Piquant Contemporary Abstract Painting by Elizabeth Chapman

Piquant
Acrylic on 8" x 8" canvas

Sold

This little abstract is from a way back, but it recently had the honors of being included in a book written by Carol Marine entitled "Daily Painting".  I have always admired Carol's paintings for the realism they portray. At the same time their is a looseness that keeps my eye interested and moving through the shapes of color. You can check out her paintings on her blog: HERE.   You'll find her book "Daily Painting" there to purchase too.

If your new to painting, this book will help you to understand the necessity of daily painting.  I love the way she has taken and simplified an understanding of composition and working with a limited palette.  If your just beginning and can't afford to go out an buy a full range of colors. Don't need to. All the colors are mixed from red, yellow, blue and white added for tints. Black can be used to darken a color, but it really gives the darks more vibrancy if you mix your own.  Basically, with just a few colors and small canvases you can begin. Tips on how to photograph your paintings and begin selling on line are included as well.  All kinds of professional advice simplified in an easy read. A must!

This one was painted weeks ago before venturing into painting the previously posted floral abstracts.  It went through three distinct stages each one could have been a painting in itself.  Sometimes continuing is a difficult decision to make when a painting is going well, yet you know it just isn't there yet.  It reminds me of a statement I once read from an artist's interview.  The question asked was "when do you know that the painting is complete?" followed by..."and aren't you afraid you might go past that point?" The answer was something like this..."there are endless amounts of time the painting could have been considered completed and it would have been ok. I simply don't worry about it, for you see if I should past that point and continue, another point of completion will occur."

I took this painting past several points where I could have called it done, yet was not ready to call it finished. It was the third take in which I became totally immersed with enjoying the process of painting.  I remember thinking how this must be the way a child paints. Not so much thinking about "the rules" that we have picked up along the way, but more about, "oh, this area is so pretty, I think I'll circle it" or why not put this color over here....living in total freedom!

This one became another floral abstract although that wasn't the intent. It's called going with the flow of the painting. Sometimes it's just better not to fight it....

Another floral abstract. The inspiration for this painting was from a bouquet that my mother-in-law brought to us from the last of her garden flowers.  Enjoy!

Now and then I'll take a notion to paint some florals.  There is something about painting from the real thing that keeps my interest.  This was a bouquet that I bought from our local grocery store and placed in a favorite vase of mine.  I began with a brush, but couldn't help changing over to a palette knife as the paint began to build.  The paint is thick, thick, thick.

I painted this abstract back in the summer just as I had moved back into my downstairs studio.  I posted about struggling with the move back to my downstairs studio, here.  Lol, I'm still adjusting.  My husband has recently built shelves to get all the paint jars off the big table and we're working on better lighting.  I paint on an easel and a table.  I begin on an easel, but as I become more focused on the painting I will place it on a table were I can turn and work on it from all sides easily.  Having all the jars put up where the canvas can't bump into them and my not having to be moving them as I paint, will help immensely with the large canvases.

Lighting has been an other problem as this is a basement room with one small window.  The room was painted white to help brighten it and we replaced the fan/light fixture with my track light fixture from  the upstairs studio.  I love being able to spotlight paintings with these.  Still it's not enough.  I had grown accustomed to working in a well lit natural light room for almost four years supplemented with overhead fluorescent lighting.  I purchased some spotlights on adjustable stands, but still not enough.  My biggest problem has been in dealing with my own shadows.  I have one spot on the table, where if I'm turned just right and don't move....well, that's not going to work. Have you seen all the movement in my abstracts?  It's been very frustrating working with shadows on the canvas and of course, the more I think about it...the more frustrated I become.  We are going to put the overhead fluorescents back in.  There not so pretty on the ceiling, but I'll take it.  There, just vented my studio frustrations! thanks for reading.  Every one has them...just a matter of working through them. Soon this studio will soon become home!

Through it all...this beautiful painting and many others were created.  On a whim, I entered it recently in an abstract art contest with CFAI for the month of October, and it won.  First Place!!  Two other gorgeous abstracts will also be spotlighted for October...check them out too.  Here is the link: Click Here
