Art Show at the Waverly House..."Triumph" and "Fly Away"

These are two of my student's work that were entered in a juried show at the Waverly House here in Springfield, Mo. Jenna's (age 13) piece "Triumph"(top left) won Best of Show! and Allison's (age 11) piece "Fly Away" won Juror's choice!! The paintings are photographed with the art supplies they won. It has been an honor and a privilege to work with these two sisters for the past three years. When we first began with the lessons, Jenna was into realism and Allison the younger sister was the abstract artist.

Jenna is still into realism and very talented, but has also now taken an interest in the abstract realm. "Triumph" was a painting that she had to push herself through, as there were many stages in which she was not satisfied... so I encouraged her to keep on until she was. ....and she did with the results being a very beautiful abstract! I began working with Allison in the abstract realm because that was her interest. At the time she did not want to have anything to do with realism. After a year of lessons I encouraged her to try some realism. We began with drawing from a photograph with pencil and paper. I talked to her about how simple it is once you realize that it is all about observing relationships between lines, shapes and spaces. I will never forget the moment that she caught on to all this as she was so excited and went on and on about how she loved drawing realistically! Her painting "Fly Away" is a merging of her abstract side and newly found realistic side. As you can imagine...I am very proud of them....way to go girls!!

This painting has gold and silver metallic paint mixed in, accenting the reds and blues. Unfortunately, the metallics don't photograph so well. Fresh off the easel and just posted to my website. I've got an order of large canvases from canvasplace.com (best place ever) coming in next week and very excited about getting back to the plentiful play spaces. (try saying the last three words fast three times!)

I would call this painting an extended palette knife painting, as it began much like Iridescent or New Dawn and then evolved using a roller into much more. I augmented the red with orange and the blue by adding the green. In finalizing the painting I then used white and incorporated the metallics, gold and silver, last.

I just posted this small abstract on the Daily Paintworks where I have been posting many of my most recent small abstracts. I do have one large abstract on there as well. For me sometimes the hardest thing about about creating a new work is getting over my own preconceived ideas of what I want, letting go, going with the flow of the painting and allowing the work itself to unfold and show me the way. It's a very difficult spot to be in, one in which I am feeling as if it just isn't working, but one in which I become willing to take many risks. I have learned that in fact this is when it is actually all coming together and I am trusting in the process.

"Dawning" is mostly a palette knife painting. I say mostly, because I did use a roller at one point to soften up edges and a small brush for detailing spheres in the end. There is ALOT of texture that was created with the paint itself that I believe is a wonderful enhancement to the painting. Click on the image itself to see a close up of this for your enjoyment.

Perhaps you've noticed or maybe not...but I've been on a track with painting small paintings lately. I do have a large one on the easel, but not sure if it's finished yet. It's always a period of adjustment when going back to working with the larger spaces. These little ones are great exercises and make for a wonderful collection of small colorful paintings on a wall.

Thought I would post today as I'll be keeping Penny tomorrow until Wednesday. Although, I can't really paint, paint when she's here (or post) I did work on the texture for a larger painting the last time she was here and she worked by my side doing some chalk and pencil work on it. This girl absolutely LOVES to spend time in the studio! There are many things that I lock up and put up when I know she's coming, but still lots to get into it. I don't mind as I believe this encourages her to be involved in the art making process. She now has her own box of markers, paints, pencils, canvas etc.....pretty much her studio! If you have young children at home I encourage you to provide them with materials they can use to stretch their imaginations and nurture their creativity. Here is Penny busy arranging and organizing buttons on a canvas while I was working. Perhaps the buttons where an inspiration for this painting! She is so full of life and fun to be with!!

Some might wonder why many of my images are not signed. Well, here is the reason....seeing the photographed image helps me determine whether a painting is completed. Or, in rotating the image I find I like the painting better in another position than I painted it and then have to go back and change the initials. So, I have just decided to not sign them until I know, know for sure. But then now and again, there will be the painting that I feel is complete with no more changes and rather than re-photograph.... I'll use that first image. Call me lazy, I guess. They are each initialed MEC on the front, signed, titled and dated on the back before being packaged and shipped to their new home.

I created this painting as an example for a class on basic techniques of working with transparent watercolors that I will be teaching in April here at Ozarks Technical College in Springfield, Mo. I have found that the teaching of the watercolor medium is difficult. For one thing there needs to be a willingness to go with the flow rather than control it. Also, there is a process of layering values and colors to create depth that requires patience. So, with these two things in mind...this first lesson was developed. With a bit of an abstract twist there are no worries about having to control this medium and you can also see how the process of layering colors works with transparent watercolors.

So here is the first lesson if you would like to try it.

Supplies needed: 140lb. cold press watercolor paper, if you don't already own tubed watercolors a PRANG watercolor set (preferably the two tray) will work. A palette and brushes and....lots of water!

Step One: Make a large stencil of an object. (this will give your painting some realism) As you can see from my painting I used a bottle. Save your cutout it can be used as well.

Step Two: Place your stencil on the paper and outline it. Now take your stencil and cut or tear it into at least three pieces.

Step Three: Take these pieces and move them around (overlapping the drawing is o.k) Once a pleasing design has been found tape these down. You can also at any time use the negative space of the stencil. That is the piece that you cut your object from.

Step Four: Begin painting using a color that is very light in value, paint plus lots of water! Paint over the whole paper with this color. Let dry. Pull the pieces off and you will have only white shapes left. Many watercolorist only use the white of their paper for white. No white paint used.

Step Five: Repeat step four, taping and overlapping pieces over previous color and anywhere. Paint over these with that same color and value or use another color. The object is to paint from light to dark. So, don't get to dark to quick. Let dry. Once again when you take the pieces off you will now see the previous layers of values and colors.

Step Six: Continue this process of overlapping pieces, painting and letting it dry. Use your imagination, be creative and have playful fun with it! You can take this as far as you want to. I chose to work with a mostly warm color palette with a bit of cool colors. Also, you don't have to always let the paper dry to take the stencils off. It is best to let it dry though before applying another layer.

Step Seven: Work on pulling the original drawing out so that it is somewhat recognizable and you will have some realism. Hopefully, during the process of painting you have seen for yourself how watercolors can be layered and built up to create depth and your now working a bit more abstractly!

I took it a step further and began playing with some oil pastels (bottom right bottle)and watercolors over them, rubbing the paint back out and found that I really liked that effect. Feel free to elaborate on your painting. I wanted to keep it basic so that students could see the basic overall effect, so I stopped.

I was contacted by a family in Joplin, Mo., who had gone through the devastation that the May 2011 tornado left behind wondering if I would create a painting for their new home. Thankfully, they had survived as they had huddled together in the center of their home, but the house had not. I was so humbled and honored to have been chosen to create a work that they would use as a color palette for their new living area. This painting is to hang above the fire place. It will also serve as a reminder of that day and the salvation that they experienced.

As far as the color palette, Monica suggested that she liked a painting that she saw on my website titled "Fidelity." (which now hangs in my daughter Emma's home, as I've been giving each of our children a painting, and she chose it) Click here to see an image of it from a past blog entry. Also, she liked another painting, "Desire" click here, for it's simplicity and the red in it. It was from these two paintings that I worked with the idea for the design and color for their palette. They also knew they wanted to title the painting "Salvation". There was more though..... and I quote with permission from Monica.

"-As the tornado approached, nine of us huddled together in our tiny laundry room located in the center of our home. Those 9 were: my family (me, my husband, and our 3 children), my in-laws, my brother-in-law, and a friend. One idea... perhaps incorporating something about the number 9 into the painting in some subtle way... maybe using one of the colors in 9 places... or perhaps using one shade 3 times to represent the kids and another shade 6 times to represent the adults. (??) Not a requirement... just an idea.

-As we all took shelter and the storm began to intensify, my daughter and I were praying aloud asking for God's protection and for angels to surround us. A little over half way through the tornado, after much of the front of our house was crushed and/or blown away, the roof was ripped off above us. At that terrifying point, as debris began to fall in on us, I truly gave up every shred of hope for our lives. My humanness was terrified beyond description, but much to my surprise, my spirit was calm and at peace. God felt just a breath away... it was an almost intoxicating, warm, and awe-filled moment. As I waited for the final blow that was sure to kill us all, my thought was... "Just a moment more, and I will finally see the face of Jesus."

-I now have a whole new understanding of and appreciation for Psalm 91:9-16. (note that last word..."Salvation") :) -Monica

Right from the start nine squares began emerging as I was painting and I knew these were to represent them in the center of the chaos. As I continued, those nine areas became less defined and I was so desperately trying to pull them back out as I was finishing the painting. It was at this point that my husband walked into the studio saw what I was doing and said, "But look, there is a nine right there". He was pointing to an area in the center of the chaos that has a gold circle and it is subtle!

With the completion of this painting there was much symbolism for me as well. But, never did I see what this family and friends saw when I sent them the completed image for approval. They loved it just as it was and told me how they could see the face of Jesus in it. I have inserted the image that Monica sent with the superimposed faced, to help me see where they saw this.

May 2011 Tornadoes Second Deadliest Month

The first 3 weeks May 2011 Tornadoes were not too bad. However, that all changed on May 21, 2011 and lasted until May 26, 2011! The worst and deadliest tornado during this time ocurred in Joplin, Missouri on May 22, 2011. It was classified as an EF-5 Tornado.

The Joplin, Missouri Tornado killed 141 people and injured 900. It is recorded as the deadliest tornado in the US since April 9, 1947 (Woodward Oklahoma Tornado killed 181). Massive destruction tore apart large parts of the city of Joplin.

The painting reminds me of one I completed a few months ago titled "Chateau", you can see it here. It was purchased very quickly and if you really liked "Chateau", then now is your chance to grab a "Bordeaux"!

I worked on "Bordeaux" over many sessions. Struggling to bring it to that point when you just know that the piece is finished. Sometimes in painting it all comes together rather quickly and at other times, as with this one, it's just a matter of not giving up or settling for something that would be far less. Winning through persistence!

It also can be a matter of perception. I got to the point, after having spent so much time with it, that I had lost my objectivity. I needed to step away and spend some time elsewhere, in order to regain my perception. Photographing "Bordeaux" to capture it as true to real life as possible was also a challenge. Those thoughts were all about yesterday .... and today ...... I LOVE it!!!

Making my list and checking it twice!! This is truly an exciting and magical time of year. We had Penny over yesterday for the day and she helped to decorate, un-decorate, then decorate and finally left the tree half bare! But the joy and twinkle in her eyes with the decorations was priceless. At age two she is beginning to pick up the fun fantasies of the season and talking about Santa. Lots of colors and patterns!! My husband will often ask me "what were you thinking about as you painted this?", as a way to get an idea for titles. Well, with this one I thought I about a high school art student I had had when I first began teaching. Lindsay was an extremely artistically talented student that used all her electives on art classes. Not only was she admired by the student body for her work but she also known for her eccentric and creative wardrobe. Lindsay once told me, "If you put enough colors and patterns together, they'll match". .... and that is what I was thinking as I worked on this painting as it was difficult to work with so much and pull it together. Love it!!

I found the title to be much more fitting for this painting than it was for the original. Guess, it was just meant to be taken to this level.. I don't like to change the titles when I revisit a painting because I would have to scratch it off the back of the canvas and just don't want it to look messy. So, I went back and checked out the definition for Affuence----A great quantity; an abundance. Most fitting...don't you think!

Home Sweet Home.... "Callera" Contemporary Abstract Painting by Missouri Artist Elizabeth Chapman

I just posted this one several weeks ago and it was seen online and purchased here locally in Springfield, Mo. When I posted it earlier I had written about the technique I had used in painting this one and if you would like you can read about it here. As I am posting it again today, I would like to share with you the completion of a painting.

As I have shared before from beginning to end the process of creating a painting is I believe an act of faith. In the beginning I really don't have much of an idea other than perhaps a feeling of what I want to do, except when working with a commission. The first colors and marks go on and from there one thing begins to lead to the next until the painting is finished. And so I've been asked "when do you know it is finished?" Well, most usually this is when I just don't feel as if I can add one more brushstroke...sometimes it can be months later and I realize I really wasn't finished with that one.

But, it is really finished and the cycle is completed when the painting has found it's home. This too, I believe is a part of the process and of believing that there will be a place were it is much loved. I haven't always had the opportunity to see this final phase when the painting has been sold by a third party. So...here is the story:

I had been out to this family's beautiful home a few years ago and we had worked on a wall with another painting, colors, sizing, etc, but nothing was really just right. I had thought of this wall from time to time and had wondered how it had worked out. I posted this painting "Callera" just a few weeks ago and when Gina saw it online, she absolutely LOVED it! She contacted me wondering if I might come back with this painting and see how it might work. When we arrived Gina's eyes followed the painting in! I learned it was the very same wall we had worked with a few years ago. But when my husband held the painting up on the wall above the couch we could instantly see that is was just a bit small for the size of the space. I could just read the disappointment Gina was going through and I so wanted something to work out for them. This is a very special room in which the family will all be together for Christmas.

So we began brainstorming ideas...sometimes it pays to think outside the box! Does a painting always have to be centered above a couch? Between the four of us we came up with an idea of moving some shelves around and hanging the painting on the adjacent wall, as this was a wraparound sectional couch. We all believed that this was the best option. The painting would also now first be seen when walking into this room and from the kitchen as well. I offered to leave the painting, as there was going to be some work in moving the shelves around. Gina was hugging me on the way out!!

Well, the next day Gina called..."Perfect, we absolutely love the arrangement. We're keeping the painting!", she said. The painting's process was completed. Painting and being involved in the creative process brings me much joy, seeing this same joy in others completes the process.

These small abstract paintings are really quite challenging. I LOVE this one and it has me inspired to do a larger red painting. I had to work with adjusting this image to get it close to the appearance of the real painting, as the reds can be difficult to photograph. The bottom left hand corner is a bit red orange, but other than that it is very close. The golds are metallic paints. Enjoy!

I've been working on a large commissioned painting (36" x 48") and can't wait to share it with you. Once I get it photographed I will send the image to the client for any final adjustments and then.... I thought about photographing it as I went through the various stages, but then that thought made me feel as if I was being watched. I guess I'm a secret painter! Perhaps one of these days I'll get up the nerve and do a video?! Anyway there is a beautiful story that goes with it and I really can't wait to share it. The title of the painting was picked out by the client "Salvation"before it was even begun. So...there's a little preview!

These little ones ("Edifice" is posted today) are wonderful exercises for me on composition. I've been going back and revisiting some of the older small paintings that just quite didn't make it. They are wonderful repaints for the texture that is already there. Sometimes parts of them are saved through and sometimes they become a total remake. At any rate, the older painting becomes a reference point to begin with and the new painting would never be what it is without this older part. A wonderful chinese meal was prepared by my cousin, Chef David, this last weekend. This plate is called a Pu Pu platter, which includes egg rolls, pot stickers, grilled beef and chicken, crab rangoon and marinated pineapple wraps. Then we each had a vegetable stir fry prepared with our choice of one of his five homemade sauces which included a peanut, sesame, orange teriyaki, pineapple sweet and sour and also a ginger. Preparations for this meal took three days! Well worth it, as it was all so delicious. Our meal was topped off with a Cranberry/Apple pie and ice cream that our daughter Emma brought over........it can be seen on "Food Coma", click here. yum, yum!!

So what does all this have to do with the painting? They were all created around the same time, both so luscious and to be enjoyed! Lately, I've been back to painting floral abstracts and will add them to my web gallery as they have been completed.

Brushes used with this painting: The actual mixing of colors happens for me on the canvas itself as I push paint around. I used a large round brush, a roller, an old stiff brush (love these!) and at one point my eye caught a piece of cardboard sitting on the table. Can you tell where I used it? Lastly, a fine brush was used for detailing the straight and curved lines.

Celebrate the light with this large bright and bold colored abstract!

Here's the process that I used for this painting: I first began by texturing the surface of the canvas with modeling paste and a palette knife. Next I used a large round brush and began layering various yellows into the upper part of the canvas. A palette knife was used to knock in the darker colors on the left side. I then felt like there were too many hard edges and so used a stiff brush and went in and blended and softened up edges. The whites in the middle were a mixture of colors I was using plus white. The challenge came in finishing this painting as I left it at this stage for several days and then came in to work the bottom right side, matching it up to the left. I began again with the top right hand color, with another layering of the yellows and whites and worked down. Once again, I used a palette knife for the blues, blending and softening the hard edges into the background. Also, took some of these over into the left side. The very last thing that I did (and you might have to click on image to get a close up) was I added some vertical lines.

Some days are spent more on the computer than on painting and is a very necessary part of being an Artist today. Been BISEE this week as Penny would say! We've been taking care of our grand-daughter since Wednesday as her parents went to Austin, Texas for a few days. This one was painted just before she came to stay with us, as there is no way I could have done it while she was here. Everyday was another day of painting, drawing, eating, Dora, playing outside, napping, sleeping, drawing, painting and then the cycle began all over. She woke up one morning, her eyes great big as she exclaimed "draw"! Penny is now almost 2 years old and I don't think I have ever seen anyone who loves to draw and paint as much as she does. Even outside she picked up rocks to draw with on the sidewalk! It truly is one thing after another...and she'll tell you that she's busy!!

So, she left today....and I already miss her so much! This painting reminds me of the way I spent my time with Penny over the last few days....a whirl....from one swirl to the next! A Beautiful Mess!! ..... did you ever hear your art teacher use the term a "happy accident".... well this is a real good example of one. I had gone into my studio late in the evening just to tidy up a bit and had picked up a jar of Quinacridone Red by it's lid. Well, the lid was not on good enough and I ended up spilling nearly a third of this full jar on the table. My first thought as I watched the paint beginning to spread out on the table, was oh no these paints are way to expensive. Then I quickly grabbed some paper near by and scooped up paint to put back into the jar. Even at this there was still a large puddle that I knew I was not going to be able to recover. So....I quickly reach for a canvas that I had recently gessoed with black and used it to salvage the rest of the paint. The first stroke was on the canvas....

From here I had no idea, just knew I needed to do something so I began using a circular motion with a brush in the red. Grabbed a palette knife and started working with some greens. Still not knowing, but believing something would begin to emerge continued on. Started adding some yellows and pinks to the red when it was at this point that I saw the roses emerging. Yea, I'm feeling relieved as I now feel sure I will get a painting out of this mess.....and it will be beautiful!

So what about a title? Well.....to finish the story my husband (as most of you know who have followed my blog, titles my work) walks in my studio and sees the new painting on the easel. He says..."it's beautiful, three roses" and leaves. A few minutes later he comes back to show me this YouTube clip of a band from the 70's "America", and a song they wrote titled "Three Roses". Just having a lot of fun as I got totally absorbed with color. I've been told that my work involves a complexity of layers. I really can not explain how it is that I do it, other than I usually stick with a painting until I reach that point that I feel there is completion. Larger paintings can be exhausting. Sometimes I may stop too soon and then there are times where perhaps it's been over done. I am never satisfied with either one of those. I posted this second painting so you could see where I had stopped, thinking I was done. As I was giving a lesson, (sorry, Dina) my eyes kept going back to it....searching, searching. Just needed a little something, but what? After having taken a photograph of it, I was able to see the change I wanted to make. So back into it I went!

For the love of painting. There's a newness and a freshness to this painting that I believe comes from my resolving to paint simply because it is a part of my life. The process of creating brings me joy and knowing that I am speaking a language that will perhaps bring a glimpse of light to someone else is an even greater joy.

The inspiration for this floral painting came from a bouquet on a Southern Living magazine cover that had caught my eye. This painting began as a horizontal, but it wasn't long before I had departed and was in the abstract realm. I turn my paintings a lot as I am working and it was with this vertical perspective that I began seeing this smaller floral bouquet. Guess it was just meant to be a floral!

Empty nest isn't so bad!!....as we are going through our house cleaning, rearranging and decorating. Just finished hanging some of my own paintings!! If I can get some good indoor lighting I'll take some pics and share them. This painting is much like "New Song" with a lighter palette. As I've posted before I am experimenting with various other color schemes.

With all the rearranging, my studio is presently full of the larger abstracts, some of which I just recently brought home from a local gallery. I'll be working this week with finding storage places. I have not had much time lately to paint as we've been busy with helping our kids move and my parents have also been needing help. We are now officially empty nesters!! Not quite sure about it all....as I loved having a full house. But....seasons change and these are necessary for growth.

The darkest areas are an alizarin crimson (dark red) which are appearing more as a brown.

Another gessoed over painting.... a new painting over an older one. If you care to look and see what it was before I also kept the title the same with this and could be found in the search. Amazingly, the title not only suits this one but is perfect. Nuance: subtle changes in tone. Perhaps, the previous painting was just a stepping stone to this one. Thank you, Bren for that insight! This one will now need to be wired to hang as a vertical.

As I posted previously I have been feeling a need to change things up. I've been feeling lately as if I was stuck in a rut....and so I am consciously attempting to step outside my box and try working with various other color palettes and approaches. Trusting in the process is probably one of the most important things I have learned as a painter. Today, I had a friend/ex-colleague/student over for her Tuesday art lesson. I am smiling as I am writing this post, because Dina and I worked side by side as art teachers just a few years ago.... and now she has asked me to give her art lessons. We are having a lot of fun.... but are we getting anything done?! Why... yes... She has a beautiful fall landscape painting in which she is building layers up and she worked with a palette knife. Dina, like so many others already has everything she needs in herself in order to be an excellent artist. I am simply helping her to see that. As we were chatting and exchanging ideas while she painted, she said "You just have to trust in the process". Bingo!!

This is a very large painting (4ft. x 5ft.) which hung on my studio wall as a blank canvas for a while before I was ready to approach it. The process for this painting actually began long before I put the first stroke down, as I tossed many ideas around. When I did begin, it was with a palette knife building and layering colors just to see...and well one thing led to another and then the next and...
I believe the longer you paint the more relaxed and easier it is to trust in the process!

It isn't over yet as the next step is now the selling of the painting! Where it will go...I have no idea...all I can do is trust this part of the process as well.

a rhapsody....is the direction that this painting took! It actually began in a totally different note with a much quieter softer tone. There were several stages were it appeared finished, but yet it seemed to continue to challenge me. So on I went... into a full explosion of color and movement and I love it!! Seems to be playing it's own symphony.

My husband who often helps with the titles of the paintings will ask me what I was thinking while I was painting. Most photographed painting ever ........ This one has gone through many stages this week. I often photograph when I'm at a point where I feel the painting is completed. There is something about seeing the image on a flat screen that helps to see it differently and confirm my decision. But this one, even with the final version, I had to continue to photograph to get just the right amount of light. There are metallic golds and coppers in it, which could have contributed to the difficulty in photographing it. Kind of ironic because as I was in the last stages with this work, it was my desire that the painting would speak about the light overtaking the darkness. This last picture is very close to the original painting. Click on image to get a closer look at the metallics and textures.

What does it remind me of? What was I thinking as I was painting this one? These are questions I often get asked by Donnie, who I call "title man", my husband who titles nearly everyone of the paintings. Well, that also went through many stages and this one actually got titled before it was completed. In the end it reminds me of Christmas ........ and I know that is a little strange as this is July and there are heat advisories of 100 plus degree weather here. As I was finishing up, I thought of this painting as a story that was being told ...... the light of angels from above rejoicing and singing.

To revisit a painting is to rework it long after it has been declared as finished or maybe even exhibited, as this one has been. The before image of this painting is from 2009 and I had really enjoyed the simplicity of the design from the beginning. As time went on, I would look at it and feel as if perhaps others couldn't see what I was seeing, thinking maybe I had just stopped to soon. So, I went back in using the original design as the foundation to elaborate on with the intention of keeping it much the same. Well, one thing led to the next, then another and so continued.

I did a little research on this topic, because I was wondering about how to sign a painting like this on the back. Is it o.k. to change the title? Do you list it as revisited? Well, what I found was interesting. I learned that there have been many well known artists that have had exhibits showcasing only their paintings that have been revisited. I don't think I'll ever be a famous artist or have enough of these for one single show, but I will sign the back as revisited with the year and keep the original title.

TRAVERSE: to pass or move along, to go over or go across, etc. This painting went through many sessions and felt as if it was finished many times, but there was always something that just wasn't quite there yet, so I kept after it. Then came that moment of crossing over, it was done and I knew it.

Peace, Love and Understanding.....as I posted several weeks ago, I began painting the heart abstract paintings again after an inquiry I received from my web gallery. This person had gone through my archive (a portfolio of my sold work) and had found these heart paintings. They had spoken so much

to her. She told me as a child she had always loved heart paintings in which the hearts were hidden.

It was such a sweet email that touched my heart and spoke to me about the need to continue these.

So, I made this goal that I would paint one per week. Let's see, by next Valentine's Day there will be

.......... I'll let you do the math. Maybe more than anything else is how they are speaking to me.

I now look forward to this special time of creating a new heart and seeing what it has to say!

Michael Buble...OMG! My son, Doren bought us tickets on mother's day for his concert. We went to this event here in Springfield, Mo. on Tuesday night. Incredible....So many new ideas came from this. There's got to be a "Crazy Love" heart to come from this!!

Experimenting with this small painting before a larger one in which I've been thinking about limiting myself to just black and white. Working with only black and white is harder than it appears, at least for me. As you can see with this little one, color made it's way in. I painted this one after a larger one that I just completed "Traverse" which will be posted next week....or can be seen here. ....in a similar palette. I feel as if I've been working a lot with the same color palette and maybe the limitation would be a cleansing, so to speak and move me a long to working with other color schemes. We'll see...

Going with the flow....just feeling lately like I wanted to work with a different medium. So, I began with watercolors, another medium that I am much familiar with, transparently layering colors. Later I began adding gouache which is a more opaque medium. If you've never worked with them, they are kinda like the oil paints of watercolors. They are thicker, easier to blend with and you begin to achieve depth must faster. Once, I had these in I switched off to my acrylics to add those final touches, the details the jewels. Was this all planned? .... oh no, never... just a matter of going with the flow!

Making a Living. Just read this article and it has most definitely given me a different perspective on the term "making a living". Once again, I believe we have it all turned around backwards. My son-in-law Jeremy Larson had posted a link to it on his blog, now one of my favorite daily reads! The article is by Jon Foreman lead singer for a band called Switchfoot. Click here to read. After reading this article it reminded of some lyrics that John Lennon wrote for his son Sean off the "Double Fantasy" album. It has stuck with me over the years. So what does this have to do with this painting? Well, I believe after you read the article you will see! This is a painting that I revisted lately and contemplated which way to display it. After much rotation, I have settled on this view where I can see a figure dancing. Maybe I'm the only one to see this...but I believe that even in these times that we are all presently living in there must be a way to find joy in the simple things, thankfulness for what we do have and a reason to dance and give praise for it all.

Contemporary Expressionistic Palette Knife Painting

Palette knife painting with metallic copper, silver and gold intertwined with color. My first palette knife painting was one titled "Indian Summer" out of which the opportunity to do a commissioned painting "Better Two" emerged (two large 24" x 60" panels). Since then there has been Rich, Mestizo, Curtain Call, Iridescent, Fancy Flight, Italia, Rainy Day Cafe and now "New Dawn". These are done with a palette knife, paint straight from the tube with the mixing of colors done on the canvas. The metallics may be hard to see as they do not photograph well, but this painting is gorgeous in the bright light.

New Dawn reminds me of the newness or freshness that comes with each morning. Another day is a gift to be treasured and enjoyed. Like a city on a hill as the sun is coming up, it begins to bring light to one side of the hill and as it spreads it brings light and warmth to the coolness and darkness of night ...and with it hope.

Truelove is a continuation of the heart series that I began a few years ago. It began with a couple of heart paintings for a local fundraiser, "Heart for the Arts" here in Springfield, Mo. I so enjoyed painting these that I decided I would continue the series (these can be seen in the Archives). Well, somewhere along the line I forgot them. I had actually been thinking about them again as I was reading a book "Recover Your Good Heart" by Jim Robbins. Well, it wasn't until here recently when I had an inquiry about the hearts that I realized it's time to paint these again. Thank you, Natalie! So, I painted this heart in response to that inquiry and have opened up a heart category (there's only one heart so far!) again in my web gallery. If you haven't visited my web gallery in a while (or maybe never have) I invite you to do that, as I have made changes over the last few weeks.

It is my goal to begin adding a new heart to this series as a weekend post. We'll see.... there is so much that can be and has been written about love. That is what I think of when I see a heart. It speaks differently to the heart of each person. As an abstract painter I am seeking and searching for that moment when a work shows me there is beauty here. This is a beauty that reveals the glory of God.

A reflection. God is love and it is through him that all that is true, beautiful and good is seen.

This particular heart makes me think of the intertwining of two hearts as they become one. Perhaps it's because of the marriage of our oldest daughter Elsie, that I've been thinking about this lately. As I witnessed the exchanging of their vows and the commitment in their hearts that they were making for each other on their wedding day, I thought of how beautiful and happy they were together.

Truelove will watch over them, take care of them and will grow over the years to come.

Busy, busy, busy this week as I am working with some local events here in Springfield, Mo. It began last Friday night with the Springfield Arts Council Members show where I entered "Quantum" this year and then I spent several hours at Obelisk Home where my work is represented locally. Thursday night I am going to be doing a palette knife painting demonstration for the Flights of Fancy Celebration at the Springfield/Branson airport. Being my second year to do this I'm feeling a little less apprehensive than last year. I chose to do a palette knife painting because this way I can work straight from the tubes to the palette knife, mixing on the canvas and using a towel to wipe my knife with no water needed. This event involves many of the local performing arts coming together. Last year a painting titled "Fancy Flight" emerged from this event. Lastly this week, there will be an opening reception that we will attend on Friday night for Art for Haiti and the event will be continuing throughout the month of June.

A few years ago I began posting and blogging my new adventure in pursuing this journey of not only creating art but learning the business aspects as well. I was very much inspired by the success my daughter Elsie Larson of A Beautiful Mess was having with her online business. So, I spent my whole first summer learning all the technical stuff in order to being able to create my own online presence. Yes, truly it took a little longer than usual to become tech savy but you see and I really hate to admit this, it was an age thing for me (I'm from the generation of writing letters to each other..lol). I began to realize that in spending so much time on line I was overlooking the area in which I live. I was beginning to understand that being involved in my community is also an important part of being an artist. We are all placed in our local communities for a reason. For me some of those reasons are to give back, to share, to establish relationships and just my feeling of fulfillment. I also enjoy very much being involved in the much larger community of the world we live in on the internet. Just a matter of striking a balance!

This little abstract painting was created about the same time as I was finishing up "Adora", see a couple of post back and so there is a similarity in the color palette. It is an older painting that I have revisited.

This painting was in my first show with Obelisk Home. When our daughter Elsie saw it she asked me for it as a wedding present. I was honored and happy to give her a painting of her choosing. It now hangs in the newlyweds home with their vintage decor. They were married May 15th. I am posting their wedding video for your enjoyment. It was all so magical and full of love. My favorite part was seeing the happiness in their faces. Why do I paint? I will confess there are days when I feel as if maybe I should just give it up. Discouragement comes in many different forms, but then I find myself in the studio painting again!

So, at the end of the day I say that I paint because I love it. I love the whole creative process of playing, experimenting and I love color! It is my passion, my expression, my gift and I am thankful.

Where do all these paintings go? Fortunately many of them have sold. Presently, some of them are being shown here in Springfield, Mo. at Obelisk Home, the premier showcase gallery and then a few of them are at home. It has been interesting over the years to see how and when each one finds it's place. One thing I have learned is to have faith. I am not always sure when I am painting where the work will go or who will purchase it or even if it will ever be owned by an other, but I can't think about this while working. You have to follow your heart as you create and trust that it will serve it's purpose in time.

Of course, I would like for my paintings to sell fresh off the easel! What artist wouldn't?!

This morning I just had to smile as I read a promotional email for a local event that I have submitted three of my older paintings to "Tropical Roots", "Deep" and "Fiesta". Parlour: originally, a formal sitting room, any living room, a semi-private sitting room in a hotel, a business establishment, etc..,

This reminds me of a room that is full of life. A place where one can spend time enjoying the company of family and others. It makes me think of a room in our house that was purposely set aside for this exact purpose. Years ago we decided that we would remove the t.v. from our upstairs living room in order to have a place to visit with less distractions. We all have our own individual spaces but this place is special as it is our gathering spot.

Interesting how this painting came about as I painted the bottom side up and then turned it over and saw this scene. I love the color scheme and loose gestural lines and I'm really considering it for a large painting which would be titled "The Parlour" (thanks Donnie!) Lately, I have been feeling so inspired. Someone once asked me "how do you know when your inspired?' I had to think about this one for a bit. The answer I came up with is..."it's kinda like when you begin feeling hungry and you know you need to eat" Don't know how else to explain it. More playing and experimenting, perhaps even some figurative and floral abstracts.....we'll see......

I'm sorry I haven't written much lately... a new goal of mine is to work on my blog and write more. So here it is.... first of all I hope you enjoy the painting!!

I've been reading a book lately in preparation for an art teaching position that I have accepted for next fall. I will be working at a homeschool co-op on Monday afternoons. This will be my first classroom situation since having resigned as a public school teacher three years ago. Actually, never thought I would be interested again in this sort of a position but in all honestly I was attracted to the thought of not grading and working with students that have been taught respect. I do feel like this is the right move for me and I am excited about it.

So, I picked up this book that caught my interest and it has been feeding right into thoughts and questions that I have had over the years. One big question that I've always had as a teacher is the creative process itself and how to or if it could really be taught. This book has been confirming an idea that I've had all long and that is....should art work be graded or assesed. The grading or assessing of art puts the emphasize on the end product rather than on the process which is the most important element to creating. In other words, it damages creativity which is an intelligent form of thinking that applies to not only the visual arts but across the board to many other areas of education as well. I am now learning that I need to unteach techniques and rely more on allowing their natural intuitions to flow. (duh, this is what I use when painting!) Techniques such as perspective, texture, etc... will naturally be learned if children are allowed to experiment and invent on their own. This has opened up much thinking for me on this topic not only as a teacher, but as an artist as well. I am looking forward to nurturing the creative process without grades. If your interested in this topic you might like this book. I believe it is a good read for art teachers, artists and parents. Painting titles are often times the most difficult part for me to decide on when completing a work. My husband is the one who works with me on this. He will ask me something like what was I thinking or what does this painting remind you of in order to gather some of my insights. Out of my responses, which can be rather lengthy, he will pick out one word....and there it is the perfect title. I am always so impressed because I could be working for days just coming up with a simple title.

But....this title "New Song" is mine. Creative blocks happen for a lot of different reasons, so I've heard. Lately, I've been there. It kinda feels like you've lost your ability to create. One theory I've heard that it is a normal process needed in order to proceed to another level. Another one is that creativity needs time to rest. I've had these before and so I've learned to slow down and wait. Just don't stop or give up.

This time....I just decided I wanted to have fun!! and play!! With this painting I believe I've learned that it's all to easy to become too serious and lose the joy in painting. The title came to my mind as I thought about how God's mercies are new each day and how he puts a new song or a fresh look in our hearts.

Decision Finalized. O.K., so I have decided Quantum would hang best as a vertical. It will be wired so that it could be hung as a horizontal or a vertical. If you get tired of it one way just turn it and you've got a whole new painting!! Also, I re-photographed this painting today as I just wasn't happy with the lighting.

Uncertainty is the word that describes my state of mind as I worked many, many sessions on this painting. I can't even remember how I started it. Much of the time I felt as if I was stuck but continued to challenge myself to the point of completion. Here it is....hope you enjoy it!!

Busy working on another larger painting...I enjoy going back and working on the smaller formats from time to time. This one has lots of texture!

This week we had the pleasure to meet Bruce Docker and his wonderful wife Judy. We have really enjoyed viewing his paintings on the Missouri Daily Painters and my husband has especially been drawn to his woodcuts. We drove out to his home to pick these up and had the opportunity to meet and encourage a local artist. These are a couple of mugs with his woodcut prints that we purchased from him. Axiom: a self evident truth that needs no explanation.

I believe that the creative nature of art speaks it's message to the viewer. It's seems to give that which is needed in order to draw one closer to the Maker of life. I always love hearing about these personal insights from others. It works in this same manner for the artist as well.

There were so many beautiful areas that emerged as I was painting this week on this canvas. I knew though that I would not be able to keep them all and have a unified work. As I was contemplating which areas would need to be covered in order to pull this together it struck me. A sacrifice would need to be made. Isn't this the way the Creator works. Sometimes there are things that seem so beautiful and wonderful to us but yet don't last or are taken away and we wonder why. Could it be that this is done in order to complete the work of the bigger picture.

Is not that what God did in sacrificing his Son in order to provide the way.

I've been experimenting lately with mixing and painting with neutrals and beginning the abstracts with a sketch taken from small thumbnail designs that I've done. Do I always stick with this preliminary plan....mostly not...but it is a place to begin. Decided to add color which turned out to be a little harder than it appears in finding a balance.

I had my little helper working with me on this painting! That is our 14 month grand daughter who is currently living with us. If you click on the painting for a larger view you will see her work on the bottom right hand corner. I sat her down with a crayons, markers and paper to play, which I knew would buy me at least 20 minutes while I textured the canvas and laid in a basic structure. It was the cutest thing ever when after her attention span with the crayons had ended she proceeded to imitate me with her orange marker on the canvas and even created some texture. And then........here's the cutest part.......she was sooooo proud of her self. She would continually go back to show others her work.

I just could not bring myself to cover this up....and it has been incorporated into the design. I will lastly place my initials here before sealing it. Thank goodness I'm into abstracts!!!

This commission was requested by a client that asked for a painting of one of her mother's favorite flowers. She asked that it be done in a similar manner to several of my other abstracted florals, En Masse, Solace and Mountain Flower. Click on each individual flower to see or click here to see all of them. The first painting that I did turned out be a bit more on the realistic side (scroll down), but still a very good painting. She was so very sweet about it, but I could tell it wasn't quite where she expected it to be. So.... I suggested another one be painted...much more paint, texture and COLOR! "Love Bloom"....and she LOVES it!!!!
