Fresh off the easel...

Jazzing it up here!  Listening to jazz music while painting this piece. It began with a gesturally type of flow that I fell in love with too soon as the painting wasn't complete.  After much contemplation I continued and I was very happy to have been able to retain much of the original feeling.

I love this painting! Definitely in the modern abstract camp. This was meant to be a small piece on paper to which I would use to learn mounting on cradle board, which is basically a wood panel.  You can check it out here which is the same place that I have been purchasing my canvases from for years. It was relatively easy, easy to do. You want to make sure that you varnish your painting before mounting and paint the sides of the cradle board. In this case it is a 1 3/4" depth side that I painted black. Then simply cover (don't be stingy here) the back with a mixed media paste and attach to board.  Use a printmaker's roller on the front being sure to press down firmly flattening and wiping excess media from sides.  Don't worry, it all dries clear. When dry I coated the top and sides with an additional coat of varnish. That's it!   Turned out beautifully and plan on mounting more of my abstracts this way. So easy with a very professional finish.

Music has always very much inspired and  influenced  my painting style.  I respond by what I hear/feel with color and movement on the canvas.  Not always do I play music as I paint, sometimes I feel I need those moments of being still.  Locally, I have been invited to be one of six artist that will be on stage as the Springfield Symphony performs.  First time to be done as a collaboration between the visual arts and music, entitled "Music for my eyes".  For the most part visual artists do there work solo in their studios and pretty much like it that way. This will be an opportunity for the audience to be able to participate in that process of translating music into a visual art.

Performance will be at the Juanita K. Hammons Hall for the Performing Arts in Springfield, Mo.

Modern Expressionistic Abstract "Wit" by Elizabeth Chapman

Wit

ORIGINAL 2016

Speaking today for the Studio55 club in my hometown of Springfield, Mo.  The topic will be on marketing.  As I'm going over my notes this morning and thinking about how to open this presentation,  I'm reminded of those very first years as I was building my business.  Those initial ideas came from a generation of younger entrepreneurs that more than likely because of our weakened economy began seeing the importance of working for yourself. They have been successful and are everywhere today. They are a huge inspiration!!  In my own family I have seen this with my daughters owners of A Beautiful Mess.  There story can be read on there blog: HERE I happen to be very proud of them and I think you will enjoy their wit!

Another one and oh there's more! This one has a high horizontal landscapish compositional feel to it. If your an abstract artist composition is everything. It would probably be much easier if I chose a composition before I began.  But, typically I don't.  I just begin, with that beginning leading to the next idea and so on I go until I feel it's complete.  I'm going with the flow of the painting, but at the same time I am always thinking about how to pull a painting off compositionally.  Most of the time it works. Now and again there is a struggle that occurs with a painting. Nine times out of 10 it's not working because there is a design problem. So, that's when I go back to those composition rules/guidelines to figure out how to make it work.  Yes, that's right...it would be much easier to begin with them! The beauty of this small abstract is all the layering that occurred as I was finding my way to a design.

Currently releasing these small abstracts to my Etsy store; HERE

These are the newest mini abstract paintings (8" x 8") that I have been working on during the latter part of 2015. Oddly enough, they are much more difficult for me than working on a large canvas.  This is the first time that I have worked on so many of them at the same time. Ordinarily, I would always begin and finish one at a time.  I began hanging them on this wall (minus four others that are on another wall) as way to see them all at once. In many ways this gave me the same perspective that I have as I'm working on a large canvas. So many of the times it can be a difficult thing to walk away from a canvas when you don't know how it's going to finish.  Hanging these on the wall was a lot like standing back and critiquing a large canvas. When I would walk back in on these there would be one that caught my eye telling me the next step. Often times I would have two I worked on at a time and then back up to the wall they would go.  Maybe done, maybe not...it wasn't until I could look at the wall and not see any changes that they felt completed.

The plan is to continue, only this time I'm going to work them alongside the larger pieces that I typically paint. These are a good way of continuing to work through times of creative healing or times that are going to change your working time and space, such as vacations, holidays, etc..,  I feel like I nurtured each one of these into their own special piece.  These paintings could be purchased to hang as singles, pairs or collected for a wall display. The price for the new minis are being listed at $100 with the price of the older ones staying the same, $85 in case you should wonder as to why the difference.  This does include shipping to any where in the continental US.

I've been so waiting to get these out!

May 2016 be a joyful year!
