Ensconce, ORIGINAL Contemporary Abstract Painting by Elizabeth Chapman

'Ensconce'
Acrylic on 24" x 30" x 1.5" canvas

Available

An interview done by Dynasty Brush about my work can be read here on their blog.  Thanks so much to Karyn Meyer-Berthel, who did such a fantastic job in writing the article.  I paint with all kinds of tools. Mostly older brushes and rollers, rags, cardboard & etc. So when I was contacted about doing this post for a brush company....well, I laughed.  We proceeded with the interview and I later received some complimentary brushes from Dynasty.  I pulled the brushes out of their package with the intention of using them, but found that I quickly reverted to my usual tools. They were just in to good of shape to use!  I am happy to report that I have now used them in my last two paintings that I have posted. My favorite is the rounded Palmer brush, which is a short handled brush that fits in the palm of your hand.  I love the comfort, feel and the mobility that it gives me with the process of blending.

I will continue to experiment and post the results for you.....

Thanks for reading!!

Rococo,Contemporary Abstract ORIGINAL Painting by Elizabeth Chapman

'Rococo'
Acrylic on 36" x 24" x 1.5" canvas

SOLD

So, where did the title for this painting come from?.....  Well, glad you asked!  I pulled out a book that I've been reading lately, 'Finding Divine Inspiration' by J. Scott McElroy and flipped through some pages until my eyes fell on this paragraph.  'Schaeffer points out that God reaffirmed His interest in artistic beauty later when He gave David the plans for the temple, which Solomon built.  Second Chronicles 3:6 says: "And he (Solomon) garnished the house with precious stones for beauty" (KJV).  Shaeffer writes,"Notice this carefully: The temple was covered with precious stones for beauty.  There was no pragmatic reason for the precious stones. They had no utilitarian purpose.  God simply wanted beauty in the temple.  God is interested in beauty.'  ......there you have it garnished.  I then took this word into thesaurus and found rococo which has a similar meaning, and it just seems to fit this painting so well!

Effusion, Contemporary Abstract ORIGINAL Painting by Elizabeth Chapman

'Effusion'
Acrylic on 36" x 36" x 1.5" canvas

SOLD

Excited about the completion of this large abstract!  It is very similar to a smaller abstract that recently sold, 'Visceral' and there is another smaller one in the works as a commission based on these two.  This one has lots of surface texture as I worked with building the layers up.  Available!

"Deep"
Acrylic on 24" x 36" x 1.5" canvas

SOLD

This painting came to mind this morning as I was thinking about the emotions I was having at the time that it was painted.  It was basically about a situation that seemed so hopeless that I knew the only hope there was, was in God. And so, this painting was a prayer a calling out to God, in which He answered by bringing goodness forth. The title came from Psalm 42:7, "I hear the tumult of the raging seas as your waves and tides sweep over me."  God is love and He is good.

Sometimes the best time to paint will be when we feel least like it. This cannot only be therapeutic, but there is a sincerity and authenticity to it.  It is interesting to me that without knowing the outcome of this work, I had chosen blue to work with.  Acquiring and refining technique is most definitely an important part of creating, but without the driving force of emotions our artwork just will not speak.

Panache, ORIGINAL 'mini' Contemporary Abstract Painting by Elizabeth Chapman

'Panache'
Acrylic on 8" x 8" x 3/4" canvas

SOLD

Complementary colors create a dramatic and strong composition in this 'mini' abstract.  Lots of surface texture on this painting as I am working with one of my favorite brushes, an old stiff brush that has definitely seen it's better days. But, works for me!

Mestizo, ORIGINAL Contemporary Abstract Painting by Elizabeth Chapman

'Mestizo'
Acrylic on 36" x 36" x 1.5" canvas

SOLD

Enjoying these last few weeks of summer as the signs of the approaching season are in the air.  The bright cool colors of summer are in the beginning stages of making that transition to what will become the beautiful deep and warm  colors of fall.  I actually enjoy this shift as it brings with it new ideas and a change in color palette.   Before long, it will be time to say good-bye to summer....so enjoy!!

Juxtapoz, Contemporary Abstract ORIGINAL Painting by Elizabeth Chapman

'Juxtapoz'
Acrylic on 30" x 40" x 1.5"

SOLD

Razzled Dazzled! .....is how I would describe what I feel when I view this painting!  Just completed this large abstract and had a difficult time with pulling it together.  It went through many stages!  In the end I began playing (yes, playing!) with the bright reds, whites, lines and shapes.  It is so inspirational and exciting to discover new techniques in painting and to know that there will always be more to learn.  Just wish there weren't those stages of frustration that you got to go through!

Fornent, ORIGINAL "mini" Contemporary Abstract Painting by Elizabeth Chapman

'Fornent'
Acrylic on 8" x 8" x 3/4" canvas

SOLD

What does this remind you of? .....as I am so often asked by my wonderful hubbie. As I stated in an earlier post, most of the time I'm focused on the relationships between colors, shapes, values, lines and texture while painting.  So, I'm really not thinking about what it looks like.  But, when I saw this one as an image it reminded me of a tree.   Can you see it now?

Acrylic on 8" x 8" x 3/4" canvas

Another MINI COLORFUL abstract ......to brighten up any small space or collected for a grouping displayed on a wall.  I am signing these on the side, giving more of an option as to how they how displayed.  I choose what I feel is the strongest view for presentation, but often times these abstracts will have more than one view that works well.   So, if you get tired of your display, they can be re-arranged!

Summer time blues....Always so much more beautiful to view in real as the image does not always capture all the subtle  variations  and surface textures.  A dip in the blues is  refreshing and a way to cool off those hot summer days.  You will be sure to be captivated and mesmerized by color with this painting.  Perhaps hanging in your home?!!

"o.k., so what does this remind you of?"... I can paint, but then when it comes to titles it can take me forever.  I am often asked how I come up with my wonderful titles.  Well, I don't mind confessing at all that it is my wordy husband and he can pretty much do it instantly.  Now and then he will grow impatient with me and will say, "o.k. what does it remind you of?"  and I will usually respond with "I don't know, I'm paying attention to colors, shapes, etc"  But, this one reminded me of my dad who was an avid golf player, thus the title "Match Play"!

By the way if your interested, I've been posting these on a site called Daily Paintworks with a beginning auction price of $50....sold "Fractal" yesterday. thank you!!  I'm calling these my "mini" series and I think they could be collected making a wonderful wall display.
