Simplicity... one of my simpler designs with what I call a Japanese style.  Now and then I enjoy creating a painting that speaks with less.  What is different about this one is that it has usually been with  watercolors when I tend to go to a lighter side, but this was done with water downed acrylics.  I began with the gesturally line drawings in graphite, painted and then pulled the lines back through with black acrylic paint and added the jewels. It is done on a heavy watercolor paper and would need to be framed. Enjoy!

Sunshine.... We managed to get out this morning and photograph my most recent paintings before the clouds and rain roll in.  The forecast has us with mostly cloudy/rain until next Tuesday.  I photograph my paintings outside using natural light mostly because I just don't have all the fancy equipment to do it indoors.  It was only 29 degrees outside!  Just wanted to bring a little sunshine and spring weather into your neck of the woods.  Can you feel it?!

$400.00

Brightly colored.... with lots of surface texture!  What more could you ask for on this first day of spring than... color!  Here in the Ozarks they are telling us that there is a possible winter storm coming in tomorrow.  That is the white that you see in the painting... Just kidding and no, I don't really think it's going to happen.  Remember, I'm from the "Show Me" state.  Color is in, I hear.  This would add the perfect balance to a living space with a lot of neutral colors, translate that as a bold statement.  Need something to brighten your day?  Here it is!

"I can do that"... I love the playfulness and pure creativity that can be seen in children's artwork.  This week I had a small painting "Tsuli" featured on a site under the subtitle of "I can do that".  Now I am going to be honest here, at first I felt offended that my art would be considered "childlike"....I mean really, anyone can do that?  But then, I do truly love that look and it is much harder than it appears in getting to the point of letting go, to be totally uninhibited and believing like a child.  As we grow into adulthood we are conditioned with "the rules" of what looks good and is acceptable.  Creativeness requires that we think outside that box!  For an artist to get there we must fight the critical voice within.  You know the one that says "no you can"t do it that way"..."those colors look awful together"...."what are you thinking"...etc.

HOW TO GET THERE... Mindlessness. I have never been a chess player, but I have observed others enough to know that it takes a great deal of thought, planning, strategizing and thinking ahead to beat your opponent.  This painting was begun with a composition and a plan, but as time passed it went through many changes.  Throughout the changes there were frustration stages to deal with because it wasn't working as planned.  In working through those stages there arrives the... oh well, I don't care, whatever, it doesn't matter thoughts.  This is where there is no longer a struggle going on and comes a willingness to go beyond, to try new combinations and creativity kicks in, spilling over.  Other times it might be boredom, not being in the mood to paint, something else on my mind or listening to the music ...to list just a few.  But all in all, anything that takes us away from our adult minds helps!

ORIGINAL Abstract Painting "Afterglow" by Contemporary Artist Elizabeth Chapman

'Afterglow'
Acrylic on 36" x 36" x 1.5" wrap canvas
$1200.00

To purchase contact me: elizabethchapman@artlover.com

Afterglow.....is now finished and ready to be hung on your wall.  Just an email away!  Currently we have it on the wall in our home that we call the revolving wall, as we know it will soon be moved.  It has a very nice fixture of overhead lights to view a painting, just like it was in a gallery.  This morning as I walked through to grab my morning coffee, it caught my eye with how well it enhanced the mahogany wood trim in our home.  The work is not done once a painting is completed.  There is the time spent  photographing a picture that will represent that painting well, listing it on various sites, posting, social media, hanging in public places, ordering and replenishing supplies, inquiries to answer, studio cleaning, etc. and for this time of year taxes.  There is always the hope that the painting will sell fresh off the easel! Since that is not most usually the case, at least not for me, there is time in waiting for that perfect customer to contact me.  In the meantime...another painting is begun in faith.  Enjoy the flash of colors!
