Modern Expressionistic Abstract Painting "Matza" by Elizabeth Chapman

Matza
Acrylic on 8" x 8" canvas

ORIGINAL 2016

Available from my Etsy store: HERE

Another one and oh there's more! This one has a high horizontal landscapish compositional feel to it. If your an abstract artist composition is everything. It would probably be much easier if I chose a composition before I began.  But, typically I don't.  I just begin, with that beginning leading to the next idea and so on I go until I feel it's complete.  I'm going with the flow of the painting, but at the same time I am always thinking about how to pull a painting off compositionally.  Most of the time it works. Now and again there is a struggle that occurs with a painting. Nine times out of 10 it's not working because there is a design problem. So, that's when I go back to those composition rules/guidelines to figure out how to make it work.  Yes, that's right...it would be much easier to begin with them! The beauty of this small abstract is all the layering that occurred as I was finding my way to a design.

Modern Expressionistic Abstract Painting "Mardi" by Elizabeth Chapman

Mardi
Acrylic on 30" x 40" canvas

Available

This painting will be shipped to Veranda's Fine Art Gallery & Gift Shop in Fair Haven, New Jersey.  I just finished another one (post next) that will also be sent as well.  I was contacted by Debbie through my Etsy store on the possibility of sending work to her gallery. The distance is far, from Springfield, Mo to New Jersey so obviously the pieces will have to be exclusive to Veranda's. We will start with a few large and small pieces and see how it goes.

Lots going on here, I agree.  Once I got into the painting the challenge became to use as much color as possible and still pull off unifying the piece. The most difficult time came later as I was trying to decide which way to display the painting. Obviously, I can only show it one way. But, I found that it could be turned in several other directions for a pleasing composition.

Day TWENTY FOUR

Limitless
Acrylic on 30"H x 40"W x 1.5" wrap canvas
NFS

Day TWENTY FOUR…of the 30 paintings in 30 days challenge.  This painting was a special request from my daughter Emma for her and her husband's home.  She asked that it be a black and white painting. My  last attempt at a black and white painting was Amalgama…see here.  As you see it did turn out to have a bit more color than just black/white, but it was close.  It's been one of my goals to paint a few black/white paintings so this was perfect to get me going.  Working with a limited palette turned my focus more towards texture and design.  You can click on the image to see more of a close up. The canvases for these are in, so you should be more of these to come next month.
