A Bit of Red Abstract Painting "Fabulosity" by Elizabeth Chapman

Fabulosity
Acrylic on 8" x 8" x 3/4" wrap canvas
Available $85

SOLD
Really contemplated being finished as I was attracted to less with this painting.  I loved the subtle value changes in the off whites and reds. Especially loved the coral on the red and bit of red in the dark.   In the end, I decided to go with it. What do you think?

Dog portraits "Dapper Dolly and "Steely Steve" by Elizabeth Chapman

Dapper Dolly

Steely Steve
Acrylic on 8" x 8" x 3/4" canvas

I had to wait to share these as they were Christmas presents to our son-in-laws, Jeremy and Trey.  I chose two images from their instagram photos that felt captured the personality of their dogs.  Really wasn't for sure that I would be able to pull them off.  A rough sketch, outlining and placing them was the first step.  Eyes were next, and worked my way out from there.  Smiles came as I began to see the faces and personalities emerge.   Lots of fun to paint and give away..and it's only just begun!

Small abstract painting "Tiptop" by Elizabeth Chapman

Tiptop
Acrylic on 8" x 8" x 3/4" canvas

SOLD

Making my list and checking it twice!  Actually, I have gotten all my holiday shopping done and am contemplating the ordering of new paints.  I've always bought my titanium white in a large 32oz jar as I use a lot of it. Recently, I have decided to purchase the basic colors in this size as well. Cadmium Yellow Med.  in a large jar was an easy decision as it gets mixed into nearly every color. Which red though? Should I get the Cadmium Red Dark and add yellow for my lighter reds? or should I get the Cadmium Red Medium  and add Allizarin  or Ultramarine Blue for the darker Reds? or maybe I should go with one of each in the smaller jars for now until I know for sure. Ultramarine will be my choice for blue. Anyway, I'm working on limiting my colors which would involve more mixing, but would also be more economical.  I use heavy body Golden Acrylic paints which I order from Jerry's Artarama or Dick Blick is another online source.

This small abstract painting can be purchased from my Etsy Shop: here. , where I have been listing and selling (yay!... thank you), as they are completed.  Two large 40" x 40" and twenty-eight more 8" x 8" canvases are on there way! Excited for the fresh start of a new year in the studio!!

Avola, Red Abstract Contemporary Painting by Elizabeth Chapman

Avola
Acrylic on 24" x 24" x1.5" canvas
$450 includes free shipping

Available

I love working with reds, but also find it a difficult color to balance and especially to photograph.  Truth be known, this is/was a painting from 2011 that I have updated.  More like total re-do as I gessoed over the whole painting. It's not such a bad thing. I love the texture that a previous painting brings to a new work.  Also, you don't have the intimidation of a white canvas to begin with as shapes and colors can be seen through the gesso. This inspires ideas, a fresh start and of course when working intuitively one idea leads to the next. Another adventure!

The story behind this one is interesting.  A simple line design with charcoal was the first step. Then the pouring of liquid acrylic paints on the canvas as you can see with the runs. A layering process of pouring white and blending with a brush occurred next. All of this was to be the undercoat. In the center I worked with heavy body acrylic paints and a palette knife. I left the painting like this with the intention of continuing the palette knife process later.  The next day when I walked into the studio to work, it took my breath away. I really, really liked it as it is and decided to leave it alone for a bit. Well, with the confirmation of several family members loving it as well, I decided to call it finished.

This isn't a bad picture of it at all, but in real it just seems to glow. The contrast between the two textures created by the liquid acrylics and the heavy body acrylics is BEAUTIFUL.  When do you decide a painting is finished? What do you think?

As I was beginning to feel finished with this painting and stood back for some perspective, my reaction was "OH what a delight!" I knew then, that it was completed.  The title has been derived from the word delight.  A feast of color!
