Acrylic on 30" x 30" x 1.5" canvas

ORIGINAL

SOLD

To purchase this painting or for more information email me: elizabethchapmanart@gmail.com

This one was done with a palette knife painting. Colors are dipped out from a jar of paint, applied and mixed on the canvas. It has been a while since I did one of these and really enjoyed getting back into it.  I don't believe the image of the painting does it justice as there are so many tiny pieces of color that the camera reads much of it into one color. Much merging of color occurs.

Floridian Expressionistic Inspiration "Equa" by Contemporary Artist Elizabeth Chapman

Equa
Acrylic on 30" x 40" x 1.5" canvas

Fresh off the easel!

ORIGINAL 2015

SOLD

Painting may be purchased directly from my website: HERE

or email me: elizabethchapmanart@gmail.com

This painting was inspired by a recent trip that we took to Florida around the middle of February.  The first thing my eyes caught site as I looked out from the airport was all of the palm trees, blue skies and sand. Green, green, green,...everywhere!

We were welcomed back to Missouri with 20 degree weather, gloomy skies and brown trees.  This painting was a way to visually journal those pure Floridian experiences. Can you see any of it?!

It's been nearly a month since I painted this one, but with the snow and cold weather was not able to get outside to photograph it. LOL.So, here it it....enjoy!!
