'Afflatus'
Acrylic on 12" x 12" x 3/4" canvas
Available, here

Busy working on another larger painting...I  enjoy going back and working on the smaller formats from time to time.  This one has lots of texture!

This week we had the pleasure to meet  Bruce Docker and his wonderful wife Judy. We have really enjoyed viewing his paintings on the Missouri Daily Painters and my husband has especially been drawn to his woodcuts.  We drove out to his home to pick these up and had the opportunity to meet and encourage a local artist. These are a couple of mugs with his woodcut prints that we purchased from him.  Bruce's work can be found on the Missouri Daily Painters as well as his own personal blog, here.

Well... I began this painting with the thought of working with emerald green. That was it until.....the red came in!  I've not been quite sure of it....but then my hubby reminded me of how a painting is a gift from Above.  I won't argue that one!!

Golden Centre, Modern Contemporary, Geometric, Original, Abstract Painting, Elizabeth Chapman

'Golden Centre'
'Acrylic on 36" x 36 x 1.5" gallery canvas
Available

I've been experimenting lately with mixing and painting with neutrals and beginning the abstracts with a sketch taken from small thumbnail designs that I've done.  Do I always stick with this preliminary plan....mostly not...but it is a place to begin.   Decided to add color which turned out to be a little harder than it appears in finding a balance.

I had my little helper working with me on this painting!  That is our 14 month grand daughter who is currently living with us.  If you click on the painting for a larger view you will see her work on the bottom right hand corner.  I sat her down with a crayons, markers and paper to play, which I knew would buy me at least 20 minutes while I textured the canvas and laid in a basic structure.  It was the cutest thing ever when after her attention span with the crayons had ended she proceeded to imitate me with her orange marker on the canvas and even created some texture.  And then........here's the cutest part.......she was sooooo proud of her self.  She would continually go back to show others her work.

I just could not bring myself to cover this up....and it has been incorporated into the design.  I will lastly place my initials here before sealing it.  Thank goodness I'm into abstracts!!!

As I began plans for this painting I was thinking about  working with some reds contrasted with neutrals.     This painting is what emerged which has reminded us of another one I did several years ago for my sister-in-law, Karin.  Scroll down to see it or you can read it's post here.

Mesmerize, Modern Contemporary, Original, Abstract Painting, Expressionistic, Missouri Artist Elizabeth Chapman

'Mesmerize'
Acrylic on 36" x 36" x 1.5" gallery wrap canvas
Available

For whatever reasons I just can't seem to find the words to describe this painting, other than their was a flow that occurred in which their was a total consumption of the moment.  Captivated and mesmerized by it.  I like to think of it as a gift from God, the creator as His Spirit moves through me and as I respond with visual elements that speaks a language to others.  I believe that art does this for others too.

I received a comment last week that just so spoke, encouraged and confirmed to me that these abstract paintings really do speak.  This person had just found my blog as she was standing watch with her father in a hospital and the paintings had given her something that was helping her.  She had told me to keep painting.  This touched my heart to know that art was speaking to someone else's needs.  I hope that all is well.

Hopefully, I've been able to communicate some understanding here... I think Henry Matisse said it best..."Let the art speak for itself"

Impromptu...Modern Contemporary, Abstract Painting, Missouri Artist, Original, Elizabeth Chapman

"Impromptu"
Acrylic on 24" x 30" x 1.5" gallery wrap canvas
Available

Snow.... snow.....snow.... we got eleven inches last week with the Blizzard of 2011!  It took four days before we could get out....so what do you do....paint...paint....paint!!  "Impromptu" was photographed inside so it's close....but I will get a better pic outside later.   We ventured out Friday night in yet another snow fall for my opening at Obelisk Home for the First Friday Artwalk in Springfield.  We had a wonderful time and then came the time to go home.  Almost home, when we got stuck in the snow...actually it turned out it gave us the opportunity to meet some neighbors who were sooooo wonderful to help us out.

I am linking an interview that Kelly Powers with Creative Catalyst Productions has so graciously written
about my art.  It can be read by clicking, here.

Tao Triptych, Modern Contemporary, Abstract Painting, Original, Missouri Painter Elizabeth Chapman

'Tao'  (triptych)

Available

This is my first very LARGE painting.  It was done on three separate 20" x 60" that were hung on my studio wall.  Total measurement is a 60" x 60" square.  Working on this large of a painting was difficult in that I couldn't see what was going on on one side as I was working on another side.  So, I had to do a lot of walking away and standing back.   It was a new challenge...

The painting will be in the February show at "Obelisk Home".
