Contemporary Expressionistic Palette Knife Painting

Palette knife painting with metallic copper, silver and gold intertwined with color.  My first palette knife painting was one titled "Indian Summer" out of which the opportunity to do a commissioned painting "Better Two" emerged (two large 24" x 60" panels).  Since then there has been Rich, Mestizo, Curtain Call, Iridescent, Fancy Flight, Italia, Rainy Day Cafe and now "New Dawn".  These are done with a palette knife, paint straight from the tube with the mixing of colors done on the canvas.  The metallics may be hard to see as they do not photograph well, but this painting is gorgeous in the bright light.

New Dawn reminds me of the newness or freshness that comes with each morning.  Another day is a gift to be treasured and enjoyed.  Like a city on a hill as the sun is coming up, it begins to bring light to one side of the hill and as it spreads it brings light and warmth to the coolness and darkness of night ...and with it hope.

Lately, I've taken a step back to evaluate what I am doing, what to continue and so forth.  The colorful floral abstracts are definitely an area I would like to continue to explore.  I would also like to continue the large abstract expressionistic paintings, as well as more palette knife paintings.   So stay tuned..... and I hope you enjoy!!

Abstract Expressionism Palette Knife

I haven't quite made it out yet for my first pumpkin latte for the season from Starbucks. Maybe today?! That is what this painting reminded me of- coffee!! As a child growing up in Venezuela, my grandmother Simone would fix us a cup of cafe con leche. This was a small cup of some very,very strong coffee with lots of cream and sugar. It was wonderful!! I love going to coffee houses or even just the smell as I walk past one!!

This is one of those paintings that did not come together that quickly and was a bit of a struggle. It turned out to be a matter of selecting the areas that were the most interesting and allowing them to become the focal by de-emphasizing those surrounding areas through glazing. A rainy day coffee house, with it's reflection in the street. Can you see it?

As far as the idea for the painting, well most of the time I just select a color palette and begin. The first stroke is the hardest! ..... after that one leads to the next and next and..... The verticals seem to continue to emerge through many of my paintings. It seems very natural and my signature when working abstract expressionistically.

..... well, sounds like rain out there this morning and smells like the coffee is ready!... gotta go

The Moment

As I was painting , I was thinking about what a beautiful blue the sky had been that afternoon, after a storm had came through and all the tops of the trees contrasting against the blue. This small abstract painting is a moment captured in time. It's also made me think about how we so often allow our thoughts to dwell on the past or are pushing ahead and worrying about the future, rather than just being thankful for and living in the day. We have a friend who at one time was homeless and has had to learn to survive from day to day. His favorite phrase he uses a lot is "live in the moment". Enjoy the day!

little bitty polka dot.... Another small abstract that I am just absolutely loving!! This is one of those that I only wish it had been painted on a large square canvas. Thinking about it?!.... Still these small paintings can be used to fill smaller spaces with splashes of color. They can easily be framed and collected and displayed in a grouping as well.

....created through the stark contrast in dark and light colors. This painting gives me a rainy day type of feeling. .... and bar-b-que food! How about you? I'm one of those people who enjoys eating..... have even found scriptural support for it! It truly is a blessing- am I sounding hungry or what?!

The design to this painting was begun with the white shapes on a black canvas. Color was then layered, balanced and built up around these areas resulting in this night time city scape.

And people should eat and drink and enjoy the fruits of their labor, for these are gifts from God. Ecclesiastes 3:13

Better Two (1 of 2)

These are the two panels that I have just completed as a commissioned job. They were delivered to their home yesterday. The paintings will be displayed one on each side of a fireplace in a room with vaulted ceilings. They were fashioned from another smaller painting titled "Indian Summer" in which bright, bold colors and an abstract skyline were requested.

And below are the two panels photographed together under low light in my studio and therefore the colors are not as true as the photos above. But, when placed side by side you can see were the two come together to form a ........ can you see it? Not planned but a wonderful occurrence to symbolize the love in this family. These will add beautiful splashes of color to their walls!!

....i'm back! Well, ya I guess I ended up taking off more than just the day. Yes, it's been a long wonderful weekend! ...and I'm all refreshed with new ideas ready to get back to work---tomorrow. Also, just how do you follow a blog like the last one??? Well..... with Passion!

This painting I am posting is one of the most recent ones. It was actually painted after having completed a commissioned piece. By accident I had all three of these paintings in close proximity to each other in my studio when I noticed the consistency between them. This was exciting to me because I believe it shows my own individual style emerging. The other two that could be included would be Italia and Night Life.

Can you tell? To the left you can see one of the two panels of "Better Two" (a commissioned piece I will post more later), Passion on the easel, and Indian Summer underneath. Exciting!!

This painting will light up a room!! I will be doing a commissioned work based off of this painting, Indian Summer (posted earlier) and Italia which recently sold. The colors will be bold and vivid like Indian Summer and have an abstract skyline like Night Life. Each panel will measure 60" x 24" and hang vertically on a long wall separated by a fireplace. ....and of course, I will post these when completed!!

Yesterday, in meeting the family and being in the home in which these paintings will be hung, it struck me of what an enormous influence that the work that I so love doing will have on this family. It will be a part of their family for years to come. With this thought in mind I am both honored and humbled.

Monday......back to work

Indian Summer

What do you do when you really don't feel like working? Ever feel like that on a Monday?! This painting was began with that sort of a feeling. After having endured criticism in which I felt I might lose my inspiration and confidence in working with bold color, I knew I had to get back in there. Once again, I don't feel this photograph does this painting justice. There are layers and layers of layered colored painted with a palette knife and acrylic paint. When viewing this work up close you can see all these colors and from a distance they blend. It is beautiful!

An interest has been expressed in my doing a large commissioned piece in this style. Similar paintings to this one that I have done are Night Life and Italia (two panels). I enjoy very much this technique and am excited about this opportunity. I will definitely post them as well.

Contemporary Palette Knife Painting

Sooo, I was inspired with some new colors that I bought this week.  I painted a lot of small paintings this morning.  This one that I posted was the first one-   and so did I have to use every color in the same painting?!  apparently I did with this one!  I've been away from doing the pure abstracts for a few weeks and painting these smaller ones helps me to get back to.....

the larger canvas's.  We picked up two really large ones this week.  A 3ft x 4 ft and a 30" x 40".  Perhaps tomorrow- I've been tossing ideas around, but then what most usually happens is those  first marks will lead to the next, and then the next, and the next.... it's just kinda scary starting.  I always feel intimidated in the beginning.  It's that just getting started.

It's raining again.  I love these spring showers that are just enough to water the flowers and the garden.  This was another one of those paintings from last weeks power outage. (hopefully no more of those outages)  The peonies always bloom in time for Mother's Day.  Knowing that we had a big rain coming, I went out, cut a bouquet and then they somehow became a painting!
